Face/Off - 2 Disc SE - DVD/HD-DVD/BD

Post by bradavon »

About bloody time, this is excellent news IMO:

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/faceoff.html

I'm definitely picking up one of the HD versions. I can wait for HD on this one.

Pass on the SD SE, I already have the R1 barebones. HD will be a must buy, eventually.

This was announced a while back, still seriously dont expect a good set of extras from them muppets, but we can hope.

The films great, but it still got some of the worst stunt double work in film history  then go into slow motion and it gets even worse! Hope they CGI all the stuntmens faces off! as it would be less distracing than people who look nothing like the actors at all! every second shots a bloody stuntman!

Bugger.

Well it has a commentary and is a 2 disc release so will be good enough for me. Extras are a bonus now a days for me, yes I get annoyed when none are included though.

Face/Off is great, one of the best Hollywood action films ever made. Stunt men obvious? Pah I never noticed and even if I did I wouldn't give a shit.

LOL, romero, you are so right. The damn boat chase has stuntmen all over the place. So does the shoot out on the rooftop of the prison and in the airport shootout in the beginning.

In the hangar near the beginning, you clearly see a guy get pulled back on a wire when he gets shot, it's ridiculously obvious.

At least Paramount aren't neglecting DVD unlike some other companies (Warners I'm looking at you!!)

Face/Off is undemanding fun, but hardly a great movie. Die-Hard or Lethal Weapon it ain't. For one the acting is ridiculously hammy - if they can't take it seriously how am I supposed to? And the plot has more holes than Swiss cheese. I thought the speedboat chase was the best directed sequence, very exciting, but yeah, lots of obvious stunt-doubling.

Do you mean neglecting DVD in favour of the HD optical formats? Then yeah, eg The Road Warrior.

Where you can not only see the double hanging onto the boat, but also the skis under his foot. Even Jackie Chan hid them better in "Rumble in the Bronx". :D

I still own the cut region 2 and the DTS region 3. Even though the picture's not very good with the region 3, the DTS soundtrack is cracking so I doubt I will upgrade.

Your eye sight must be so bad its amazing you can even see a film at all. It RUINS the action in the film seeing someone who looks nothing like the stars doing all the action, its a joke they let any of them get on the screen, its so bad it guts the film. Great film, far from anything like a best action film, not even close.

I prefer most other Woo films like Broken Arrow or Hard Target, both dont use Stunt Doubles that you notice in every action scene! and work far better. The best action film of the 90's was probibly The Rock, now thats damn superb! but Connery had a few double shots in that which stood out, but not even 1% as bad as Face Off :D

I want Face Off on HD, but we will see them faces more :D in the cinema It really stood out badly. I havent even got round to watching the DVd yet :(

Hard Target is a classic and blows Fuck/Off and Broken Ankle out of the water.
but Connery had a few double shots in that which stood out, but not even 1% as bad as Face Off
Connery was 66 when The Rock came out. 8)

An old guy who could still leave you to bleed to death in a gutter with all your teeth missing.

Nope nothing to do with my eyes I was too busy enjoying the film to give a shit and like I said if I could see them I'd chuckle and move on. I've got better things to care about.

But yes Eva is right, I have perspex lenses since 2005 (no seriously).

You condemning Warner for one release? I see no other evidence Warner are neglecting DVD.
Markgway wrote:Face/Off is undemanding fun, but hardly a great movie. Die-Hard or Lethal Weapon it ain't.
Face/Off is way better than Leathal Weapon, agreed on Die Hard though. As for being hammy that's part of it's charm. Plot holes? They're talking about swapping faces who gives a shit!

I wonder if there is any AV difference???

I was thinking the same. Are HD-DVDs or BD generally cheaper than the other? HD-DVD will be region free for sure, one could be cheaper than the other?

I'd probably decide on price but if all is equal would probably go BD as that's still looking more likely to win in the end.
saltysam wrote:there is no way average actioner Broken Arrow is better than Face/Off
Agreed, it's no way better.

RRPs for new releases in North America are the same, unless you're dealing with DVD/HD combos.

Went for hd-dvd of Road Warrior ahead of the blu-ray yet for Payback i went for the blu-ray over the hd-dvd :? at the moment there is no rhyme or reason to my choice.to be honest i can see both formats existing happily for ages to come.Best bet for anyone is to wait for a decent combo player that is also multiregion for SD dvds.A lot of blu-rays appear to be region-free as well,Apocalypto usa being a recent one.

Thanks Salty/Eva. Agreed about both formats co-existing. I doubt that will change until both/one becomes so cheap the masses want it.

That's exactly what I'm waiting for, although SD-DVD MR is a bonus nothing more. One of my DVD Players is a Hard disk/DVD Recorder so that's not going and the other plays SACD and DVD-A so that's not going either.

It will probably be the Samsung except if they mark it at a stupidly expensive price. I really hope they're wait to add full support for BD-J which is due out finally in September/October.

p.s - How are you finding out a BD is R0? That BD site doesn't cover all releases.
