Eh ?

I'm thinking the exact opposite.
Or did you mean "appealing" ?

Aside from a bit of contrast boosting, I much prefer the DD to the dark, edge-enhanced mess that is the Momentum.

@Sam:
I won't make it mandatory, but can you please use higher resolutions next time ? :)

No, I didn't. DD hurts my eye. Wouldn't touch it with a stick...

'a bit' is quite an understatement for that digital vomit that is DD :D

I saw the first DD caps yesterday and my reaction was the same. Good to see at least the UK disc looks watchable.

@Hung:
I said "a bit" and I mean "a bit". :D

Look at the second-to-last screencap:
The clouds are still clearly defined on the DD. Heavy contrast boosting would have instantly made the whole sky white.

Gamma levels have been increased a lot, but contrast boosting is minimal IMO.

You're right actually. I should look more carefully. I hated the transfer partly for wrong reasons. Now I hate it fully for the right reasons :lol:

I prefer the R2. DD's suffers from the same problems as their Police Story transfer

The second screen looks a bit bright but other than that, DD's looks good. I'm just glad that theres finally a ligitimate NTSC version and I can throw away my crappy flea market PAL-NTSC copy.

Apart from the second of the main captures where the DD looks awful (what happened to his face? He's got major acne on the DD :D) I'd say the DD pips it but tbh neither look all that good.

Based on these screen captures (real world comparison mean much more): Get the DD now for the extras or if you have the UK DVD don't bother upgrading.

It would be interesting to add the Madman R4 but I doubt anyone has that.

The R1 is much better than the R2.

Not sure what Hung Fist is looking at?

What's with the animated sun?

I have the the J-bics R3 and it's a tad too dark. It also had no title card. Maybe DD spliced in their own?

note: the first two movie caps are not exact same frames. The last two are (EDIT: I mean they match with one of Sam's caps :wink: ). I don't know what's up with the second last cap, the black boarder appears out of nowhere and disappers a few second later when a cut comes.

+ a few extra caps

Compression/encoding problems

I don't know Eastern Eye too well but these problems seem commong on their dvds. Their Ong Bak also has compression problems, the dvdtimes Cutie Honey reviews caps show far more severe pixelization than my custom subbed dvd-5 (compressed of the R2J) and I recall reading their Death Trance was another victim...

That last screen looks like shit. Hopefully all Madman DVDs aren't like this.
