Does anyone want me to do a Patlabor 2 comparison?

I'd like to see a comparison of the new Joy Sales Heart of Dragon with the HKL, and also the new Joy Sales Dragons Forever with the HKL if anyone has them. Thanks.

I noticed there's no comparisons for Dr No or From Russia With Love... any takers? Please?

The R1 UEs aren't out yet but I'm sure Captain Joe is planning to do a R1 SE vs R1 UE of them.

An R1 SE vs UK R2 SE vs UK R2 UE or some such combination is possible though. I have the UK R2 UE for FRWL on order so can add that if anyone else can match it.

In the beginning I was only going to do 3 or 4 but once I saw people wanted more I decided to just do all the R1 UEs. But once December 12th comes around I will have Dr. No, FRWL and Goldeneye up.

Like most I'm interested to see the GE one, as they messed up the UK UE with the cropping.

Keep up the good work. I'm also interested in seeing FRWL too. I don't rate Dr. No much.

Yeah, Goldeneye is gonna be the real tester, as the R2 is crap.

It annoys me my Brosnan SE's now stand out like a sore thumb. Of the first 3 only TWINE is worth getting and I'm sure as hell not getting only some of the Brosnan's.

They'd stand out even more then  . Why add a stupid red tinge to TND, it makes no sense. I'd actually like DTS on those, it's bound to add something.

I've noticed before that computer caps really bring out the darkness, colour problems etc. more then when I watch them on my Toshiba HD-TV. My question is, when watching TND and Goldeneye, do they appear excessively pink/red and dark?

For MPC which should I use to turn off Deinterlacing:

Auto
Weave
Blend
Bob
Field Shift

And should I tick? - "Set interlaced flag in output media type".

I've just realised I had it set to Auto which turns Deinterlacing ON meaning any captures I've ever done based on an Interlaced transfer will be inaccurate :( , thankfully I don't "think" I've done any.

Tom: Why didn't you say I should change this? Thanks for your guide it helped tremendously.

I was about to say on WOTD: Zoke Culture I couldn't spot the interlacing but I thought it must be interlaced so I Googled how to turn it off. I've set it to Weave as that definitely turns OFF interlacing.

Huh ?
Because I didn't realize you were using MPC.

MPC can use different filters for DVD decoding.
Does yours use PowerDVD's filter ? (Cyberlink ?)

Anyway, Lourdes is right.
"Weave" means that the fields will be left alone (no deinterlacing).

I don't even remember adding this info to the first post, though:

Brad, did you do it ?

Nope as I've not got PowerDVD installed. I don't watch DVDs on my PC so have no need for it. It says MPEG-2 Video (my MPEG-2 Decoder comes from K-Lite Codec Pack I forget which one it uses).

Oh and you knew a few of us were if not me or rather it was popular ;). No harm done I just hope I've not made interlaced caps look progressive.

What about Blend, Bob and Field Shift? Cheers

I should post a new method for taking caps sometime. Much easier and more equal one. VDubMod + php uploader to resize caps.

@Brad:

Blend: Evil.
The first half-frame (or field) is blended with the second field.
It will look good as long as there's no movement.
Any movement will create ghosting.

Bob: Good.
Every field is displayed separately, one after the other.
But you'll lose half the vertical resolution.

Field Shift: I don't really know.
Top fields become Bottom fields.
Bottom fields become Top fields.
I don't know what good it can do. :D

What we really need is a smart deinterlacer:
One that can analyze the picture, recognize combing and remove it when necessary.

I use FFDShow's 5-tap lowpass deinterlacer myself.
-Doesn't disturb non-interlaced videos.
-Automatically recognizes and removes many forms of combing.

@Lourdes:
I thought about VirtualDub.
Might be a good alternative. :)

I suspect Auto uses Bob to Deinterlace most of the time, thanks. I've left it set to Weave as the whole point I use MPC for DVDs is captures.

Any chance of a Project A and/or Project A 2 comparison? I'm curious to see how the IVL compares against the HKLs?

The HKLs are cropped and horizontally stretched (as usual).

Thanks Hung. I have Project A and would keep it for the extras but it's otherwise a no brainer to get the box set.

The IVLs definitely look better.

Agreed. But naturally IVL looses overall due to the audio issue.

But hey, you don't care about such thinks so get the IVL. You're lucky.

What's wrong with the audio? It's got Cantonese DD2.0?

The problem I do find with FS Audio tracks is the 5.1 tracks are cleaned up but then they go and fuck it up by being really over the top, the DD2.0/1.0 sounds fine but isn't cleaned up. But overall as the DD2.0 is acceptable no I don't care.

I do prefer HKL in this respect as their DD5.1 tracks are restrained (although for films like The Killers they're too restrained) but also cleaned up. They're basically Dolby Surround but that's fine, the little extra oomph brings them to life.

only some of them sound ok. Try Police Story 2 mono and you'll know what I mean. And of course most of their mono's are out of sync.

Jeez, HKL's Part 2 is badly squeezed.
