Pap is harsh. Dragon Fist is pretty good but most are mediocre I grant you. HKL are just shoving out what's left of their Jackie back catalogue in one big push. No frills. By the end of the summer I think all of them will have been done and dusted. There's still a number of films they've yet to release dating back to the Media Asia deal (ie. City War, The Big Heat).

There's a really great, epic martial arts story just crying to be let out from Shaolin Wooden Men, but its smothered by the usual limitations in scripwriting, directing, and acting that plagued independant Kung Fu films in HK at the time. Nevertheless the idea of having an apprentice slaving away in a Shaolin Temple and secretely learning Kung Fu from various different masters who are all oblivious to each other, with the added twist that one of them is destined to become the main villain was a really great one.

Lau Kar leung in particular could've done something truly special with it, - particularly the clash between the vicious fighting style the evil sifu teaches him with the more noble teachings of Shaolin. Not to mention the moral dilemma that faces the protagonist later on in the film when he's torn between his duty to the evil sifu and upholding the justice preached by the rest of Shaolin.

Are you sure? That used to be a big no no.
Of course I'm sure. I wouldn't have said it otherwise.

And "old school pap?" I take exception to that!

There's no need to, we all have our own opinion. I'm sure you've said a film is pap before others have loved.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Brad is biased.
Probably. I'm just giving my opinion that they're overrated tosh (except for Bruce Lee stuff).

I don't think anyone minds you thinking a particular film is pap, but you've just dissed an entire genre. That's like me saying all Spaghetti Westerns are shit (having seen only a few). You need to check out the best examples before condemning all.

In fairness to Brad though, he's not the only one on these boards who dismisses entire genres as shite and they rarely get their opinions challenged when they do, so I dunno why Brad should. :P

Ask our resident PC Kiwi EvaUnit for some Anime romantic comedy recommendations and be grateful you're not within spitting distance of him. :D

I sorta like CLAMP and Takahashi stuff is quite bearable. I do admit that Onegai Teacher/Twins are pretty bad, just not on the same level as Akamatsu's explosive vomit inducing adaptations, so they're worth mentioning.

I thought I had. I need to check out some Shaw Brothers stuff but otherwise I know it's not for me.

Thanks and exactly.

It's a thing to do on these boards it seems, diss Brad :D. I guess I'm an easy target.

Check out The Five Venoms, Heroes of the East and Eight-Diagram Pole Fighter. If you don't like any of those you'll NEVER like traditional Kung Fu. Don't judge everything based on Drunken Master, which, despite the hype, isn't the best the genre has to offer.

LOL No :D

It was better than Drunken Master granted but still so painfully boring. It's really the best word to describe it, the fights were dull, the acting mediocre (admittedly not an important one per say), the comedy rubbish. Just so dull. I did last to the end (unlike Drunken Master) which must say something at least.

Boring, boring, boring.

Could use those words to describe Ashes of Time as wel Ken. 8)

Describing the fight in Prodigal Son as "dull" is like saying John Woo never made an inventive action scene in his life you cheeky philestine Brad! :D

HKL have submitted TWO versions of New Fist Of Fury to the BBFC in the past few days. One is 79min, one is 105min

So it appears that HKL, in their infinte wisdom, still don't have the uncut version, appear to be using a version missing 40min of footage and have wasted money submitting a version to the BBFC (the 105min version) that they submitted 5 years ago. The mind boggles!

Yeah, and since this now one comes from FS it's likely to be a downmix while they probably would have had a decent 5.1 track for the longer version which I would've bought.

Oh well, I guess I'd buy any version as long as there's no FS crap coming from the speakers.

Uhm... why bother? NFOF is one of Jackie's worst films ever. It had only one interesting scene, which was the metaphor of one chopstick getting easily broken, but together they can't be broken. :D
