I hope HKV have spent a lot of time working on the subs.
Chow's puns are extremely difficult to translate.
I would be surprised if they would.

I think this release have been delayed for a long time for that prime reason. They wanted the subs and dub to be really well done.

That's what I was hoping for. :D
They did a good job with Chow's Chinese Odyssey and Shaolin Soccer, so I'm optimistic.

Just got a review copy of From Beijing with love, it's an incredible package (as usual with HK), the subtitles appears to be OK, I didn't see any evident pun, but then again, the booklet goes about how difficult, or impossible, is it to translate Chow's pun in french. The level of care that went into the release seems to be as high as their Shaolin Soccer double DVD with the two versions.

The print is immaculate, never have seen the movie looking so good.

Good to know. :)
I've just ordered my copy.

Will do a Universe vs HK Vidéo comparison when I receive it.

hey,

any of you guys read the booklet included in THE LONGEST NITE package? If so, does it go over the actual work (minimal if rumours are correct) Patrick Yau did on the film and Johnnie To's ghost-directing work?

I miss this one in my collection (actually, I miss 18 HK DVDs, I need to catch back on my buying, but they have tons of recent issues, all great + a new collection of Cat III and Jackie Chan movies which is made by them, but not HK labeled, still they look HK in everything but name). So sorry, cannot tell !

The french audio is the original dub, which is cut

You cannot watch the movie uncut in the original language, it's the same copy.

The reviewer wished they included at least some of the cut scenes as they are all action / musical ie not dubbing necessary.

stereo mix sounds like the original mono, but not as close as the HK DVD.

The Syndicate of Crime??? What a dumb title. That cover art sucks too.

Fair enough for you though.

Early cover art.
Will probably change.

HK's final covers always look great IMO.

I tend not to pay any attention. No English subs = No Sale. Adding your own subs is fine for some but not me.

It's a hassle and even if it wasn't my PC cannot cope in comparison to my DVD Player, not at all. A computer is no replacement for a proper dedicated DVD Player, IMO.

Why would someone watch movies with computer?

You can get upscalers that shit all over the ones in most dedicated DVD players for one. Who says you have to sit upright at desk and look at monitor? HTPC + output to a telly.

I don't believe that would equal a top of the range DVD Player, which I use or at least it was Pioneer's top of the range about 18 months ago. The replacement added little.

Besides I don't have a HTPC :D . Even if it does to me I want to put a disc in and press play on a proper remote control not faf around with a computer. Slightly off topci: As good as Windows Media Center is is doesn't come close to a HD+DVD Recorder Combo Unit.

It helps I'm not as fussy as some about picture quality. To me most "Remastered" DVDs will do just fine. There are exceptions such as Fist of Legend and Tai Chi Master where I created my own DVD, but those are rare exceptions.

The last time I checked DVD Players were unable to add custom subtitles. That would be a clever feature.

Actually this "early cover art" looks like fan made for internet cover art. I mean, the HK logo covers parts of the credits, it's absolutely not official.

Great news! I have read about it on various websites too.
I second dvdvision's comment on the cover, it's quite obvious, and it looks very much like the VHS cover that my video store owned in the old days ;)

There has also been some talking about the releases of a Ringo Lam's "On Fire" trilogy boxset 'soon' and a limited "A Chinese Ghost Story" 4 DVD boxset (1 DVD for the extras) in January 2008...

Do French studios use Fortune Star transfers?
HungFist wrote:That's why custom subbed dvd was invented
That takes to much time for me. My DVD Recorder plays DivX though which is nice and quick. I presume it can read sub files. I've never tried.
