There were still some very funny scenes, even though Bond is really humorless and doesn't crack jokes, like the part when he drives in a complete circle to take the woman back to "his place", or when Bond growls "Does it look like I give a damn!" when asked if he took his drink shaken or stirred. :D And unexpectedly I was laughing my head off at the part of the torture scene when Bond says to Le Chiffre "Er, I've got an itch here, a little to the right... oh yes!"
:D

And we musn't forget (during the poker game after Le Chiffre almost succeeds in killing Bond:

"That last hand almost killed me."

And the psycho-analysis/banter/foreplay scene between 007 and Vesper on the train is also top class. :)

So there is a bit of humour, and one liners, but not as overtly as in previous films. It reminded me of Dr. No a bit, before Bond started to become more of a parody, and go OTT.

First the bad: The last 25 minutes doesn’t work, despite the idea being good. Something is just missing.
I think I know what you mean, perhaps? the scenes where Vesper double-crosses Bond are a little ham-fisted and her subsequent suicide doesn't quite come off.
The worst part in the film is by far the airport episode, which I don’t think has a single original idea.
Exciting though...
And finally, that shower scene, it only looks good in stills, in the film it looks just corny.
Not as affecting as I hoped it might be... but corny? Nah. I think Dalton would've made this scene work. But that's just my opinion.
I thought she looked mostly ugly.

Dr. No was the first???

And not half as good as I remember it. The villain is really weak and is only on screen for a few minutes. Of course Connery saves it but in places it's worse than OHMSS (the ending of OHMSS is great).

It's already been proven you've no taste when it comes to women ;) . To glamorous for you? Not Asian enough? Not stick thin enough? :D

That said I didn't think she was drop dead gorgeous but definitely attractive and because she wasn't drop dead gorgeous it fitted better, more believable.
The construction site action scene, while being the best action piece in the film, has a slight problem with being too asia esque.
Huh? It didn't look remotely like anywhere in Asia.
probably the best of all Bond films.
Yet you only give it 3.5 out of 5?

Personally I thought this was on of the best scenes in the film. Corny no way, it showed great acting and depth. The Bond girl has rarely been so believable.

Well I loved it so that's all that matters :D

Funny. I saw it again recently and it was better than I remembered.

OHMSS is generally excellent - save for a few flaws.

I sometimes prefer women who arent' "look at me gorgeous". I'm a sucker for the girl-next-door look. I just wished she fucking lived next door. 8)

Called Lazenby, George Lazenby.

He he me too. She also oddly for a French lady doesn't have a French accent, not as far as I can tell (in real too).

I mean how the action was shot. The villain was jumping around and running on walls as if he had escaped from a Tony Jaa film. It wasn't really that bad but it did bother be a little. The scene was a little too over the top for this film. Still a great scene.

I said the story is probably the best of all Bond films. But there are other things that matter too, don't you agree? Even a great story can be made into a bad movie (which luckily wasn't the case here).

It should be aid that I spent about 10 hours thinking whether I should rate the film 3,5 or 4 out of five. Casino Royale is definitely the best Bond since Goldeneye, and I might be able to enjoy it even more on the second viewing.

Maybe. Those last scenes just didn't catch me in somehow.

I thought it kinda came out of nowhere. I had seen a pic of it before and I thought it was gonna be some very important and dramatic (in a quiet way) scene, but it turned out to be just one scene among the others. The shot itself is great but it's in the wrong place. It needs more "backstory" to make it work.

Oh, I thought you were just asking if Dr. No was the first? IT wasn't a parody. Wasn't until Diamonds Are Forever they began taking the piss.

Ach, he wasn't that bad. He brought his own attributes to the role. Strong physcial presence and the ability to make the final scene work. Deserves more credit than given, just because he isn't Sean.

Really? This is the only time I've ever seen her so I assumed she was putting on that plummy English accent. Since French people can seemingly never do accents I was fairly impressed.

Agreed and it has nothing to do with him not being Connery more so he has virtually no charisma and we're expected to believe women would fall at his feet.

She didn't put on an accent, it's her normal one (well unless she was still acting when in interviews). She is half Swedish which could explain why.
I did say she she looked great in one scene. Just not in the others
Fair enough then.

Poof means gay. Originally it was derogatory term but not really any more (other than obviously some people still take offence to it).

Pouf means "slut" in french.

I've got a friend who's called "Fanny Pouf". :D
It's a good thing she doesn't understand english.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

hey,

Barfly 4/5 (Encore viewing)

Romance and living the Charles Bukowski way. Has the genuine feel of several short stories of his come to life and no wonder, it was reportedly a demand that Bukowski's script (or rather words) would not be changed. All the better for it and casting Mickey Rourke (who was and still is the man) as Henry Chinaski creates the ultimate portrayal of Bukowski's alter ego. Equally good is Faye Dunaway.

Mickey Rourke is indeed the man, shame he doesn't quite look like one anymore! :D Barfly's one of those films I've always intended to buy and watch, but I constantly keep forgetting to.

Then he just HAD to box for a living.

The most coveted dvd, OOP R1 Warner, goes for a lot on ebay nowdays (I paid a lot! :)) and there's also some bootlegs floating around.

I never said that Dr. No was a parody. I said the Bond movies later became more of a parody after the likes of Dr. No and From Russia With Love.

Licence to Kill

A good 7 out of 10

I watched the SE of this last night and it's much better than I remember. Agreed Dalton plays Bond very much straight, which lets face it is the best way to play Bond, that's not taking anything away from Moore's interpretation though.

Craig probably plays Bond just a bit tougher but both work perfectly fine. I don't think Dalton is a better Bond than Brosnan who at the beginning at least played it straight too, just different. Both made perfectly decent Bonds.

I was getting worried it was too American, something Bond should never be. It's very much a British story, but thankfully enough British touches were thrown in to make it okay. All the prerequisite Bond touches were there (I really hope they return in future Bonds). I was pleased to see Q having a larger part than normal.

The action was decent too, you wouldn't mess with Dalton's interpretation.

But no it's not better than Casino Royale (IMO). The villain is a bit too much your typical Hollywood stereotype, right down to being a Latino (something still today Hollywood loves doing).

I can see why it failed though at the box office as after the Humour-fest of Moore and no megalomaniac villains it would come as a shock.

I fail to see why it's 15 rated, especially when Casino Royale which is much more violent is not. Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies are 15 too, why? Sure the central premise of LTK is dark but overall I didn't find it violent enough for a 15. I guess it's because there is no 12A on video, but really 12 on video thinking about it would be fine. Today it would be 12A in the cinema though.

One thing though how on earth did Bond have so much cash? He had millions at his disposal. I was it stolen from Sanchez? If so I missed that.

I've ordered TLD + LTK BOGOF. I hope TLD is also as good, I suspect it will be.
Markgway wrote:LTK is more like a Lethal Weapon-era revenge thriller
Did we see the same film? It's not at all like Lethal Weapon, it's better.
Markgway wrote:Nah. I think Dalton would've made this scene work. But that's just my opinion.
Agreed he would have but so did Craig you Dalton fanboy  . Both are as good as each other acting wise.

A few things that spring to mind:

Being fed to sharks and seeing it in graphic detail (compared to other Bond movies).

The guy exploding inside the pressure chamber

Benicio Del Toro getting carved up in the shredder
