Well to me the best of both worlds was to buy both the Eastern Eye and Premier Asia releases - that means I have the original version of the film and stacks of extras, plus the bonus of an extra soundtrack if I want to listen to that for a change...

I usually like the music that HKL & PA produce for their trailers and DVD menus. There is a cool special feature on the PA release of "Bang-Rajan" where a camera team followed their componist to the orchestra that does the music for them. I haven't seen the PA version of "Ong-Bak", yet, but I have seen both, the Thai release and the Besson-cut. While I am mad about the cuts, I'm happy he took out the techno music which in my opinion was just going on my nerves. I'm not saying that the hip hop stuff was the better choice (although I like the track "J'reste Ghetto" over the credits). Maybe the PA music will be my definite choice to watch the film.

I'm going to own all three versions of the film as soon as I get the PA disc and I'm not selling any of them, especially not the R4, because I still want to keep the original version of the film. I'm also of the opinion that a film should not be edited by anybody without the approval of the director or himself. Sometimes, it can make films so much better (e.g. "Daredevil").

The Duelist

Six years after rocking the world with the incredible action thriller "Nowhere To Hide", Korean director Lee Myung-se returns with swordplay thriller "Duelist". Set during the Choson period in Korean history, the film tells of a tom-boyish detective (Ha Ji-won) who finds herself falling for an enigmatic assassin (Kang Dun-wun) while she investigates a case of forgery.

The great Ahn Sung-ki (Silmido, Nowhere To Hide, The Warrior) co-stars. Much like Nowhere To Hide, the film has a very physical feel to it, with the cast being expected to perform the majority of their stunts and physical actions. The films leading actress, the lovely Ha Ji-won, suffered what she belived to be a minor injury during the shoot, but carried on filming, only to discover she had broken part of her neck bone when she went for a check-up, after production was completed.

Myths and Stars

While his time travelling fantasy "The Myth" holds the current box office crown in Hong Kong & China, Jackie Chan is already in pre-production for his next two projects.

The first will re-unite him with "New Police Story" director, Benny Chan, for the action comedy "Project BB", which will also co-star Eric Tsang set to begin shooting in October.

The new year should see Chan heading for Japan to start work on the dark "Shinjuko Incident" for former Shaw Brother's hearthrob turned award-winning director Derek Yee("Viva Erotica", "Cest La Vie Mon Cheri") The film, which is being touted as an action- drama, will still feature several action scenes as it tells the story of Chan's character: a Chinese immigrant trying to overcome a problematic time in his life.

Chan and Yee have been talking about working together for more than 10 years, Yee recently directed Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie, in the romantic drama “2 Young”.

Dragon Rising

Famed producer Harvey Weinstein revealed recently that iconic actor/director, Donnie Yen, will create the action sequences for his latest big budget all-star project Stormbreaker, scheduled for principal photography in the UK. Yen is presently in China, filming his current production, Dragon Tiger Gate, which is based on a popular Hong Kong comic book series

The video-gaming industry has also signed up Yen as an “image representative” for a new and improved version of the popular online wu-xia game, Swordsman’s Destiny II. Yen’s impeccable fluid movements will aid animators in creating believable and graceful fight movements for each of the lead characters. On the commercial front, Yen is currently mesmerizing audiences with his incredible smoldering performance in Tsui Hark’s epic swordplay adventure, Seven Swords.

Masters of Horror
The latest celebrity to join the ranks of noted genre directors working on Mick Garris' Masters of Horror anthology series is Ichi The Killer director, Takashi Miike.

Miike's episode will feature Blade Runner star Rutger Hauer, alongside a Japanese cast, and the left-of-centre cult-helmer will no doubt bring an off-beat perspective to the 18th century ghost story premise, allocated to him by the series producers.

Dragons Reunited

After 18 years of waiting, fans of Hong Kong Cinema can celebrate an announcement from Jackie Chan earlier this week, where he confirmed his plans to appear in a brand-new movie project with his two famous Kung Fu brothers, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. This will be the first time the ‘triple dragons’ have starred together since Dragons Forever in 1987.

“I did write the script for the new film myself, but it is likely to be directed by someone else,’’ said Chan, without disclosing the title of the new project. “It’s going to be a quite unique comedy film, which nobody has ever seen before.’’

Fearless

We are very much looking forward to the release of Jet Li’s new biopic, Fearless.

Currently in post-production, the movie is loosely based on the life of Chinese martial arts legend, Huo Yuanjia.

Directed by Ronny Yu, and with action choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, the movie should have the same level of quality and excitement as Fist of Legend.

Sadly, Jet Li revealed to the world’s press that he does not intend to make any more martial arts movies, and will not perform any more on-screen action, unless the project on offer is truly exceptional.

"Crying Fist" in my opinion is an awesome movie. It is probably the only boxing movie, that can compete with the first part of "Rocky". Another Korean movie called "Champion" (also released by PA) came close to that, but was missing something in my opinion. "Crying Fist" however goes into depth of explaining both characters' drive to do boxing. Life is more or less forcing them to do it and of course they meet in the boxing ring by the end of the film. Truly great movie.

LD: Have you seen the anime Hajime No Ippo!? It's an absolutely brilliant anime about boxing, and everytime you really get to know the opponents and their motivations as well... which is awesome. The action is pretty damn good and it's very exciting at times

You should definately check it out if you have the chance...

About 20 minutes an episode, as you can skip the beginning and ending song, plus at every start of an episode you usually get a very short 'what happened before' sequence... so you can play 2 episodes ...(and if your German trains ride as much on time as our Dutch trains (HA!), I'm sure you could squeeze in 3 episodes

May check both films out sometime.

What did you think of Ali? IMO Michael Mann crafted an adequate film, but it was ruined by Will Smith's craptacular performance. If only Jamie Foxx had been established as a major dramatic actor at that point so that he could've been cast Ali, then we may've had a classic-worthy status film.

I think Ali was a neat film. But it is of course based on a real person and to be honest, I like the fictious story of 'Rocky' more.

But I guess I'll have to check it out again. Have only seen it once.

I think the fault with 'Ali' was mostly that the movie was a bit boring, where-as the real life of Ali was extremely interesting and exciting. This was ofcourse due to Ali himself, who was so much more then just a boxer, but also because of the time he lived in...

Michael Mann created a nice bio-pic, but it's never as exciting as the real deal, especially when the lead actor (who I personally rate rather highly) doesn't come close to having the charisma and 'bravoure' that Ali had.
Will Smith is a good actor when he does the realistic acting of feelings and emotions (he even showcased his talent for acting on those few rare occasions that his TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air dealt with a serious issue, like his runaway dad coming back), but when he tried portraying Ali, he almost went into 'mimicking' Ali, instead of BEING Ali. It just didn't 'feel' like Ali, and it certainly didn't LOOK like Ali... so the movie failed in that sense.
Again, it's a well-made movie, but it's nowehere near as good as real footage of the REAL Ali, so you're much better off getting a few good docu's or perhaps getting a few books about Ali...

Michelle Yeoh to co-star in Indy 4?

According to Taiwanese newspaper, United Daily News, Malaysian born action-superstar, Michelle Yeoh, will be co-staring in the upcoming forth installment of the iconic Indiana Jones film series.

According to the paper, Steven Spielberg visited Michelle on the set of Memoirs of a Geisha and said to her, "Don't forget, we will work together in the Indiana Jones project." Then she replied, "I will be waiting for you." This may of course be nothing more than a rumour, but it is known that Spielberg has admired Yeoh’s work for many years, and so may wish to cast her in the long-awaited Indy 4. In our humble opinion, she would certainly make a fantastic leading-lady.
