Hey,
HEROES SHED NO TEARS is up for pre order on HKLs site. Unusual, minimalist cover art.
http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk/index.php?pid=1863
From John Woo, the director of Hong Kong movie classics including Bullet in the Head and The Killer comes his ferocious war movie Heroes Shed No Tears.
Eddy Ko stars as Chinese mercenary Chan Chung who is hired to kidnap an infamous Thai drug baron and bring him to justice. On the trail they conflict with a Vietnamese general and from that point on find themselves fighting on two increasingly vicious fronts with more yet to come!
Anyone tiring of the formulaic 'Hollywood' John Woo will revel in this, his first slo-mo gunfest of gory glory, where an eye for an eye is played out in unforgettable flesh tearing action. This is Woo at his most brutal and with an arsenal of explosive mayhem, he pulls out all the stops to show the true hell of war: John Woo style!
Extras:
# UK Promotional Trailer
# From Hong Kong to Hollywood: An Interview with John Woo
# A tribute to Lam Ching Ying

hey,
there's been discussion of this at KFF and from my memory, some facts remain clear, some unclear:
Woo's original edit from 1984 was actually released in Australia as Sunset Warriors but rarity is probably quite the issue. Reasons why it was left unreleased in HK ranges from being unfinished, not to the distributors satisfaction etc etc. Then when Woo broke...money on the horizon so...
The re-edit for HK cinema release in 1986/87 under the title Heroes Shed No Tears (a good English translation of the Chinese title of A Better Tomorrow...coincidentally) reportedly had more footage shot by either a Korean or American crew. Among other things a pretty lame sex scene with the Westerner friend of Eddy Ko's character. Still, I'm not sure it was a DRASTIC re-edit and if it was dubbed in Cantonese at that point.
I'm sure some details are missing or incorrect here so take it away, Mark.

Just to add to Ken's post:
The film was originally spoken in Cantonese.
Filmed in 1983.
Released only in Australia and Korea in 1984 (according to a poster at KFF the Korean print was slightly rejigged from Woo's dir's cut)
The DC apparently ran 100m (as opposed to the 85m print now in circulation).
The re-edit was released in HK in 1986.
Rumours suggest that the DC was released on VHS in Aus back in the mid-80's, but NO ONE in fandom seems to have it.
It's been suggested that Japanese and Australian finance was put into the production, though only the Korean production company has thus far been identified. I would thus class this as a HK-Korean co-production until further evidence comes to light.
