The lets discuss televisions thread!

You'll be hard pressed to notice EE on small 32" and 28" TVs ;) On such sets EE primarily makes the image look just sharp and good. But if you begin to study it, you'll notice what you think is a sharp picture - in reality is a picture with "lines" overwriting the real information to fool your eye into believing it is a sharp picture. ;) There was a nice document on this over at thedigitalbits.com a while back (I think).

Anyways, EE just creeps me out... and I guess most HDTV and projector users... you might notice it on a 42-ish plasma, but those screens destroys so much else of the picture that I couldn't care less... (do NOT buy a Plasma display!)

That's one of the reasons I like SuperBit discs - they actually DO look better... (at least those that I have :D)

If the image "looks" sharper but really isn't and we can't notice it's fake then that's surely good? I may be fake sharpness but it works for me.

So what should we buy instead of Plasma TVs? I've heard LCD TVs are also crap so what's left? I know rear projection is awful. That just leaves a projector and those are in-practical for most people.

Because alot of people out there have larger screens where the EE drastically destroys any details and quality in the picture - and because the image would look the same on your little telly if you upped the sharpness control a bit... so in truth, Edge Enhancement is a redunant and silly thing to apply to a dvd. :D

Rear projection TV sets are much better than LCD sets which are better than PLASMA sets, which ALL are worse than CRT's. CRT's are actually the best way still to view TV/FILM at home, best contrast, best blacklevels etc. etc. The biggest problem with rear projection TV's are their limited viewing angles. But if you direct compare a proper setup Plasma with a RPS you'll see how shite the plasma is... and if you go for a demo... have them put on "live" programming (soccer is good) and certainly NOT animation (which is used in 75% of all demos - because the limited colourranges and "unrealistic" images just looks great on plasma :D)

Honesttly from all the ones I have seen Rear Screen is absolutely shite, seen very expensive ones and all in different settings and every time they look 100% shit.

Plasmas from the ones I have seen are far better, when I start trawling thru my research for a new TV I will be auditioning many TVs and from the look of it a Plasma may be on my menue, or a nice normal Tube TV :)
but I wouldnt pay for a Rear Screen ever after seeing such pathetic things as the ones I watched things on, unless I just happened to see really crap ones :)

You gotta be kidding me?! Plasma look like shite, colour smearing, shadowing, ghosting, bleeding all over the screen, and you can't see it? The thing with RPS is that you have to sit down in front of it - smackdown in the center... that's the only (though big) drawback to them really...

For my TV I went with a CRT (tube TV as you say) - which is the best you can get for money... no, it's not flat and "sexy" ... but then again, I don't intend to show of the box ... :D

I've heard soccer coverage is a good thing to test the picture on that sort of TV. In my local we have a newish rear projection (I think?) TV (older) and a brand new one (which I was told it was a plasma anyway :P ), on the older TV the picture looks crap IMO, really fuzzy and not sharp or detailed at all with shadowing all over the place. On the newer one the picture is a lot sharper.

I've never seen a TV that you can do this and besides I don't want to keep having to change my TV settings. I leave them as they are and how I like them,

Thanks for the explanation though.

Whenever I've seen rear projection TVs I've always thought they were huge and the quality was crap tbh. I've not seen many plasma TVs and not in detail but I've much preferred what I've seen.

LCDs haven't hugely impressed me but again I've not looked properly.

I've heard many people say LCDs TVs are crap. Why do you disagree? CRTs maybe the best but they don't go any higher than 36" WS I think and besides again they're huge. The floor space you need for one is enormous. You can't get CRTs that support progressive scan too right?

If I buy to buy a large TV (35/40 inches plus) it would either be LCD or Plasma. I agree though animation is a bad idea when it comes to testing. As it's easy to make animation look great. My next TV will probably be a 32" flat screen 100 hertz CRT. As any bigger would engulf the room I use for home cinema. It always looks awful IMO when you walk into a room and all you see is this enormous TV.

Plus CRT TVs are by far the cheapest. You can get a 32" flat screen 100 hertz for under £550 easily (i.e - from a decent make). I'm looking at the Toshiba models as they have component inputs. Better quality and great for saving on scarts.

Speaking of monitors what's the different between a TFT and LCD monitor?

Basically the same... LCD is more "generic" and can mean different types of LCD technology, while TFT is a specific LCD technology (the most widely used one today I believe)...

On a related note; I mentioned a report on EE at thedigitalbits... well, I was wrong. It was over at VideoPhile.info (http://www.videophile.info/Guide_EE/Page_01.htm)

Thanks. What other types of LCD technology are there? Are LCD TVs TFT?

Rear projection has by far the worst picture quality. LCD is not much better - its sharp, but blurs like hell on motion, and has an unnatural look to it.

Plasma is the best technology for larger screens at the moment, period. Have you actually seen decent plasma screens? And I'm not talking about Sony (their screens are made by LG and Samsung) or any other cheaper makes.

Take a look at the Panasonic & Pioneer screens. They are far better than all others.

But I still agree that normal CRT still has the best picture of them all.

Oh, and bradavon, CRT TVs actually have a maximum size of 40" in the 16:9 format! ;) It's just that not many manufacturers make them because of cost. Loewe made a 40" Aconda model a few years ago...
