Sony BMG Music Entertainment has announced the release of the Transformers: The Movie – 20th Anniversary Special Edition for the 7th of November. The two-disc release is set to be the ultimate Transformers DVD, featuring three versions of the feature film, commentary tracks and interviews, a sneak peak at the live-action movie and more. Further details can be found below, along with an early look at the artwork. You can read more over at Transformersthemoviedvd.com

* Brilliantly remastered and color-corrected
* 16x9 widescreen presentation, which has not been seen anywhere since the movie was in theatres twenty years ago
* Full screen edition
* Commentary tracks
* Interviews with director Nelson Shin, story consultant Flint Dille and voice actress Susan Blu
* Autobot Matrix of Knowledge Presentation: Truly showcasing the pop culture phenomenon that is The Transformers, Sony BMG has created a special version of the film for the DVD release. The ‘Autobot Matrix of Knowledge’ will feature trivia and fun facts about the movie itself, the Transformers brand, and the pop culture references in which Transformers has been spoofed/tributed. Approximately one hundred fun facts will show up on screen throughout the movie. Many of the factoids were provided by fans through a special DVD site created by Sony BMG to solicit input—marking the first time that the huge Transformers fan base has ever been asked to participate in the creation of a Transformers home entertainment release.
* Original commercials for the toy line and movie
* Behind-the-scenes sneak peak at next summer's highly anticipated Transformers live action movie event. The special feature segment on the DVD will include comments from Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg who share their vision and passion for Transformers
* Collectible ‘transforming’ cover

First review. Unfortunately it doesn't go into much detail about the picture and audio. In their gallery they've got captures of the remastered widescreen matted transfer.

The full frame version on the new disc is a pan and scan version of the widescreen, not open matte like the old discs

Mmm interesting, I have the old Rhino version as well as the 13 disk set from China which includes this movie (Yes it an official boxset ;) ), but may want to get this release for the extras, but in 2 minds now, especially from what you have written Ivan, have they cocked this up?

Well the widescreen version seems fine from all accounts. It's meant to be matted and remember how bad the Metrodome release was. What I want to know is the sound and whether it's the genuine original

Update: The comparison on the review posted above zooms in for some reason on the Sony release. This review - http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/showthread.php?p=879217 - initially said the image on the fullscreen was cropped but has rectified the review since. Weird.

Here is a better review on DVD Talk
It includes comparison pics between Rhino, Metrodrome and Sony, yes Sony easily looks the best, and even has a comparison with the Full screen and widescreen version. It is open matte like the old disk, so def going to get this release :)

Time to resurrect this old thread :D - DVDActive have got a comparision with the UK special edition and the Sony Special Edition, it looks like UK is the way to go, looking at the comparision, although it is interlaced :(

See the review

I will def get this

Thanks Slasher.

Given the unique extras on both discs, I'd say that a double dip would be in order.

Working my way through it tonight and I have to say I'm a bit baffled by DVDActive's comments that the Metrodome transfer is Interlaced Film-PAL. For a start the film rubs 81m 21s long which is 4% faster than the Sony and Film runtime of approximately 84m 43s. Also, I can't find any interlaced fields in any of the scenes i've gone through frame-by-frame.

What I think might have confused them is that there seems to be some sort of motion-blur/frame overlay glitch going on in some scenes where the foreground animation runs independatly to the background. It's not something you'd ever pick up on in normal playback though (well, not quite).

It's all a bit confusing at the moment! :?

They probably only watched in a standalone DVD player and not a PC.

Interesting, cheers Shingster

Also worth nothing

Mmm Chris Gould said in DVDActive the following
As an aside, the 4:3 transfer in this set is shocking. Really, really bad. I can only guess that it's the old Metrodome transfer, which looks like VHS. Still, I guess most people will buy it for the widescreen version.
I believe the Sony 4:3 is remastered, so it may be the Sony version is the winner for that.

Yeah they've really only included the open-matte version as an "extra" really, it's not been remastered and even if it were it still wouldn't be the definitive version fans are after, because it's the UK home video edit.

My review will be comparing the widescreen versions of the UE and Sony, then the open matte versions of the UE, Sony, and the old Transformers: Reconstructed release.
