I can't pass judgement on him being full of steaming shit but at least he understood the Host, which is more than I can say for the other tosser.

Put that handbag away.
Brad, how did you get the impression that it looks like a Ringu movie?

The Host: 5/5
The Host is without a doubt the best film I've seen this year.
Better than Shadowless Sword, Dog Bite Dog, Fearless and Takeshis' put together (those are the most recent films I've seen).
Bong Joon-Ho is a genius. It's easy to understand why Park Chan-Wook respects him so much.
Synopsis:
Gang-Du (Song Kang-Ho) is a complete loser. He spends most of his time sleeping in his father's snack bar on the banks of the Han river. The daily life of his dysfunctional family changes dramatically when his daughter gets kidnapped by a giant mutated squid. What are they going to do about it ?

Mini-review:
The Host really is a family drama/comedy with a giant squid/lizard in the background.
The actors are amazing, especially Song Kang-Ho with his portrayal of a blonde-haired pathetic loser (quite a departure from his Memories of Murder character).
The special effects are adequate, if not always realistic.
Still, the opening action sequence is impressive.
Just like he did with Memories of Murder, Bong Joon-Ho has injected some humour into The Host. All the main characters are extremely clumsy (if not downright stupid) which makes them very likeable.
Most of the action sequences are reminiscent of Steven Spielberg's films (especially Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds), only much better.
But what's most impressive in this film is how Bong Joon-Ho constantly manipulates the viewer through clever editing (à la Park Chan-Wook).
There are many surprises to be found in this film. Some funny, some scary, some sad (+some that are hilariously funny and tear-jerkingly sad at the same time).
The only thing that I was slightly disappointed with was:
*WARNING ! HUGE SPOILER AHEAD ! REALLY HUGE !*
Why did they have to kill the little girl twice ? That was just mean.
I didn't want a happy ending, but still... They could have let her live.
*END SPOILER*
So:
It's funny, sad, action-packed, scary, beautiful, clever, well put together, typically korean...
It's Bong Joon-Ho style.
Love it or hate it.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Err... I don't know.
I don't have it.
I watched The Host in a movie theater.
Haven't found much info on the upcoming DVD.

Just pre-ordered my L.E. from YesAsia. Looks like it'll ship Dec. 27th. Yay! I went for the Korean 3-discer, the one without the O.S.T. or script book. To be honest, I've lost my craving for fancy boxsets that I used to have. Those extras are pretty, but also pretty meaningless if you don't read Korean.
They have looked nice on the shelves for several years, but that's about it.

Info on the DVD might already be posted in this thread, but I'm afraid to read it.
I don't want to spoil anything, as I've REALLY been looking forward to this for over a year now!
