Check my new Forum... *Shameful plug... but it has to be don

Post by thelostdragon »

Hey,

I think it has become very silent here. I'm not asking anybody to move for good. Personally, I'm fine with the forum of minipocky, but as I have my own site, I integrated a forum and it is the latest version of the old BnB-forum style, namely pnForum Version 2.0.1.

I initialised and activated the whole thing during the last night, but I still need moderators and if anybody here would like to become one (and is of trustworthy nature, he he he!), just sign up at my site and let me know about your desire to be a mod.

Also feel free to give me suggestions, what forum sections I could still need and which I should rather remove or whatever else you wanna tell me.

PM or email. Both is great! Thanks (*hope*). :D

Cheeky you've already got a forum. Won't that mean having to change the url if you're going to combine them?

Great WKW article here: http://www.hongkonglegends.net/fulltime ... rs/wkw.htm

I'm confused when has "As Tears Go By" been known as "Final Victory"? If this is the third part of a trilogy, what on earth is the fist part? I didn't know half the stuff in this article. It's a pity "Summer in Beijing" was canned, any idea what it would've been about?

I like the closer look section too. How do you manage to find so much background information? You may want to plug your website more as it's full of interesting reading that "I" for example didn't even know existed, until now.

BTW your CTHD website no longer works.

edit: I've found this which refers to "Final Victory":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094387/

I'm now even more confused, bar the WKW connection (it looks like he wrote it) there is nothing else linking it to WKW or Maggie Cheung for that matter.

Oh hooops! Totally forgot to setup the link to the new forum. It is at my HKL website, though.
http://www.hongkonglegends.net/index.ph ... &func=main

I'm not combining them. HKL is my main site and Fulltime Reviews is my other site. I have this forum on FTR, but nobody signed up there, so I will leave it as it is.

Thanks for your kind words however. WOW! Didn't know I still had that link to my CTHD site there under its review. Yeah, it was my second website ever which I had dedicated to the great film. It was completely in German. Did you ever see the site? It's offline now. Lycos deleted it and I no longer had it on my hard drive.

As for the "A Close Look"-section, Mike Leeder and Bey Logan were so kind to provide me with some info for some of the articles. Finally, someone appreciates my hard work, he he he! Really, for each of these longer articles, it took me lots of time to research, gather info (from audio commentaries etc etc) and to write a text in decent English, which as you know is not my first language.

FTR has been around for a long time and people barely go there. So I focussed on the HKL site and kept FTR to update every now and then as it is my little baby and I won't leave it for good. I even stopped thinking about the idea of moving the FTR content completely to my HKL site.

If that's the case what does "So right now I am transferring all the data from my other website Fulltime Reviews to this website." mean? :P

LOL What's R10? :D I take it "Artsmagic" are a German Asian distributor?

I may have seen your CTHD website but I don't believe I did sorry. I don't expect websites to purely be in English so would've had a gander. I could always use translator if I got stuck or ask a German friend.

I imagine virtually no one looks at full time reviews (in the scale you'd prefer) is because of the basic look of the site. Your HKL website looks more professional. My own website looks amateurish but that's fine as it's only intended as a resource to display information about me nothing more.

It sounds like you've known Bey for a while?

You may want to transfer your articles to HKL.de. I mention this as it's a real shame more people don't read them. Going by experience people's knowledge of a second language is weaker on the written word and with this in mind you must be cracking at speaking it, no? Apart from the odd mistake your written English is fantastic. I wouldn't know English wasn't your first language if I didn't know already. The articles are much better written than many articles from English speakers!

Off topic I'm curious you seem to write your articles from a British perspective quoting the BBFC but not mentioning your own film censors, why?

p.s - You never got back to me re: my website :(

People might start wondering what the hell the webmaster, me, is talking about when saying "Fulltime Reviews" and follow the link, lol.
LOL What's R10? :D I take it "Artsmagic" are a German Asian distributor?
I don't even think that there is R7 - R9, is there? I have heard that R10 is used on travelling airplanes and ships. Might be wrong though. I wrote "R0 - R10" to ensure that all DVD talk, no matter what region goes in there, lol. Shall I re-title that forum?
I imagine virtually no one looks at full time reviews (in the scale you'd prefer) is because of the basic look of the site. Your HKL website looks more professional. My own website looks amateurish but that's fine as it's only intended as a resource to display information about me nothing more.
You know, I think the fact that your statement's right is sad. People prefer style over substance (which is why certain films work at the box office and others don't). I honestly prefer the content of a site (as long as the font size of a longer text isn't 1 or 60). Because I noticed I am in a large minority with this opinion, I started top learn PHP, MySQL and PostNuke to build my new layout and database.

As for your site... I have been there recently and I envy you for your trips to all these wonderful places, especially China, Thailand and Malaysia. I haven't read all your journals, but is there one for Malaysia? I'd love to read your impressions.

By the way... signed your guestbook.
It sounds like you've known Bey for a while?
Through emails since uuuuhmmm... like the beginning of 2002. By phone calls since sometime in the Summer of 2003 and personally since October 2004. Great guy, not only in the commentaries, he he he.
You may want to transfer your articles to HKL.de. I mention this as it's a real shame more people don't read them.
Well, the thing is that the PostNuke styled site is most ideal for news, like new DVDs, new films etc etc. Posting old stuff there won't make anybody look for it as the articles are displayed by the date they were posted. Look at the HKL DVD reviews. The lower you scroll, the less does the number of reads get.

Thanks for your concern, though. Very much appreciated.
Going by experience people's knowledge of a second language is weaker on the written word and with this in mind you must be cracking at speaking it, no?
I always found myself better in writing, because I am more trained in writing than I am in talking. When I go to a country where I have to speak nothing else than English, then it usually takes about 2 - 3 days before I talk fluently. While during writing, you can always think about the right vocabulary to use.
I went to an English school when I lived in Jordan. This improved my English a lot. I suck at science stuff, like maths or physics, but can adapt languages quite well. As for now, I speak and read fluently: German, Arabic, English and a bit of French. And I am currently studying Mandarin and Chinese writing. I love to learn languages.
The articles are much better written than many articles from English speakers!
Oh come on, lol! I doubt that. My old English teacher should read that comment! Maybe he would have given me a B instead of an E in my "Scarface"-homework. He he he!

When I quickly write a review on one day, then I think it turns out average language-wise. As for the long articles, I sometimes spend a week to get it right. I let someone else read over it etc etc. It's like movie magic. Jackie Chan can't catch the turning fan the first time. He has to do many re-shots, he he! :P
Off topic I'm curious you seem to write your articles from a British perspective quoting the BBFC but not mentioning your own film censors, why?
My first sites were in German as you might know (the Jackie Chan Center etc). These sites had even less visitors, which was actually the reason why I decided to write my new sites in international English. I think I mention the BBFC in a few articles, but also mention German censorship sometimes. IIRC, the first time I quote the BBFC in an article of mine is when writing about "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow". You know the cat vs. snake fight. As I pointed out earlier, whenever I decide to conduct an article for the "A Close Look at..."-section, I try to gather as much information as possible. Back then, I knew about that BBFC cut, due to the HKL DVD, but there were other films where I didn't know about what the BBFC had cut out. But then there was the original BnB-forum with all its wonderful members, discussing all the cuts. A lot of the films I love to watch do not get released over here and hence my only choice was to import them from the UK. After paying very high prices for these films, it was always a pain to find out that some of them were cut.

As for the very detailed BBFC stuff, Bey provided me mostly with info of whom at the BBFC cut what scene etc etc, lol. That was funny, because then their website did not exist and when it went online, I went their to check everything and the man was absolutely correct!

Region 1 to 6 are commercial, R7 has no use yet and R8 is for airlines and the military.

How on earth did you manage to source Bey's e-mail address?

No a PM. I don't have your e-mail address.

Any examples?

p.s - I've just sent you a pm in case you don't know.
How on earth did you manage to source Bey's e-mail address?
I sent an email to the IMPACT magazine address, telling them my intention to get in contact with Bey, who at that time was director and Hong Kong editor for this magazine. They told me, they'd forward my email and after 2 hours or so I received a reply from him.
No a PM. I don't have your e-mail address.
Oh PM! D'oh! I just see it on the top right corner. Sorry, mate!
Any examples?
Oh, various stuff. For example the earclap-cut in "Battle Creek Brawl".

Yep we sure can. It's gone off topic but I'm all for that if it's an interesting read.

p.s - Check out LD's Fulltime Reviews website, there is some top stuff there.
OK, re-title it to R0 - R6, then?
That's up to you, it's your forum. Maybe R0 - R8.

Even if R7 and R8 will never be discussed or R0 - R6.
