How do you feel about death?

Post by grim_tales »

I don't know about you but I'm scared of dying :( The thought of one day not being able to think, feel, love or do anything really frightens me - if there's NOTHING after death - I can't imagine NOTHING :? What does that look like? You know how you can find out about life before youre born - wouldnt you like to know what happens after your death? :icon_suspect: :?

I can't imagine there being 'nothing' either, I actually think it's impossible simply by the fact that we exist in the first place. Energy doesn't disappear, it gets transferred and used in different forms, and since the vast majority of matter and energy in the universe is simply known as dark matter/dark energy, I wouldn't be surprised if that's extra-dimensional stuff that's out of our scientific reach (how can you examine 10-dimensional matter with 3-dimensional scientific instruments?).

I believe in the soul, and not for Christian reasons (I follow no religion). When DMT studies took place in the early '90s, people kept experiencing things 'more real than real' and would learn incredibly vast amounts of information about the universe and the origin of life from what they thought was 'God', 'Reptilian aliens' and 'Insectoid aliens'. The interesting thing about this is, DMT is thought to be released in a large amount when you die (the pineal gland has all the relevant chemical precursors to do so), which would explain the near-death experiences so many people have talked about (the tunnel, the white light, reliving your enter life in the space of a second, etc.)

Even more bizarre is that in Buddhism, it's believed that the soul enters a new foetus after 49 days of bardo, and this is exactly when the pineal gland is formed and/or releases DMT in a foetus for the first time. The pineal gland is what's known as the 'third eye' in certain religions and spiritualities, and when I tried third-eye meditation a year or two ago it worked very quickly (within 20 minutes) and totally shocked me (I felt immense power flowing through me and as if I was starting to float off my bed) so I snapped out of it and have been kind of too scared to try it again.

Why is there so much order to the universe? Could that have simply come out of chance? Even weird 'coincidental' things make you think, such as why is the Moon the exact size and distance from the Sun so that we can have a total eclipse? Isn't that actually insane? It seems more like there's a direction and intent coming from somewhere (God?) but because all the religions argue with each other and 'God' has been personified and refuted by science, it's become somewhat of a joke for modern society. But basically, I believe that 'God' is an infinite energy that all this has come from, that we are in some kind of matrix (not one that is run by robots like in the film) that lets us experience a 'life' game. 'Us' being all different facets of this energy that can experience things from different angles and have the potential to learn. In order to learn things, an all-knowing all-being energy must forget itself. :D

And to answer your topic question, I think everyone is scared of dying to varying degrees, because we fear the unknown, we fear suffering, and we fear losing our sense of self and everything and everyone that is close to us. But, my beliefs that I just outlined to you actually make me feel more comfortable about the idea of dying, but also still kind of terrified too because if I'm right, there's some crazy shit going to happen when I die rather than everything simply disappearing haha.

As an atheist (or at best agnostic) I don't believe in a "God" TBH but I don't know about there being NOTHING. I'm not sure, it seems awfully morbid and just scary IMO. Will life just carry on normally for others? I guess so...
Even when you're dead youre doing something. You're lying down, perfectly still, right?! The Big Bang says once there was nothing in the universe. But how can you make something from nothing? You can't, it doesnt make sense.
I get ya, I also fear the unknown and suffering, if I have to die it should be peaceful.
Sometimes I think dying is just like going to sleep but then I know you wont wake up :o :(

Exactly. They're not thinking outside the box, it's like a foetus in a womb believing that the womb is everything, but then it's born into an incredibly more vast world, and that's pretty much how I see death.

I am not in the slightest bit scared of death. In fact, honestly, sometimes I welcome it. I don't believe there is a "god". I think we go through enough suffering every day in life - death will end the suffering. I look forward to it.

I don't really know how I feel about 'death'.

I never used to fear it when I was a teen, probably also because of the depression and all, but now that I have a girlfriend, I automatically link my death to how it would affect her. I'm not sure if I wanna grow very old and deteriorate and all that shit, loosing teeth and hair and just decomposing and stuff. On the other hand, I'd like to have children and grandchildren and still experience shit that hasn't happened yet etc etc. So I guess I don't really have a 'reference'.

When you think about it all, really deep, you will just think yourself into a depression. Meaning of life, regrets, etc etc.

I don't know if there is anything 'after' death. I suspect there isn't, but obviously I'd like]re to be something. Truth is, we don't know and we probably never will know. We just have to 'hope', I guess...

I don't want to deteririorate and grow old and stuff either, I want to experience as much as possible :)
I'm sure my death would affect a girlfriend I had and my children etc (if I have any).

Not everything, Mark. Just your life. Let's not get over dramatic about it.

That's how I feel too but then again I'm not sure I can imagine NOTHING. The thought of never waking up from sleeping scares the shit out of me :(

It's just death. Why dwell on something you've got no control over and is going to happen at some point? Dwell on living.

Considering everything you experience technically is in your head, there is no way of proving that you're not all that exists

Does Heaven/Hell last forever? If there isnt NOTHING after death but everlasting heaven or something, everlasting parties with love, friendship or whatever, wouldnt you get bored with it?! ;) If you evolve/change while you are in "heaven" isnt that like being alive anyway? :?

The problem is when you find out you can't tell anyone. Either because you're dead or because you're in heaven getting blown by 72 virgins (not at the same time obviously).

Getting blown by 72 virgins isn't my idea of heaven. By the time you've explained to all of them HOW to actually 'blow' you, you're dick is already chewed and scarred up and you yourself will no longer be able to get it up from the psychological pain of so much incompetence...
