KG: Karate Girl (Rina Takeda)

Post by HungFist »

Rina Takeda's next movie. Directed by the screenwriter of High Kick Girl. Gonna kick ass, obviously.

The teaser trailer stars with "No CG, No Wires, No Stunts" (meaning no stuntmen)

Unfortunately I don't know any other sources than amazon. However, Toei's official sub-site for the dvd has some very nice video footage available:

I met and interviewed Rina (one-to-one) on May 7 when she appeared as a special guest at the Terracotta Far East Film Festival in London for a special screening of Karate Girl. She gave an impressive karate demonstration and showed off her skill with the nunchaku before the showing of the film and a Q&A session afterwards. She is the most sweetest person and has all the qualities of a great idol. I've now become a big fan, so thanks for the idol DVD images. can't wait to see Kunoichi - Ninja Girl!!!

Nice to hear that, and welcome to the forum, Shogun. Did you watch any other films at the fest? I took a brief look the program a few weeks ago, seemed to have nice picks (KG, Yakuza Weapon with Taku in person, etc.).

Thanks for the greeting, it's nice to be here! Unfortunately I didn't get to see any of the other films - wished I had now though, I would have liked to have met some of the other special guests. I choose Karate Girl in particular with the purpose of interviewing Rina. Rina's team brought along their own interpreter for the Q&A, but because I invited a Japanese friend of mine to come along, and arranged it beforehand, I was given the chance to interview her separately. She said the one thing she wanted to try whilst in London was Fish & Chips lol. I was told later that she tried them and liked them! :)

Rina also co-stars in the second season of Dogu-chan (Dogoon V):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ancient_Dogoo_Girl
http://dogoon5.jp/

I saw the movie edit of the first series, and it wasn't very good except for Erika Yazawa. But now in the second series they have Erika, Rina, and Maki's on board too. And I saw Asami in the trailer. Wonder who else is gonna show up. Maybe worth a watch after all... :)

For those of you who are interested, I was fortunate enough to interviewe Rina Takeda when she came to London as a Special Guest at the Terracotta Far East Film Festival. She is very kawaii in person - not at all like her character in High Kick Girl or Karate Girl. You can read it here

Awesome clips Image I didn't know she should speak English Image Knowing Japanese standards, that's a a lot more than what most learn in school. And far better than what some other Japanese actors come up with when they try to read from a piece of paper....

I never was that much of a Rina fan, but those clips totally converted me. What a lovely girl Image

I think Rina's English is limited, but her pronounciation, however, is very good - it was very brave of her, I think, to speak in English, she was pretty funny at times too.
She is very cute!!!!

Film
I will review the film later when I have more time. But in nutshell: action excellent, editing flaws from High Kick Girl all corrected, storytelling a bit messy but comes with amusing bits and some great one liners. Looks good, sounds good (plenty of bone cracking on the soundtrack), is good. The 13 year old Hina Tobimatsu is Japan’s new official kicking machine - she flies without wires (constantly mistaking her opponents as "stairs") and can take down 20 men without the director having to yell "cut". Major improvement over High Kick Girl.

R2J Toei Deluxe Edition DVD

Disc 1: Movie (DVD-9 / 4.94 KB)
Anamorphic Widescreen (progressive)
Japanese DD 5.1 (448 kbps)
91 min
+ Original trailers and teasers (5 min)
+ Bonus trailers and commercials (13 min)

Disc 2: Bonus Disc (DVD-5 / 4.13 GB)

- Behind the Scenes (53 min)
Billed as "Documentary", this is almost an hour worth of behind the scenes footage from the action scenes, with optional commentary by producer / action director Fuyuhiko Nishi and action coordinator Misako Nagashima. Video footage of Richard Heselton standing on the roof with a helmet on his head while Takeda and Tobimatsu practice headkicks is worth seeing!

- 100 Karate Moves (6 min)
This is basically compiled stuff from the Behind the Scenes feature

- Exhibition Match (9 min)
Rina Takeda vs. Kazutoshi Yokoyama. Stage event match, performing one of the film’s action scenes live.

- Shinjuku Premiere: Part 1 (19 min)
This is standard premiere until special guest Mayumi Uchida of AKB 48 shows up. Being a karate skilled girl (she practiced Kyokushin karate, that is, Sonny Chiba karate!) she and Takeda take a few rounds of jan ken pon. The winner gets to kick the loser!

- Shinjuku Premiere: Part 2 (12 min)
Discussion after the film. Takeda, Naka, Tobimatsu, Heselton,Kimura and Nishi attend.

- Ready. Steady. Go! (4 min)
KG music video using footage mainly from Angel Rina. This may be the best extra on the disc – let’s just say Angel Rina is gonna sell like hot cakes after people get to see this.

- Poster Gallery (2 pictures)
Cast and Crew Introduction (text screens)

Disc 3: CD
Ready. Steady. Go! single, with standard and remix versions of the song. The CD appears to be limited to first press, in other words, will go out of print if isn’t already

Rina Takeda is probably the most beautiful female star in the world right now.

Can't think of anyone who comes even remotely close to her.

I wonder how many people watched this film with fansubs... or, as I would refer them, "fictional subs". You see, in addition to terrible grammar they're almost fully made up

Apparently the subs were made by someone who only knows very basic Japanese. The timings are right and the easiest dialogue (hello, I understand, wait, let's go etc.) is correctly translated, which might fool you into believing the subs are a real deal. But the rest seems to be completely made up. The subber was probably guessing based on plot summary.

A few examples

Scene: bad guys steal Master Kurenai's black belt
Dialogue: "The black belt was taken from him in front of his eyes"
Subtitles: "And it was an attack carried out by Kurenai sister shoziru kurubi"
* How did master Kurenai's black belt (kuro obi) become "Kurenai sister shoziru kurubi"??!!

Scene: narration after the opening battle
Dialogue: "This is where our story begins"
Subtitles: "And he destroyed all the dojo"

Scene: Rina demostrates a high kick for karate students
Dialogue: "Well, then... I need one more bottle. Let's begin"
Subtitles: "So... high kick. I will show a high kick technique. Please help"

Scene: two villains, a guy and a young girl, ask karate trainees to fight them
Dialogue: "If you're afraid of me, this little girl will fight you instead"
Subtitles: "I understand your problem, so Sonoko will fight"
* kono (this) + ko (child)

Scene: Rina is told the bad guys are after her black belt
Dialogue: "That black belt... is targeted"
Subtitles: Sakurobi... we will meet again
* kuro obi (black belt) has somehow mutated into "sakurobi", which sounds like someone's name

Scene: A movie theater employee tries to calm down people after Rina has stopped two thieves
Dialogue: "Please forgive us... the movies on screens 5, 7 and 8 will start soon. People who have tickets please advance to the entrance"
Subtitles: "Everyone, please forgive us. The theatre is opened. You can buy some food if you want. That is all. Thank you for you attention"
* you can buy some food... WTF??!!
