Wong Kar-Wai boxset comparisons (TF1 vs Others)

A BnB member has asked me to re-post the comparisons I had done on my french thread, so here goes:
As Tears Go By
Region 1:
TF1:
Region 1:
TF1:
Region 1:
TF1:
Hard to find a winner.
Both DVDs are equally sharp and bright, but they have different colors.
R1 DVD has a blueish tint, TF1 has a greenish tint.
I think skin tones are a bit pinkish on the R1.
But knowing Wong Kar-Wai, it's hard to guess how he wanted this movie to look.
Days of Being Wild:
Different framing. TF1 DVD is window-boxed 1:66. Tartan DVD is 1:778.
Tartan DVD has a greenish tint. TF1 DVD has a blueish tint.
I think the Tartan DVD is slightly better, but I'm happy with my TF1.
ChungKing Express:
I'm not comfortable posting these pics here, since it has been proven that the DVD-Beaver caps I've used are inaccurate.
So, here are the links:
http://img218.echo.cx/img218/4597/ckexp17za.jpg
http://img180.echo.cx/img180/4528/ckexp20ol.jpg
Here's one that includes the new R2UK DVD:
TF1 picture is darker but colours are more vivid and sharpness is excellent.
Fallen Angels:

Kino vs TF1. TF1 is window-boxed and looks better.

Accent R4 vs TF1. TF1 looks good, but Accent looks awesome.

Accent R4 vs TF1. Same conclusion.

Ditto.

Ditto.
Happy Together:
This is a mini-comparison (done with the help of Running Man from the ADVDG forum).
Kino vs TF1:
TF1 looks way better.
Conclusion:
As always with TF1 discs, quality is not perfect but it's very good.
Days of Being Wild = Tartan has the edge because of the green filter.
ChungKing Express = I think that TF1 and R2UK are great.
Fallen Angels = Nothing can beat the R4.
Happy Together = French DVD looks great.

Why is the Kino shot of Tony in black & white, while the TF1 is coloured?

by tom2681
The entire first scene of Happy Together is in black and white.
For some reason the first few shots are in colour on the french DVD (then it turns to black and white).

Agree with most of your summations, but would say that the R2UK cap for Chungking looks the best.

Does anybody have the Artificial Eye R2UK of ChungKing Express ?
I'd love to make a better comparison.

I do

Well, if you could post a few pics from the beginning and the end, I could match them with my TF1.
*Don't forget to deactivate deinterlacing and put all your picture enhancement settings to 0 (to make sure the caps are close to the original DVD).*
But I'm sure you know that already.

Where did does that R2 UK cap come from.
DVDBeaver. Proves that those idiots don't know what they're doing.
ChungKing Express:
R2UK:
TF1:
R2UK:
TF1:
R2UK:
TF1:
R2UK:
TF1:
TF1 is cropped and has different colours.
It's slightly more detailed in some shots (look at the fan on the last shot).
Even if TF1 beats the R2UK in some shots, the AE is probably better overall.

Maybe we should make a dvdbeaver warning thread... I've personally lost money twice because of their manipulated screencaps.

Good idea but only when we're sure the captures are wrong.
Any chance of adding some R1 caps? The R1's should beat the Tartan's.

Which films?

In every cap the UK is better than the French image.

Love Letter (Iwai)

Look at the caps. The R2J caps by Jeroen are correct. My R3KR caps are identical to his R2J caps. Somehow beaver's R3 KR caps look very different.
Kids Return:
" The Chinese bootleg is once again, as the other bootlegs, a copy from the Bandai DVD. It just looks great. If actually looks better than the Korean DVD. Look at the back of the boxer and the spots on the floor in image number five: The Korean DVD has a higher contrast level, which takes away detail."

The funny thing is, Bandai and the Korean dvd are identical (used to own them both, thanks to dvdbeaver)
+ Same with A Scene at the Sea. Beaver's R3KR caps are manipulated. I don't own the Korean dvd, but I've seen screencaps from it.

The UK R2 for CKE looks very good and much better than what I have. But for what I paid the R1 will do.

Interestingly, on the R1 the line about "May likes the place because the manager says she looks like Demi Moore" is replaced with "May says I look like a Japanese star" (something like that).. not sure why.

I'm just pleased Tom has fixed the capture size

Cheers Tom and Hungfist. If I hadn't loaned my ITMFL: Criterion to my brother, I could've posted some screenshots. I can provide captures of the R4 2046 though.

Go ahead. I'll match'em with some TF1 caps.

Is anyone going to answer my question?

Posted: 10 May 2006, 19:48
by bradavon
You need to ask one first
Oh that above, that looks more like a point then question. Sorry I don't know.

I was just wondering why, thats right Brad.

As Tears Go By Region 1 added. Over to you Tom.
Another point to prove the DVD Beaver guys don't know shit. Contrary to what they say the R1 like the Tartan is single layer.
It is a decent anamorphic, Cantonese stereo and remastered English subtitled DVD though. It's much better than the awful HK DVD (same goes for DOBW).
Captures are 720x408 from 720x480 as they look vertically stretched.
Posted: 24 May 2006, 22:21
by tom2681
Thanks Brad.
Caps have been added.
BTW: Don't forget to resize them to 720x404 next time. 720x408 produces vertical stretching.

No worries. All the bitching was doing my head in

, don't expect it to be a common thing it takes to long to create them but I will do that Musa R4 one.
The TF1 wins but there isn't much in it IMO. Wouldn't it have been better if you'd used 408 as I did?
I did ask what I should use and your answer was 720x that doesn't mean shit to me

. Blame Bisc. or whoever created the Res. Dogs "R2 UK Single Disc" captures I used those as a basis what to resize them to
