Most Korean titles that Tartan have messed up have had progressive transfers in Korea. And that is of course only thinking about Korean films. Very few Japanese DVD's are interlaced.
And to be honest even if you have an interlaced NTSC master to deal with you can still do a decent job without any ghosting. I could manage this myself if I read up a little bit first so why aren't Tartan able to achieve this?

This is nothing to do with being purists, if you have a decent and/or large display you can't fail to notice this. It's horrendous and it's why I don't own a single DVD like it. Just wait until your next display upgrade.

You do get PAL>NTSC transfers sometimes. Thai films releases in HK, some TV series etc. Oh and not to mention Tartans genius Film>PAL>NTSC AToTS R1 DVD, that one was a stunner.
But as has been said before, we rarely have to put up with NTSC>PAL transfers here. Few other companies do this.

Of course. I doubt it will be under a tenner though, only old Tartan DVDs are that. The chances are it will be either £14.99 or £13.99 before vouchers.

For me it all depends what extras it gets if I'll get the Tartan or HK DVD. I ended up getting IA2 HK DVD as the Tartan has pants extras.

The Tartan R1 of Oldboy is currently listed by some webstores..
Amazon lists the release date as 23/8.

HKFlix lists the same release date and the following extras:-
Anamorphic Widescreen
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Director & Cinematographer's Audio Commentary
Director's Interview
5 Deleted Scenes

I wouldn't take that list with a grain of salt. Surely this will be identical to the excellent UK release?

In other news the US remake has been put on-hold because attached director Justin Lin is now working on The Fast and the Furious 3 (fucking awful franchise).

Nope but they're not lengthy so I wouldn't be to annoyed if I had to miss out on them.

The commentary is the only real extra and that wasn't on IA2 Tartan but was IA Tartan. Besides the HK DVD is over half the price cheaper which means I'm not paying Tartan's prices for a few flimsy extras.

The Making of. on IA2 HK DVD has English subs but nothing else. I reckon it just happened to have them (they're burnt in).

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't. The other Tartan R1 releases have been copies (bar NTSC to PAL of course).

The first was a decent watch once affair, the second was rubbish.

However, non-progressive NTSC looks better than a screwed-up PAL conversion.

Sounds like you have an impressive system. I guess it would come down to how your projector de-interlaces the video signal. Probably it won't do field interpolation cos then you would lose resolution, so probably a "frame averaging" which would create a "ghosted" frame. Then if you played a non-progressive NTSC>PAL-converted DVD you would be creating ghosted frames that were averaged from fields that already had ghosted images in them. Guess that might look bad.

Can you even begin to imagine how awful ghosting can look on that movie-screen ?
That's why I'm so mad at Tartan.

I'm with you Brad, if its' delayed any more I'll get the HK DVD, the audio thing must be fixed on all DVDs now.

The thing is "Infernal Affairs" is undoubtedly best from Tartan but "Infernal Affairs 2" only really has the deleted scenes over the HK DVD (the commentary wasn't imported and the Making Of. has English subs on the HK DVD anyway).

So unless Tartan give us the commentary for "Infernal Affairs 3" then I won't be bothering (which I doubt they will).

I seriously considered getting the uber nice HK or Korean 6 or 8 disc box set but couldn't justify the cost compared with the £5-6 HK DVDs.

It's great to see Tartan listened when we moaned about the IA2 cover. It's a vast improvement.

It's a pity the commentary hasn't been imported again but overall it's looking good, better than I was expecting. I hope the "mini" documentary isn't really short.

I'm not sure if I should trade/sell my IA2 HK DVD now and get the Tartan DVD for completeness sake??? The cover art is awful though.

EDIT: I've just looked up what's on IA3 HK DVD and it doesn't have a commentary so forget that one. It only has the Making Of. from above (+ a silly music video).

Meaning this Tartan DVD has more extras BUT wait which cut are we getting?

I hope the deleted scenes (which aren't on the HK DVD) doesn't mean we're getting the theatrical cut with the extra scenes sectioned off. The HK DVD has both cuts and just the DC on the LE Trilogy box set.

Maybe I should just ask cd-wow if they have the fixed audio version of the HK DVD and get that

You could but we've waited this long we may as well wait for R2 reviews. I'm sure CD WOW will still have the HK DVD at that point.

If it turns out to be the TC with the DC scenes separated off I'll get the HK DVD.

It's an ending that was shot for the Chinese and Singapour market, I think.
In those markets, the bad guy always has to lose at the end.

Yep it was. Well I knew it was for the Chinese market. I can see this rule having a very bad effect on HK cinema come 2046 (maybe sooner) .

It's nice to have as an alternative but is ultimately very weak and would've killed IA2 and IA3's story arc.
