Have you never watched an American film where the lead isn't a native America speaker and it not bothered you or you even noticed it?
Errr... yes, I have. But it is something completely different if say Al Pacino plays the Tony Montana character. I wouldn't cast him to play Jack Bauer for instance. Clearly, Kiefer Sutherland is the better option. Why? Because he looks and sounds like your uncle Tom American.

Man, how hard is this? Not every American film's lead character is a native American. If the character is supposed to be a native American you almost always have an actor for him who either is a native or who can speak the language without accent. It pisses me off when in American that are supposed to take place in another part of the world, the characters speak English (Memoirs of a Geisha for example). That's why I like Mel Gibson's way of making his films. "Apocalypto", like "Passion of the Christ" make sure to be played in the setting's original language.

Wouldn't you be pissed if the Indians in "Dances with Wolves" were speaking English all of a sudden?

Uncle Tom? :?
"Native American" would be an American Indian (ie the original inhabitants of America).

Kiefer Sutherland doesn't look like Uncle Tom, LD. :D
Uncle Tom is a black man (and a cartoon character).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

I know, that's why I said:

"the idea of Bond being an American makes my blood boil, even though oddly Lazenby pulled it off fine, but then there is a big difference between an American and Australian in this sense".

See?

Fair enough though reading it again I didn't put it very well.

What? How is it remotely different?

I bet to Cubans Al Pacino doesn't sound remotely Cuban but you don't care.

Firstly Native American means Sioux or the like, secondly lets get the right terminology. Accent is how your voice sounds not how you pronounce a language.

My point there are no doubt lots of accents in Mainland China all speaking Mandarin.

You're completley contradicting yourself now. You only just said you'd prefer a German dub (so not the original language) to broken Mandarin.

Personally while I'd have preferred to see Memoirs of a Geisha in Japanese. I don't give a hoot the leads were Chinese, they're all great actresses and that's what matters. Vivien Leigh was in English but played an American in GWTW.

You're changing your argument know. I thought we were talking about broken language vs. dubbing.
thelostdragon wrote:Wouldn't you be pissed if the Indians in "Dances with Wolves" were speaking English all of a sudden?
Of course but what on earth does that have to do with your original point?

Brad, I can't see why you seem to have a personal problem with the fact that I notice Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh speaking Mandarin with an accent in CTHD and with the fact that it bugs me.

It just seems to me that you are arguing around, just for the sake of arguing. I tried to explain why, you don't accept it, fine. LOL, why would I lie about something as trivial as that?

I don't :)

I just disagree with you that's all.

Nope, or not anymore than you

Sounded a bit more than that, though when you called my personal opinion "rubbsih", but hey, back on topic I guess.

Sorry if you took it stronger than I meant it. I just meant IMO they were perfect for the roles.

Your main purpose for thinking they were the wrong people for the roles was because their Mandarin wasn't perfect, whereas to me that's only one aspect of taking on such a role. Yes you did say they also acted and performed the martial arts well but that seemed secondary to your main point.

Rubbish isn't a very strong word. If I meant it to be stronger but still fairly polite I'd have used idiot for example.

Bey is back! I hope these improve on the existing transfers from Fortune Star, both of which have problems

I love "Hand of Death". Jackie has an extended side role in the film, but more importantly, he did choreograph the action scenes for the film.

As for "Fearless Hyena", it is his very first directing job and I think it is a really great film. Decent revenge storyline and really great fights scenes. Emotional kung fu.

I don't know if Bey is back at HKL though. That's probably one he recorded before he left HKL.

Hand Of Death is a personal fave of mine, with a good cast and kick ass theme music. The fight choreography is a bit slow and stylized compared to Sammo's usual work at the time

Fearless Hyena has some good moments but suffers from unfunny comedy and a dull first half. The English dubbing for it was bloody awful too!

Fearless Hyena is my least favourite Jackie film apart from Fantasy Mission Force.

Jackie Chan is overrated.

Sammo and Yuen Biao are underrated.

Simple :)

I quite enjoyed Half A Loaf. It's loses its way towards the end but can be funny

Jackie, Sammo and Yuen Biao are all great. Though their current output doesn't seem very good
