Well, I finally received and watched my DVD this week. I'd agree that the film was hugely entertaining, with a very impressive-looking monster. My gripe is that I do wish that such an incredibly-rendered 3-dimensional monster wouldn't have had such a 1-dimensional character. Still, for the type of film it tries to be, it certainly delivers.
But one more thing . . .
What was with that Hisaishi-wannabe score that really didn't fit the mood of the film?

It made a Hisaishi impression on you?the68monkey wrote:What was with that Hisaishi-wannabe score that really didn't fit the mood of the film?

I think it fitted very well, especially the comedic music, as it kinda helps us to distinguish whether the scene is supposed to be funny or not.
On a related note, I like Bong Joon-ho plays with the emotions of his audience. There are so many scenes during which I had to think for a second about how to react.
SPOILER
The dude just lost his daughter and yet it is extremely funny to see the family mourning. Perverted? Maybe, but still funny.

I'm still not sure what to think of the film, as I keep mulling over parts of it in my mind. In my mind, links to Miyazaki's Spirited Away keep cropping up, with reference to a dragon being the spirit of a river, and in the case of The Host, the river spirit mutating into some hideous, life-killing form. Also, I'm still not sure what to make of the title of the film. I'd go into more discussion here, but with the spoiler tags still not working, I wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone. Very blatant anti-American sentiments in this film, though.
At a guess, I'd say that the title could be in reference to Korea being the host to virulent American carelessness.
Oh, well. Not going to try to think about this one tonight. I'll mull it over some other time.

Finally saw the film and well another one in the BIG DISAPOIMTMENT category it’s a stupid film with an ignorant tone of unfunny comedy, pretty gutted really. Hell even the effects were not exactly great at times. I liked the film and its fine to watch, but as far as the biggest Korean film of all time goes it doesn’t deserve any of that success at all. The Relic was 10 times the film this is and that was 10 year ago.
Such a waste of talent, and hell the music was truly appalling with the single worst overall tone in a films history, the scene suposed to be dramatic, so they pick a comedy tune from a British slapstick film, from the 70's, idiots.
