That's only the 1 disc version.

Speaking of HD versions there looks to already be a Blu-ray version:

http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=721797

It would be interesting to see a comparison between this and the WMV HD version. It looks to be the 152 Minute Extended Cut. It only has DD5.1 though???

What a pointless comparison. The screenshots are so ridiculously small they mean virtually nothing. 1/2 at least should've been full size.
Markgway wrote:I just want the best image quality available for the Special Edition.
We should be including the Japanese EE too then:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=GNBF-1100

Click on the pictures for a close up. As far as I can tell Disc 2 (Extras) of the R1 EE has been moved to Disc 3 so Disc 2 can be for the Theatrical Cut which is on the R1 EE as Seamless Branching anyway.

Two things to note:

1. I'm pretty sure the Japanese version has more extras
2. It was only released in March this year so it's conceivable that it's even better looking than the R1 version.

The lack of DTS, same Extreme title and same cover art does make me believe it's pretty much a port though. Considering the price difference I'd opt for the R1 EE.

$13.25/£7 delivered:

http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=54952

For £7 you can find out for yourself and besides it does have an semi-exclusive director's commentary (it's on the Japanese EE too).

No, it has DTS. I wonder what the bitrate is though? Cuz a DD-Plus 5.1 track has a higher bitrate than a half-bitrate DTS track.

Mark refuses to own two versions of the same film and in this I'd agree when they're so similar releases.

Are you talking about a video or audio bit-rate? The DVD Pacific listing says plain old DD5.1, which sucks.

True regarding the bit-rate but it does effectively mean every release now gets DTS quality. Dolby TrueHD is 10mbps so much higher than Full-rate DTS.

I don't actually reckon it will be all that good quality (other than being able to play it on a TV screen, big plus) as Blu-ray discs have really suffered lately.
Good find.

The DVD Pacific listing does clearly say 152 minutes, not exactly accurate but then neither is DVD Compare. It's good to see they've included both commentaries but otherwise what a rip-off.

Where are all the hours of extras? No HD Audio???

Personally I think the DVD Beaver comparison says it all.

While I can believe the PAL Enhanced European R2 and R4 versions are superior to the NTSC R1 UE, the R1 EE I reckon would beat it again as it comes from a Remastered HD Source.

The Beaver comparison is actually very good with lots of zoom in's showing it goes: Full HD EE, Non-HD EE, UE. The UE is clearly the worst.

I would get the R1 EE but the UE really is perfect with everything you could need.

Japanese DVDs are too rich for my blood... I never bother with them.

The Beaver caps are useful up to a point, but I'm not gonna sit that close to the screen and watch small areas blown up. I'd rather they'd have also shown us the caps at regular size. This is what I'm hoping this comparison here will rectify. So if anyone has the Extreme edition, the UK version, and indeed, any version they think is worth examining, please post your matching caps. I know lots of you have this title...

The trouble is most have the R1 UE. It's all I was interested in.

Agreed the Japanese DVD at £35 is to much which only leaves the EE. I can't see the UK R2 UE being much improved.

TBH for £7 isn't the commentary worth it alone? i.e - Just buy it and see for yourself. It's not expensive.

The TV size is pretty much worthless as the transfers remastered so you're going to see an improvement no matter what size TV you use (except a portable of course).

£7 isn't a massive amount for a special edition DVD, but there's so many films I wanna buy, that I see little point in prioritising yet another version of a film I already have unless I know that the image is improved (and the best I can get). It never occured to me that all those who own T2 would have the same version, lol.

I should see how the UE looks on my TV, but I was very happy with it.

It's the only DVD with seamless branching for all 3 versions, that appeals to most people.

Silly, what do you think I meant? Audio - You'd think that'd be hugely obvious since sentences about audio tracks directly proceeds the quoted comment within the same paragraph. Grim is not a good role model for you, find a new friend for your play-dates in the sandbox.
The DVD Pacific listing says plain old DD5.1, which sucks.
Yup, for Blu-ray is DD-Plus is not the minimum required for audio format like it is for HD-DVD.
True regarding the bit-rate but it does effectively mean every release now gets DTS quality. Dolby TrueHD is 10mbps so much higher than Full-rate DTS.
Totally, I'd love to hear like say T2 in a bit-rate that high.
It's good to see they've included both commentaries but otherwise what a rip-off.

The likes of T1, T2 and Robocop are guaranteed multiple dips on the HD formats. Hopefully when I finally get around to getting HD equipment they will have sorted those titles out, cuz T1, T2, Robocop and Lawrence of Arabia are the first HD titles that I'd like to buy.
I don't actually reckon it will be all that good quality (other than being able to play it on a TV screen, big plus) as Blu-ray discs have really suffered lately.
Blu-ray is a complete joke thus far. Encoding video in MPEG-2, failure in manufacturing dual-layered discs.
It's the only DVD with seamless branching for all 3 versions, that appeals to most people.
The R1 UE is also the only affordable version with DTS for both the TC & Extended Cut. It maybe long OOP but is readily available quite cheaply 2nd hand, since there's so many around (none of that OOP Criterion massive price tag non-sense).

I own many, as its the best film ever made and is worth it.

The Region 1 EE from what I can tell from all the versions I have owned is the best looking. Compared to the ultimate version the EE blows it away. Jim's comentary is a plus thats for sure as the origanal Ultimate commentary is pure 100% shit.

The UE commentary isn't great but it's okay.

On a scale of 1 to 10 Romero what would you give the UE and EE?

As for T2 if you could Romero that would be grand.

I'm not sure why posting caps would cause anyone's PC to explode... but there you go.

It wouldnt cause it to explode, I cannot get onto the net for more than a few seconds before I am cut off and loose connection :) so uploading anything isnt possibel at all, or downloading anything for that matter :( going on forums is easy, but anything else is shit. I have been trying to get help from them dickwads at AOL for 5 days now with endless email banter back and forth between about 8 different guys, they are total and utter wankers who know bugger all. Indian help really is the worst in the world! I used to get probs sorted instantly with old AOL, now with the Indian helpers its a joke.

I am now looking for a different service provider as AOL are scum, they even cut me off becuase they got sick of me asking for help! well its their AOL Created problem, sodding solve it muppets!

Thats why.. and the fact the PC is broke in many other ways too, like seriously overheating and turning off as soon as I do anything more than look on the net

I wish it was, I am just very unlucky. Its been broke out the box 3 years back, they fixed it many times and each time it seemed ok, then broke months later the same things each time! now the warrenty has ran out I can do bugger all. Except moan and tell everyone never to buy from Mesh.

MESH are basically evil scum and AOL are just as bad, customer service in the world really sucks! such a shame, hope my next PC works and I go with a company who know what the hell they are talking about, even with Google I know more than Mesh and AOL customer service combined. AOL couldnt even tell me how to save my emails! thats how pathetic they are.

I have cut down a massive amount :) only bought 4 last month, thats cutting back a lot for me.

PC wise I am getting one and could get one right now, its just not a great time to get one at the moment as too much change in the PC industry for my taste, maybe another year and it will all be settled and the major new tech will be out and at ok prices :) but saying that if my PC get worse or blows I will be getting a new one :D
