Avalon - R1 vs R3K vs R4

Avalon - R1 Miramax vs R3K C2 Communications vs R4 Madman

R3K is most likely an R2J port and has proper subtitles.

The R4 is taken from the Studio Canal master, is progressive PAL and also has proper subtitles.

The R1 is a major dubtitled travesty. Miramax added needless expository narration, thus we have subs where there is silence on the original Polish audio.

Thanks to Lourdes for the R3K caps.

Top = R1 Middle = R3K Bottom = R4

Nice comparison, thanks.

Although I'd appreciate it if you could post your future comparisons in higher resolution in order to avoid any loss of detail on PAL discs. :)

I would if I knew how. File>Save Image in MPC seems to default to 720*576.

EDIT: D'oh! I forgot that 576 is the native resolution of PAL. Caps have been redone.

I presume it's supposed to be green not orange?

When were new resolutions agreed? I still think it's best to leave resolutions (except for adjusting for the stretched image) as they are instead of artificially inflating them but I guess it's easier to tell at larger resolutions.

Not that I'm bothered unlike some I only ever use them as an indicator. It's not crucial they're perfect to me.

Mine too. That's the resolution of the SD DVD.

Avalon will be the last of BVJ's first BD batch. I keep meaning to see some of Oshii's live-action stuff, closest I came was flicking through the disc of Fast Food Grifters and deciding it was not for me.

Wow !
Thanks Eva. I wasn't expecting you to redo the current comparison. :)
The R4 looks a hell of a lot sharper now.

Shame them yellow subs are on the dvds :(

I have the Korean version and from what I remember the transfer on thats quite nice :)

Love the film myself, a true stunner to sit back and relax to. I will be buying the HD dvd of it thats for sure when it comes.

Neither I'd suspect, considering that Jap/Korean releases are yet a different tint IIRC from the Beaver comparison.

R3K (R2J port) caps: https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/dvd/avalon
I'll add R2UK ones as well next weeksih.

Cap 3 (the bloke on the screen) may be wrong because it's midshot and an awkward one at that but it looks correct.

hmm... interesting. R3K looks very soft, but considering the dream like nature of the film it might not be quite that bad. Madman is sharp but also displays much more ee. The colours looks great in the final scenes, but the R3K would seem to be more in line with the film's atmosphere.

The R3K will be re-issued once again soon. I saw it on dvdfromkorea's pre-order list. Maybe I should finally get it. Unless the UK caps manage to surprise me.

Quite coincidentally the BD was shared on Japanese P2P just a couple of hours ago; so I'll have caps from that next week too. Doubt I'll be able to get the DVD it comes with however.
With the BD available there's little point in fussing too much about the DVD's.

Is that de-interlacing artefacts on the pistol in the first shot (those little white dots)? Or is it some side-effect of the heavy post-processing?

I can't see the white dots you're referring to.

Rest of the BD caps are up - https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/dvd/avalon/hd .

I got the R2UK today, the disc is fucked so I couldn't get all the caps - https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/dvd/avalon .
Wouldn't bother adding it to the comparison as it's effectively the R4 with burnt in white subs and less bitrate.
