I thought the original language was Cantonese.

I think I'll get some of those cheap HKL's, is Magnificent Bodyguards any good? Thats only £3. I thought I'd get that with Dragon Fist/Shaolin Wooden Men and Last Hurrah for Chivalry,

Magnificent = Downmix, wrong language and an enjoyable film personally .

Shaolin Wooden Men = Wrong Language.

Last Hurrah For Chivalry = Might be the best subtitles around, although it does have some competitors like Megastar which are also said to be good (a possible port of Tai Seng's?). However, Dragon Dynasty has a few extras.

£379? That was the film's budget!!

Shot in Korea with the Chinese actors speaking Mandarin. Although it was released in HK after a delay with a Cantonese dub.

I disagree about determining the language based on lip-sync only (although if the language was intended to be Mandarin, then fair enough). It's the studio's decision IMO. Include both if you want to satisfy both arguments.

Theres also a "Spiritual Kung Fu" DVD, 2.35/1, Cantonese etc, release year is given as 1978. I thought it was released in 1980?
I'll buy a few movies and see if I like them, Fearless Hyena was quite good.

Spiritual Kung Fu is also a Mandarin film - HKL's DVD doesn't include mono at all.

Dragon Fist was produced by Lo Wei and all of his films with Jackie Chan were Mandarin with the sole exception of The Fearless Hyena.

The reason Dragon Fist was released in HK with a Cantonese dub is because it came out about a year after Drunken Master even though it was filmed many months before that film.

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow was Jackie's first Cantonese film.

Dragon Fist his last Mandarin one.

Actually the DVd is Mandarin but again a dowmix

The Columbia was 2.35:1 and proper Mandarin but cut by 5min - not censored, just missing random bits of footage

Fearless Hyena was the only HKL Jackie Chan/Lo Wei DVD to have genuine mono. I reccomend renting the others first to judge whether you can cope with the remixes - I know I can't!

Are the AUS releases exactly the same as the UK DVDs?

ONE exception I know of. Dragon Inn Australia has an optional English dub, HKL just has Mandarin audio.

Same as HKLs so depends entirely on what the UK disc has.

Those goddawful layer changes are in the same places too, according to one Aussie sight, with the exception of Dragon Inn, which from reviews seems to have a better layer change than HKL's UK disc, which was slap bang in the middle of a shot of people charging towards the camera

Anyway coincidently I received Dragon Inn today through the post (R3 version). Nice picture, but don't remember the tint being that extreme. Well Canto track at least, 5.1 + Original!

The HKL trailer for it is still one of my favs though.

Yeah I love that trailer too! HKL made some really impressive ones back in the day - heck, they made Black Sheep Affair look like the best film EVER!

I loved the haunting music they used on the Fist of Fury CE trailer, and the Story of Ricky one that made it look like a serious prison drama (!)

Seems more and more HKLs are now out of print. Just a few still avaliable cheap - notably the Bruce Lee films.

Back to shite HK DVDs then .

This year is HKL's 10th anniversary and I kinda miss them.
