Alexander Extended Edition

Post by grim_tales »

Does anyone know anything about this? :)
Through a Ceefax Entertainment article, I read Oliver Stone plans to release an EE of Alexander, with a runtime of 3 hours 40 minutes - but this isn't a DC :? His DC was shorter than the Theatrical Cut (I think).

He says the longer version will "allow you to immerse yourself in the classical world"

:D

I'm interested thanks Grim. The Theatrical Cut is decent (yes you're all wrong) but the ever so slightly shorter Director's Cut is yes a mess, it's not the length which is an issue it's the massive re-ordering and reworking of established scenes that doesn't work.

I've always liked the Theatrical Cut (yes I agree it's ropey around the edges but frankly no more so than Gangs of New York) and found it odd I'm the only one who found the battles really well done. They're far better than the Troy battles.

Will I buy this new Cut? It will be the fourth DVD I've bought so hmm... not sure + I've seen the film twice, I'm not interested in seeing it a third time right now (it's long):

1. HK 3 Disc - Theatrical Cut - It has DTS but ropey PQ
2. R1 2 Disc - Director's Cut - Wonderful PQ but ropey cut
3. Korean 2 Disc - Theatrical Cut - Acceptable PQ but not a patch on the WB versions (i.e - R1, UK R2, French R2 (not from WB though) and R4), limited extras.

I'd have bought and kept the WB (R1 or UK R2) Theatrical Cut if for some unknown reason they hadn't split the film across both discs, they didn't for the Director's Cut (which is only 7 minutes shorter).

I now just own the Korean DVD.

None, its rumor still. Taken from an interview in Empire magazine, I read it all and its nothing to get excited about thats for sure.

If it comes, it comes. Its just sad he is bothering ripping people off again! 3 different versions, what an idiot.

Ah thanks. It's only a rip off if you're stupid enough to buy all 3 versions. Both previous are still easily available.

It's Stone's Star Wars :D . He'll keeping editing it regardless if people want it.

And who said either of those two movies were any good?

Alexander was a mess with mostly bad acting/miscasting.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

If the rumours are true, I don't see how making Alexander even longer will make it suck even less. It's not like say Kingdom of Heaven, where we knew there was an excellent film trying to break-out.

But there wasnt an excellent film trying to break out of Kingdom of Heaven! the longer cut is still as badly flawed and the extra footage doesnt change the film at all, just makes it longer and doesnt make the flaws any better at all.

The best bit about Alexander was the cry of "Back, and to the left!" by Alexander... Stone just can't let it lie, can he? :D

LOL, time for Brad to triple-dip.
thedvdf wrote:Director OliverStone will release a third version of his Alexander epic in a bid to win over critics who originally mauled the movie. The Platoon filmmaker insists the cinematic version of Alexander was hampered by time constraints after being slashed to 168 minutes in length. Stone originally wanted to release the movie in its original three-hour form but concerned studio bosses forced him to axe scenes containing homosexual content. The new DVD-only release will be a staggering three hours and 40 minutes in length, and will feature footage edited out of the original cut. Stone says, "This thing has haunted me. By truncating it into three hours, we lost things that were important. This version allows you to immerse yourself in the classical world."

My, aren't you a lucky little boy then. I saw Stone AND Nicolas Cage on TV talking about "World Trade Center".

You seriously reckon it's still "as badly flawed"? Sure you still don't like it but you reckon it's no better?

Dude you hard to please. It's massively better, a completely different film. The TC frankly should never have existed.

Me when I said:

When the EC (Extended Cut) is a reasonable price I'll probably pick it up. It will have been ages by then that I've not seen the film.

What Stone says is Bollocks though, he said something similar about the DC (which does feature new scenes too). If the film was actually cut against his will why release a Director's Cut without such footage???
EvaUnit02 wrote:LOL, time for Brad to triple-dip.
Probably but technically it will be a quad-dip or is it a double dip as I only own one version now :D

Bring on all that new homosexual loving

Firstly, thanks for bringing that typo to my attention :D
Secondly, in a scene when the troops are being marshalled to prepare for battle (I can't remember the battle, except it was one of the early ones; lots of golden vistas is all I remember now), someone (nor can I remember whether or not it was Alexander or someone else doing the shouting) shouts "Back, and to the left!". That's a reference to his JFK and the ol' Magic Bullet theory.

It is "Better" but it didnt fill in a single flaw I had with the film and I was gutted at the pacing, battle flaws, timeline etc.. still not working for me. It just felt like massive chunks were still missing and whole sections just felt lost. It was suposed to take place over 3 years! it felt like 3 weeks to me :(

I like it, but the longer cut just seemed to add footage I didnt care that much about, because I expected the new fotage to fill in the gaps I felt were lacking.

For Brad:-

Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut

Warner Home Video will release Alexander Revisited: The Unrated Final Cut on February 27th, 2007. Director Oliver Stone's epic arrives in its third incarnation featuring more than forty-five minutes of never-before-seen footage restored into the tale of the Macedonian conqueror. The film, now clocking in at nearly four hours, will arrive with a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. Aside from a free movie ticket to "300," no extras seem to be included in this edition. Retail is $24.98.

Thanks Eva for me indeed :D

It looks intriguing but I'm wondering if this is based on the TC or DC cut? If it's the DC I'm no longer interested, as he messed it right up in that cut.

I'm not sure it needs to be any longer. Sure I'd love to see the extra footage but it's already bloody long as it is. Still no doubt I'll pick it up when it's cheap.
