Re: Kick-Ass - Awesome Superhero Film - Trailer inside...
I dont think its "positive" per se. Nic Cage's friend (the other cop) tells him he's guilty of brainwashing his daughter, training her and dragging her into his quest for revenge against the death of his wife. He was framed and sent to jail, and then HG's/Mindy's mother dies during childbirth or something. But he thinks he's doing the "right" thing, trying to protect his daughter maybe? I think they do have a bond/good relationship though in a weird way and HG seems "happy" but yeah, at first when I saw the scene with the bulletproof vest I was like:
I think you're supposed to react like that.

BR doesnt condone it's violence (IMO) but it was still very controversial. Something the characters from Leon (Matilda), Kick-Ass (Hit-Girl) and BR (Mitsuko), have in common is they all have messed up/disturbed upbringing in some way.
1 or 2 of the girls might have been 15 when the film (BR) was shot.

15 is a long way from 11 when you're that age.
Grim, when you were 11 you were probably playing with he-man toys.

But some girls were still acting in a film that had a higher age limit (in the UK at least) than their real one, I dont think that will ever stop.
IMO I dont think Kick-Ass glamourises violence. Although I found some of HG's scenes like an anime, personally I felt uncomfortable during some other scenes, the point of the film (IMO) is showing that fantasies - when taken to extremes have serious consequences.

It depends on the scene, not the film's rating. I remember being offended by a toddler using an f-word in the boring-ass Jerry Maguire. But some girls were still acting in a film that had a higher age limit (in the UK at least) than their real one, I dont think that will ever stop.

The Turtles were OK I guess, but M.A.S.K. and later G.I. Joe were more my thing.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Just listening to the Kick Ass soundtrack, and at the start of each song they've got a few lines from the film. Some of the lines from HG have had me in stitches again! I think I find it quite comically shocking the language coming from a young girl, but it is still funny regardless of who says it!
"How do I get a hold of you"
"You just contact us through the mayors office. He has this special signal that he shines in the sky. It's in the shape of a giant cock."

That made me laugh
I think you're right about the "comically shocking" thing, also the way she said it was brilliantly sarcastic.

I've seen this film twice and I did not have a problem with the 'C' word. Yes, most people I know would never use the C word but in the film it just works. When I heard that line I was in hysterics!
However I did find the final puch up between Hit-Girl and the Boss quite unsettling. I was not comfortable with a grown man beating up a little girl so visciously.
But overall I loved it

I didn't have a problem with it... this is a girl who had just killed whatever number of men, had killed even more earlier, so what do you expect someone to do against an opponent like that? Be all nice and gentle? Of course not! If the director made it that way then people would be complaining that the bad guy was too easy on her if he subsequently lost, or if he still one, but clearly was going easy, people would complain that it wasn't right, Hit Girl would've kicked his ass... It was played right.

She wasn't evil, it just made me feel uncomfortable watching a larger guy beat a little girl, for all her training, thats all she was.

So say you are a 6'6" guy, and a 5' girl who is a 5th dan in karate, kung fu etc etc starts a fight with you, would you go easy because despite all her training, she's still just a little girl?
If so, you'd get your ass kicked. But at least you'd feel better knowing you didn't go hard on (oo err missus) a little girl...

Depends on the reason for the fight, but I couldn't hit a woman, much less a little girl, thats just wrong and cowardly IMO.
What made it disturbing was the beating was much more "realistic" than the other fights Hit-Girl does. The way she kills, maybe all those people were bad but its like she thinks its a comic. Does that make sense?

I know what Grim is saying. I love the film to bits and would not change anything about the action. I just found the final fight a little uncomfortable to watch. I still watched it though

Re: Kick-Ass - Awesome Superhero Film - Trailer inside...
Well I've finally gotten round to watching this and it's a fun film, although perhaps a little over-rated given the amount of hype it's recieved. Anyway, I can now make my contribution to the debate over Hit-Girl:
Personally I find the whole concept of having kids act in an extremely foul-mouthed or violent manner to be more puerile than anything else, like the child in Role Models it can be funny or shocking at first when a youngster does something extreme, but it soon wears thin. Kick-Ass makes a clear distinction that Hit Girl has been corrupted by her father's obsession with revenge - yes there's clearly a lot of love between them, but no one will come out of the film thinking Big Daddy was a good father.
As for the depiction of a child commiting murder and swearing, etc. When we're talking about a film aimed at adults/late teens and NOT children and the context is established as being fantastical in the extreme, why should there be much of a distinction made between live-action and animation? Is seeing Hit Girl skewer a guy with a bladed staff really all that different to watching a pre-pubescent O-Ren Ishii enact bloody revenge in Kill Bill's anime sequences? Kick-Ass is a comic book film, adapted from a comic book and shot like a comic book.
Any accusations that Chloe Moretz has somehow been corrupted by filming such acts for live-action is absolute bollocks. Ignoring the fact that this isn't the first time she's played a foul-mouthed kid, without a context swear words hold no power at all - she's just reciting words off a page in front of a camera (plus I doubt you'd find many 10yr olds in today's public schools who don't already use such language). Also pretty much all the violence commited by the character is done with CGI so it doesn't look like she was exposed to any extreme violence on set.
Well that fan site is obviously not going to make a balanced argument, but what Vaughan is saying here completely hits the nail on the head, when was the last time you ever saw the screenwriter of a controversial film singled out? It wouldn't be so laughable if it wasn't for the fact that she didn't even write an original script FFS, she adapted the damn thing! The Anti-Ross agenda is clear, and of course it's no surprise that the shit surrounding Goldman was stirred up by the Daily Mail, a knuckle-dragging sensationalist publication written by soulless hacks for idiots with fascist leanings if ever there was one (and I'd be more than happy to post links to back that comment up!).Markgway wrote:Well THAT was a balanced discussion. NOT!

Re: Kick-Ass - Awesome Superhero Film - Trailer inside...
I agree with what you say about anime Shing. If Kick-Ass had been made into an anime IMO there wouldnt be as much fuss. I was reminded of O-Ren in Kill Bill as well. Clearly the context is fantastical and OTT when HG goes up against most opponents.
What other foul characters has Chloe Moretz played? Isnt this her first major role?
I agree also father and daughter and clearly love one another but Big Daddy isnt a good father really, they've both been corrupted.

She's the younger and wiser and slightly more foul-mouthed (although not as bad as hit girl) sister of Joseph Gordon Levitt's character in 500 Days of Summer.
