You do love cult films comparatively more so than mainstream films do you not?
basically you could say that, but it has nothing to do with cult status. It's not my fault modern mainstream cinema sucks mostly.
bradavon wrote: your bizarre comment that Death Proof is best American film since 2004.
You saying it isn't?

Nah, FDTD isn't all that, and Desperado needs a script.

If you mean English language when you mean mainstream I wouldn't go that far. Most Hollywood blockbuster films suck though.
HungFist wrote:but it has nothing to do with cult status.
I think it does, your taste from what I can see is very much into very obscure cult films. Some of the cult films you like look absolutely awful too.
HungFist wrote:You saying it isn't?
Are you being serious? I thought Death Proof was great but the best American film released since 2004? Are you kidding?

Off the top of my head "A Mighty Heart" is considerably better than Death Proof, that's without thinking. Actually I'm not sure if that's really an American film but you get the idea.

KBV2 was awful.

Rome - Episodes 4 & 5 - 4.25/5

Like some of the humour in the programme.

Heroes - Episodes 6 & 7 - 4.5/5

There's something fishy about Mr. Bennet. And Hiro is great :D

No, I don't mean english language only. Japan is producing overscripted doramas all the time. Whenever they're not producing dull j-horror... Korea doesn't seem to have much else to offer than over-acted gangster films, or alternatively gangster films with classical music. And melodramas. HK's been decent recently, though.

How do you define obscure cult film?

Could you give me examles?

Well, I admit I'm not the best person say that. What US is producing nowadays looks generally so bad that I rarely bother to watch anything.

The Bourne Identity – 3,5/5
Could do without the lightning editing and that unneeded flashback at the end, but the rest is good. The scenery is very nice, with much less plastic visuals than in action movies like this usual, and I even like Franka Potente. Better than any Bond movie from the last two decades (although some come close).

Best US film since Kill Bill Vol.2? Sideways, walks all over KBV2 and Death Proof. Heck even Spiderman 2 came out after KBV2 and that's a better action film than anything Tarantino's ever shot!

Surprise surprise, I haven't seen either of them. I did try to watch the first Spiderman movie but it looked so terrible I gave up after the first 15 minutes or so.

EDIT: ah, I'm gonna go to video rental store and rent some crap and see what I think

The Dr.Octopus - Spiderman train fight in Spiderman 2 is the greatest action set piece of this decade imo. Raimi at his most brilliantly visual.

I wish they'd stop with the same horror films. They're all identical except with different actors, from what I can see anyway. I wouldn't say Japanese or Korean cinema is mainstream though.
HungFist wrote:How do you define obscure cult film?
Stuff virtually no one has heard of. Even less popular than most foreign language films. Exploitation for instance.
Could you give me examles?
Not easily as I try to avoid it :D . The sort of stuff in your exploitation threads and cult cinema thread. They look awful, mostly IMO.
Well, I admit I'm not the best person say that. What US is producing nowadays looks generally so bad that I rarely bother to watch anything.
Fair enough then. I know what you mean if a film or selection of films look awful I don't tend to bother either.
The Bourne Identity – 3,5/5

Have you seen Casino Royale or License to Kill? Both are far superior to Bourne Identity. I'd also say Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies are too but the first two are stronger contenders for grit and realism.

What flashback btw? I don't remember one.

Have you seen Supremacy yet? It's even better. I didn't like it at first due to the shakey-cam but now I appreciate it. It does move at a much faster pace to Identity.

I agree Franka was great (she's a decent actress who rarely seems to be able to pick decent parts) but I don't like what they did to her character in Supremacy. I best not mention what it is.

Our tastes differ wildly but what the hell :D -

* Spider-Man - Okay but way to glossy and as you say it looks terrible, far too clean and nice. The look doesn't work for me at all. The action isn't especially exciting either.
* Spider-Man 2 - More of the same, meh. The two most overrated comic book films ever. The only good film Raimi has made is Darkman.
* Dreamers - It had very mixed reviews. I have the DVD haven't seen it yet. It looks interesting and Eva Green nakedness is always good ;)
* Layer Cake / Sideways - I've not seen them.
* Million Dollar Baby - Outstanding. Hilary Swank is one of the best actors working in Hollywood today. It's much better than Mystic River IMO.
* Brokeback Mountain - Also outstanding. I'd watch this one first.

Bourne remembers the events of his last assassination assignment. He sees the target (African guy) together with his children and hesitates. Then Mumbasa's bodyguard shoots him a few times and finally he stumbles off of the side of the boat.

Oh that flashback thanks. That's crucial to the whole point of the Bourne films. Bourne remembering bit by bit.

Of course IMO Salty.

Well, that's your problem.

Casino Roayle is okay, but features too many awful scenes to be a real good movie. Also, Franka Potente vs Eva Green, no fucking competition.

Goldeneye is a bit better, and the one that comes close to Bourne. The rest of the Brosnan Bonds don't.

License to Kill to kill is 80's. And yeah, I've seen it. More than once.

Yes, I saw it back when it was in cinema. I was the only person there, lol.

I suggest you add spoiler tags to your post.

Yeah but the audience knew about it long before Bourne did. No need to show something we know already (well, maybe a two second shot of the kids, but without Bourne being visible in the image, that would've been a satisfying way to show it without underestimating the audiences capability to use their own brains).

ok, back to see Spidey 2.

I'm guessing Franka.

You said "from the last two decades" ;). I'm pretty sure License to kill just fits in.

Nah there is no spoilers. Nothing more than any review or back of the cover may mention.

Who the fuck told you that! :D
I'm one of the biggest Sam Raimi fans out there, and even I think it's a pile of bollocks! Seriously it's watchable enough and funny in places, but wildly uneven, even Raimi himself thinks it's not a good film.

That's the reason why I haven't read a single back cover in 8 years. I also skip the second and third paragraph from reviews because those are the ones where the reviewer spoils the movie. Although I don't read much reviews at all because I believe I know these things better than they do.

I saw her in an awful British horror film last week called CREEP.

Started out reasonably suspensful but became ludicrous and laugh out loud naff in the second half.

You'd think after BOURNE she'd have had her pick of good Hollywood scripts.

She's attractive enough... but I'd pick EVA anyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

all this made me want to see Lola Rennt again (saw it like 8 years ago or so and can't remember much anything of it). But I'm afraid it might suck.

Oh boy that film definitely doesn't suck. It's fantastic. It's just the perfect length, a nippy 80 odd minutes.

I heard Creep was awful. I thought so too but I guess not. She's a decent actress and as you say good looking enough.

I love 'Sideways'. I saw 'Creep' on TV fairly recently, and it wasn't too bad actually.
