True, but that's a case of being stuck with shoddy elements. I can take 5mins of missing footage in those circumstances. Now, 20min cut for the German print of HITMAN IN THE HAND OF BUDDHA? Ach, nine!!!!Markgway wrote:So was I until I found out it was a german print missing about 5 mins of footage.Ivan Drago wrote:I don't mind an old beat up print, I was perfectly happy with Soulblade's SNUFF BOTTLE CONNECTION.

Are you sure it was a German print? How do you know? Didn't know LOAF was ever released in Germany. Was it a cinema print?luckystars wrote:HKL synched Mandarin audio with a complete German print. The HK print had some alternate scenes so the audio wouldn't fit..

It's just common knowledge, maybe from the ADG forum? Anyway it's got the superimposed title card over the original.thelostdragon wrote:Are you sure it was a German print? How do you know? Spannick told me there was no german cinema release of LEGEND, when I suggested the german companies look into restoring it. Maybe I'm thinking of another film though, or he was!

You reckon they were originally released with 5.1 soundtracks?grim_tales wrote:Brad are you saying Miracles, Iron Monkey, FC had remixes? If they did I didnt notice TBH.
They did basically apologised later for cropping those three (it was three right? That they cropped down to 1.78:1) but given the very limited market value of that film, they were never going to re-release it.Ivan Drago wrote:HKL went to the trouble of remastering LEGEND OF A FIGHTER but then went and ruined what should have been a great release with the cropping. That said, I'm grateful they released it in some form as its a cracking rare movie, Grommit!

I've never in my life heard a remix of a Hong Kong film that's better than the original mono.

Good remix = Those where the added elements are on a seperate channel and thus can be turned off to get the original mono/stereo.
Bad Remix = Everything else.
Depends on the type of film though and what type of work is done, for instance Anime holds strong potential for people wanting to undertake a remix. The remix of Akira or the 5.1 remixes of Cowboy Bebop are good examples of that.

Bad remix =
New Foley that changes the character of the soundscape or distinctive sounds from the original film.
Substitute score/changed cues.
Missing elements (all sounds/dialogue and music cues)
Obvious added elements (usually excessive environmental sounds)
Unbalanced levels and use of booming sub.
This can be applied to any genre, not just HK films, or films that were originally mono.
Mono or discrete remixes can be ruined by distortion, muffled sound, poor sync, reverb/echo/timing.
Mono doesn't automatically mean a better viewing experience, but can if handled well.
I just ask for a fair treatment of the films A/V (and subs). Why would I pass up on a well handled Blu-Ray of a film, if theres a letterboxed DVD with mono?
That's just obsessive...

What about the mono tracks that are in an awful state? How do they compare to stereo remixes?Markgway wrote:I've never in my life heard a remix of a Hong Kong film that's better than the original mono.

If the mono is distorted or fucked up in some way then of course that's a problem and a remix MIGHT be less painful. But let's assume both are good quality.bradavon wrote:What about the mono tracks that are in an awful state? As long as the mono is included they can offer as many remixes as they like. I'm for more choice not less. What I can't abide is fans who say it doesn't matter.

Although Cine Asia's product is a bit limited - picked up YOUNG BRUCE LEE, then promptly returned it when I found out it had been cut by 10 minutes! - it was a delight to see HMV have a shelf full of martial arts titles, just like in the good old days!
Have now bought Cine Asia's SHINJUKU INCIDENT. Am looking forward to watching it.

HK DVD NTSC
UK DVD PAL
All films in the UK on DVD are on the PAL format. This runs 1/25 second faster than the USA counterpart, NTSC.

That's true, but 114 mins in PAL does not equal 129 min NTSC, maybe the UK DVD is a shorter version.

It's the new Super-PAL format. Runs 13% faster than NTSC. Haven't you heard of it?

Has it actually been confirmed? Or are people just going on running times. Which is hardly an accurate measure.

Would it seriously be 'bizarre'!? It's more rare for an asian movie to get released UNCUT then it is to be butchered.saltysam wrote:i'll check the running time of the hk blu of ybl when i get a chance....would be bizarre if they'd cut it.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Yeah, I've lost count of the asian films I've ignored on UKBD because the fucking Asian studios only send out the "International Edit" to western distributors (who obviously don't give a fuck enough to send them back).Yi-Long wrote:Would it seriously be 'bizarre'!?
