I can't imagine there being 'nothing' either, I actually think it's impossible simply by the fact that we exist in the first place. Energy doesn't disappear, it gets transferred and used in different forms, and since the vast majority of matter and energy in the universe is simply known as dark matter/dark energy, I wouldn't be surprised if that's extra-dimensional stuff that's out of our scientific reach (how can you examine 10-dimensional matter with 3-dimensional scientific instruments?).
I believe in the soul, and not for Christian reasons (I follow no religion). When DMT studies took place in the early '90s, people kept experiencing things 'more real than real' and would learn incredibly vast amounts of information about the universe and the origin of life from what they thought was 'God', 'Reptilian aliens' and 'Insectoid aliens'. The interesting thing about this is, DMT is thought to be released in a large amount when you die (the pineal gland has all the relevant chemical precursors to do so), which would explain the near-death experiences so many people have talked about (the tunnel, the white light, reliving your enter life in the space of a second, etc.)
Even more bizarre is that in Buddhism, it's believed that the soul enters a new foetus after 49 days of bardo, and this is exactly when the pineal gland is formed and/or releases DMT in a foetus for the first time. The pineal gland is what's known as the 'third eye' in certain religions and spiritualities, and when I tried third-eye meditation a year or two ago it worked very quickly (within 20 minutes) and totally shocked me (I felt immense power flowing through me and as if I was starting to float off my bed) so I snapped out of it and have been kind of too scared to try it again.
Why is there so much order to the universe? Could that have simply come out of chance? Even weird 'coincidental' things make you think, such as why is the Moon the exact size and distance from the Sun so that we can have a total eclipse? Isn't that actually insane? It seems more like there's a direction and intent coming from somewhere (God?) but because all the religions argue with each other and 'God' has been personified and refuted by science, it's become somewhat of a joke for modern society. But basically, I believe that 'God' is an infinite energy that all this has come from, that we are in some kind of matrix (not one that is run by robots like in the film) that lets us experience a 'life' game. 'Us' being all different facets of this energy that can experience things from different angles and have the potential to
learn. In order to learn things, an all-knowing all-being energy must forget itself.
The thought of one day not being able to think, feel, love or do anything really frightens me - if there's NOTHING after death - I can't imagine NOTHING 
What does that look like? You know how you can find out about life before youre born - wouldnt you like to know what happens after your death? 
If you evolve/change while you are in "heaven" isnt that like being alive anyway?
