I know, another review also says it's just the international version too. What a bummer!

Re: Sion Sono
yeah, this one:
http://cinemart-online.co.uk/2011/11/23 ... vd-review/
Fuck fuck fuck. I'm not paying a penny for that piece of shit. From what I've heard about the Japanese cut Miki Mizuno is the best thing in the film... and her character has been almost completely deleted from the international version.
I'm still hoping it would be some kind of mistake... that they actually had both versions, and the screener discs featured only the short one... but then, it has the Jasper Sharp commentary, too, so I guess that can't be the case...
Do they have a facebook page or something where you could ask about this?

I see they didn't change the brightness level from the Japanese standard, which DVD Beaver doesn't realise
I particularly like capture 5

Hung:
Thoughts? Why is the Japanese cut so long then if it's not his preferred version?
- Eureka.the BD contains the international (Sono's preferred, ergo directors cut) of the film. We may issue a special edition a few years down the line, but tge longer version really adds nothing to the film, the international version is much more succinct.

- Marc Walkow (Sushi Typhoon / Sono's friend)It's not the director's cut. That's just a PR story.

Re: Sion Sono
- Excuse the dodgy English, it's translated from French via Google Translate.Regarding the two versions of the film (2:23 assembling at Cannes and assembling for 1:58 in theaters), which is your favorite and why?
The one I personally prefer the version is shorter. But I like the long version also much, it's my job. It turns out that shortening the film, I found the short version more interesting. It's like two variations of the same work, different.

It's the same as Bright Future then, Kiyoshi Kurosawa was asked to cut it down for the international version, and he then ended up slightly preferring that one. But as with Bright Future, I want the original cut of Guilty of Romance.

Fucking fuck fuck fuuuck. My BD has gone missing during delivery, so I can't even return it to Amazon. Now the loss is on Amazon rather than Eureka. ふck!!
Oh well, at least I got good laughs
"If the original package arrives afterwards, please keep the package with our compliments, as the cost of returning the package is likely to be overly expensive. You may know of a local charity which would benefit from the item."

Who is this Jasper Sharp fella, and why is he so important that he takes up disc-space where the original cut of the movie could have fitted...!?
'International cuts': I fucking hate them. How many movies have been complete ruined by these dumbass decisions that different audiences need different viewing experiences!? Too fucking many.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Jasper Sharp is... emh, make that was, a Japanese cinema expert... who did a commentary to the disc... without knowing there was a 30 minute longer version playing in Japanese cinemas at the same fucking time he recorded the track.

Ah, thanks... and instead of them redoing the commentary for the longer version, they just thought: "screw the longer version!"!?HungFist wrote:Jasper Sharp is... emh, make that was, a Japanese cinema expert... who did a commentary to the disc... without knowing there was a 30 minute longer version playing in Japanese cinemas at the same fucking time he recorded the track.

Re: Guilty of Romance (Sion Sono) (R18+)
No, they (=Eureka) seemed to prefer the shorter version. And now they justify it with some formal bullshit statement Sono gave to a French reporter in France when the International Version was offered for distributors and the press asked which version he prefers...
Many other people, though, seem to think the International Version loses the film's best parts.

Re: Guilty of Romance (Sion Sono) (R18+)
Film in brief:
Guilty of Romance (Japan, 2011)
Sion Sono recycles his trademarks in this long psycho-sexual drama. Solid performances (even from the former gravure idol Megumi Kagurazaka) and some stylish visuals can’t overcome the fact that Sono has done too many movies in the similar vein before, although with less drama emphasis. At nearly 2½ hours the films comes out a drawn-out arthouse-exploitation effort with occasional violence and frequent full frontal nudity from each of the three female protagonists.

As far as I know, the German release by Rapid Eye is the first one outside of Japan to feature the longer 144 minute cut of the film.

So the key question: English subtitles?kemushi wrote:As far as I know, the German release by Rapid Eye is the first one outside of Japan to feature the longer 144 minute cut of the film.
