I found this up for pre-order up on hkflix. The R1 release of Sympathy for Mr Vengeance by Tartan USA.

Specs:-

Hopefully this is a film>NTSC transfer, but knowing Tartan it could possibly be a film>NTSC>PAL>NTSC transfer.

The new Tartan R1 has gotten a solid review - DVD specs wise on dvdtalk.

Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35.1 widescreen and this transfer is enhanced for anamorphic playback. Black levels look nice and deep and don't break up at all save for one or two instances of really mild mpeg compression showing up once or twice. Edge enhancement is kept to a minimum, and there isn't any heavy line shimmering present to complain about, only some typically mild instances. The color scheme comes through very nicely on this transfer, the reds and greens looking especially bold without bleeding into the surrounding colors on the screen. There's a pretty decent level of both foreground and background detail and aside from a few instances where you'll pick up on some natural looking film grain there isn't any serious print damage to note either.

The guys at DVD Talk now what they're talking about. As it won't suffer from NTSC to PAL conversion it should be sweet.

It's a pity the Making Of. seems to be missing but -

A: Big deal
B: I suspect he's using a review disc!

The R1 cover art is lovely too.

Well, just thought i'd input that there is nothing wrong with the Korean R3.

No English subs on the extras though. Enough said for me!

Sure you're going to say but the film is more important. Of course it is but if I can have everything subbed with decent quality then I'll get that version.

I'd buy the R1 now.

But the R1 (and the R2 CE) has a subbed commentary. As far as I know the R3K SE has no English subs on extras.

I have never got thru a subbed commentary, all I have trioed were awful to get the hang of and they all meld into baddness, no matter who is speaking

still the films well worth getting and there is a new Korean dvd out maybe thats even better ? no subs on extras I am sure,.

If there's no English subs on the extras disc then it's nothing but an expensive coaster IMO.

I've never bothered trying to "read" a subbed commentary, but they're still nice to have.

Yup I never watch extras in another language now if no subs, some may be amazing and well worth seeing, but with no subs no way

Sometimes getting the films early is a bad thing as wait a long time and a better version may pop up

but waiting is a killer sometimes.

More importantly do the "signs" have English subs? I'm meaning the three letters that appear in the film and are not subbed on the Korean disc.

No idea as they were not subbed on my copy

they seemed to be a fairly big part of the plot mind you as they were dwelled on if I remember correctly. I could be wrong and they may be shopping lists.

I remember three important letters. In all three letters you can guess what they are for but it'd be nice to know what they actually say.

The first letter I think was him being fired from his job. I don't recall an actual scene where it covers this (except in past-tense) and I'm guessing that's what the letter was saying.

The second letter, his sister's suicide note. Love to know what it said.

The last letter, which is stabbed into Song Kang-ho's chest at the end of the film, was presumably just some announcement from the terrorists but it'd be nice to know what it said.

If you're able to find a translation Tom that'd be great. Otherwise does anyone know if these are translated on the Tartan discs?

Translation below:

The "You're Fired" letter isn't translated when it first appears (because there's no shot showing the words).

It's only translated when his sister finds it in his jacket.
It reads:
"Indemnités de licenciement" (in french).
I'm not sure of the exact translation in english but it's the money they give you when they fire you.

The suicide note says:
"Kidnapping is a horrible thing"
"If you did it for me..."
"Whatever happens, return her to her family".
"I love you. Goodbye."

The last letter is titled "Sentence". (which is the same kind of letter that Bae Doo-Na was writing on her computer when we first saw her).
