I cannot vote as he is one of the worst directors in the world, he only makes Unwatchable crap to me.

I've not seen any apart from some of Suspiria and I really, really hated the dubbing so turned it over.

Philistines!!!

And for the record Suspiria is supposed to be in English. Every single version is re-looped by voice actors. But you maybe knew that?

Can't believe I'm the only one who's voted. Where the fuck is everybody???

Oh, and why was this moved from Anything Goes? Last time I checked a poll is not a DVD. So put it back please...

I know it's supposed to be in English but that doesn't stop it from sounding god awful.

The forum title is "Non-Asian Film/DVD Discussion" so covers non-asian film and dvd discussion. So is for film or dvd discussion. I've moved it back though as you clearly deliberately put it in anything goes and had a reason to do so. What was it?

Why are members obsessed with posting anything non-asian dvd related in anything goes?

I can't help feeling "anything goes" is really the wrong title. As calling it that makes members want to post everything in it despite the tag line saying "No discussion of articles meant for other forums!". I'm not keen to change the title though as it's been this since I can remember. I suspect everyone else would agree.

I see what you're saying about my polls relating to non-asian films, but I figured that as they weren't about DVDs specifically it might be best to put them in a more general surrounding. Sometimes it's tricky to know where to put what. I think Anything Goes is about right for now, but if others disagree you can switch it. I guess the Schwarzenegger poll should be 'here' too.

Re. Suspiria: Jessica Harper and Joan Bennett dub their own voices if that helps. I think Alida Valli does too. :D

must confess I'm not sure which of these films Ive seen, Sleepless, Trauma, Phantom of the Opera, Tenebrae, Inferno quite probably but I cant really announce a favorite since I clearly can't rememebr much about the films or whether ive actually seen them or just films of the same title... damn my addled mind!! :P

Like I said the asian and non-asian threads are just as much about dvds as films.

Only a little. I take it they were speaking Italian on the day?

Yeah, I understand. As I said sometimes it's tricky to know where to put what threads. I figured polls belong in Anything Goes, but if other posters and Mods feel differently that's OK.

Why would they? All of Argento's movies are shot English language. Two of the actresses mentioned are American. The only reason these films are dubbed is because the films are shot without sound (ala old Hong Kong cinema). The main actors do their own looping in the studio and voice artists are called upon to revoice supporting players (to disguise strong local accents) even though those actors also spoke English on set. Anyone who tells you these films should be watched in Italian is talking bollocks.

My bad I thought they were shot in Italian being from an Italian director in Italy plus being Italian films. So all of his films are shot in English?

That's the thing I hate it when any film isn't shot in sync sound. I'd never work it out with Hong Kong films though so can't really complain about them. When English dubbing occurs 9 times out of 10 it's glaringly obvious and sounds very fake.

It just doesn't look professional to me. For example if Argento had an issue with an actors strong accent he should've employed someone else or someone who was talented enough to mask their accent. The excuse "it doesn't matter" as we'll just dub it over doesn't wash with me.

Yes. Italian productions in English. Not uncommon for the Giallo and Spaghetti Western genres.

Just the way it was done (and still is I think...?)

I thought that 'Opera' was atrocious myself. It's the Argento I saw most recently.

Aside from my fave, Deep Red, the others I liked enough to buy were Suspiria and Tenebrae.

Trauma, Inferno and Phenomena are OK, but not keepers.

Crystal Plumage was boring, though I only saw it dubbed into Italian. I tried to tape Cat O' Nine Tails once, but the tape switched itself off after 10 mins (is it THAT bad??)

Stendhal and Sleepless were utter K-rap!!

Never seen Four Flies or Phantom or Card Player.

stendhal was very poor but i enjoyed sleepless, dunno why as it wasn't well received but i thought it retained some of the atmosphere of his early movies.

I like Max Von Sydow, but the poor bugger looked like he'd forgottten his lines. Even so, his was the only performance that wasn't absolutely crap. Sleepless shared the nihilisim of past glories, but none of the cinematic qualities. I was extrememly disappointed. Argento should've retired after Phenomena.
