Well, at least it looks like we got two movies out of one now
Never thought of it like that :D

It seems Gibson just hated the idea of a film so violent
Is this the same Mel "I love extra ketchup" Gibson we're talking about?

Braveheart, Passion and Apocolypto are all violent-as-fuck. I doubt Gibson had a problem with the violence or darkness. The studio more likely.

He doesnt mind violence obviously, its the nature of the violence he didnt like, or so it was made out to be this way back then. Sadistic, torture with no reason for it and just out of the blue killings and pain, thats what Gibo never seemed to get his head round it semed.

Braveheart at least has a reason for killing them English scumbags :D cannot comment on Passion and Apocolypto still as hell I have yet to see them still, but from what I have seen of Passin he thinks theres some religious message at least to the insane torture.

You know it ;)

Ron Burgundy: Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast.
Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch.
Ron Burgundy: It did, didn't it?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart.
Ron Burgundy: I saw that! Brick killed a guy. Did you throw a trident?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.
Ron Burgundy: Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.

"Yeah were'd you get your clothes, the toilet store."

But seriously back to Payback.

I think it would be interesting for someone to compare the image of identical scenes in both cuts to check for just how drastically different the colors are, and possibly framing as well. From what I've read, the Director's Cut as more standard colors, but done in a more "old school" fashion to mirror crime films of the 60s and 70s... at least that's what I read. Anyway, I'll be buying the director's cut for sure, but don't have the original cut yet... sure I could find it in a bargain bin somewhere :P

VERY different! It does indeed have kinda a 60s look to it now as opposed to the "neo noir" look of the theatrical cut.

Judging by the screencaps on the DVDtalk.com review, she seems to be. I think the only "big name casualty" is Kris Kristofferson. I think, if anything, some of the other big names may just have less screentime, such as James Coburn (whose role is supposedly reduced to, as one review put it, "a glorified cameo"), and I guess the shootout between Gibson and Liu may be different because the scene ends with Kristofferson's men knocking him out. I do remember an alternate shootout in the old trailers for the film, so it may be from this cut. All I know is that I'm picking up my copy next week!
