On a TV screen, the darker shots aren't intrusive, it must be your monitor settings. I'm glad I still own the old laserdisc, but the new version kicks ass, can't wait for the HD DVD... both cuts are remixed in 5.1, foleys are redone, but the remix is very faithful, nothing like the Terminator remix at all, which was a travesty.

If the foley effects are redone, thats enough to make it unwatchable for me! How is the remix very faithful if the foley effects have been changed?

The first shot is definitely framed differently. There's more image to the right but less to the left of the frame. To be honest, I think the original version looks better, even if it is letterbox.
Look at Matrix's shirt in the first image - so much sharper & more detailed on the letterbox version. The colours seem to look more accurate too, to my eye anyway...

The original dolby surround track is included. The new foleys (or are they the old ones re EQed ?) just sounds bigger and better and totally faithful, the remix is more clear, but totally akin to the original version (which is included anyway).
The only bit not in the "uncut uncut" print is where after Matrix throws the blade, the same take shows it in the guys throat for half a second (excusable seeing it's an 'alternative take' on what happened) where as the "uncut uncut" print takes out that half-second but replaces it with a different close-up.
