Can't say I ever noticed new foley... but then I'm not THAT familiar with the film. It was MANY YEARS before the DVD that I last saw the film. Obviously I would like the original track to have been included but the 5.1 remix was well done (if different) and I'm not sure it's worth the "upgrade". The new R2 Ultimate Edition (or whatever its called) doesn't have mono anyways so you would have to import presumably? Compare the remixes on US films to the travesties you get on HK imports(!)

Yeah you'd have import the existing R1 release or that R3HK SE if cd-wow still carries it. NO R2/4 release has the original mono.

The T1 5.1 remix was done by Skywalker Sound, so naturally their effort would be a thousand times better than anything some HK studio could do, unless they had wealth and resources of Skywalker Sound. :P

They still managed to mess it up by adding new foley effects though!

Dude, I know. That's why the copy that I bought has the original mono.

Personally I don't understand why anyone would want the original mono sound but each to their own. I much prefer a 5.1 soundtrack completely remastered giving a complete surround-sound experience much like newer films.

I'm actually quite gutted about this release since I bought the Japanese UE last Christmas especially for the DTS soundtrack at nearly £30 and now I can get it for less than half price on UK region 2 grrrrrrrrrr :x

Its a purist thing. The film was originally made with mono sound & should remain that way.

Fair enough, include a 5.1 remix - I'm all for choice! I started watching the film with the 5.1 remix and was loving it right up until I started to notice the changed foley effects and at that point I just had to sell my R2 version and go for the R1 with the original mix.

Some of us just like to have original material on our DVDs! :)

Has anyone managed to find any reviews for this? I find it most strange I can't find any.

I'd still like to know if the PQ has been remastered or not.

I remember a dude commenting on Thedvdforum that the transfer looked the same as the old R2 transfer to his eyes, for what it's worth.

No original mono, no sale for me. The new sound effects are terrible, and the surround separation has gone overboard.

How does the R1 transger compare to the R2 ?

Thanks but we've had that discussion many times before moving on . . .

I've managed to find a review, it's from the BBC so as usual doesn't tell us much but a review it still is -

The same as far as I can tell. The R1 UE isn't remastered any more.

I've just bought a new copy of this from eBay for £8.01 delivered. He says it's still sealed so it better bloody be new.

Terminator in DTS = Great!

I've found an SE vs. Japanese UE Comparison. Overall I'd probably opt for the SE but really there isn't much in it. Remember this is the Japanese MGM UE so is unlikely to be the same as this new Sony UE.

It's the German SE but I'm sure we can expect it to be the same as the UK R2/R4 SE. It's hard to say in some shots the UE is better but others the SE. Here it is:

http://web12.dvd2web.de/terminator/terminator.htm

A rough German to English translation:

"Against expectations there is a significant difference between the two DVDs. The SE possesses a "untreated" transfer with natural colors, while the UE received a cooler, metallic Look by solid color filter cartridge. In things compression gives it likewise differences: While the SE does similarly as with the Fortune star DVDs from Asia without any noise filters and possesses thus a sharper, in addition, rauschigeres picture with constant more easily artifact formation, the picture of the UE with filters and has thereby was worked over again an easy sharpness-eight-hurries, but however is very calm and low-noise the picture. Artifacts gibt's no more! A good example is here fig. 2, where one can clearly recognize the artifacts in the SE in the picture of the SE."

The thing with mono for me isn't so much that I don't like well done remixes in 5.1 but in this particular case they changed foley effects which is a no no. Besides, there's little to NO reason not to include a mono track spacewise.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

My Terminator: UE arrived yesterday and I've compared it to the UK R2 SE:

* Picture Quality - Virtually the same. If I was picky I'd say the UE was slightly sharper but it's hard to say tbh
* Extras - About the same, a couple of minor new extras
* Subtitles - I read on DVD Forums the new DVD now has proper burnt in captions BUT the Terminator SE doesn't. Bollocks both my DVDs have proper burnt in captions
* Audio Quality - The big one last. The DTS is marginally better than the DD5.1 again it's minute but interestingly it's not exactly the same mix as the one on the SE. The DD5.1 sounds much better on this new UE.

Now for the interesting point: While the DVD doesn't have English Mono in the way you'd think it does have Czech and Polish Mono soundtracks.

The Polish soundtrack is a straight dub and sounds more dynamic than the Czech dub. The Czech dub however is the English mono soundtrack with a split second later Czech dubbing over the top (it would be impossible to watch this way) which makes it useful to compare against the 5.1 remix.

I can't notice any new effects. Where should I look?

Lastly the new cover art is really cool. The rear cover which details the DVD and synopsis is just a piece of paper that falls off when the cellophane is removed leaving just a red picture of Arnie. It really works well.

Overall Terminator UE is a small upgrade from the Terminator SE but it's still an upgrade. I'll be keeping my Terminator UE.

If Terminator UE comes to R1 it's bound to lose the DTS for DD5.1. Making it a less appealing upgrade (considering it will be similar to the SE).

Clearly you watched another film to me.

I specifically compared the Mono on the UE to the 5.1 and they sounded identical. If it did have new foley effects it was VERY well hidden. Any other examples I can check?

Fair point but name me a 5.1 remix you actually like?

I'm sure most get angry not because of the added foley affects but because it's a remix and before they've even listened to it it's been decided it will be rubbish. Forgetting Terminator for a second most recent 5.1 remixes don't have new foley affects but people still bitch about them.

How often do you hear "what a great remix"? Despite the fact many are technically very good. The Terminator remix is considerably better than the cack Tai Chi Master/Fong Sai Yuk.

The point for me and this is important:

1. The film was made on a low budget I'm sure Cameron would've used Stereo if he could've afforded it.
2. The Terminator unlike Once Upon a Time in the West (for example) really lends itself to a 5.1 remix.

Oh my god not this again! Clearly you can't tell the difference between what a silenced gun & a non-silenced gun sound like! :P

There are plenty of foley changes on the remix. Believe me, when I first heard that my favourite film was going to be released with a 5.1 remix I was over the moon, and right from the start the surround experience was great.

But as soon as I heard the first changed foley effect (from memory, its the gunshot when Reese shoots the bolt of the shop door when he's running from the police) I thought what have they done?! I watched a bit more and there were more changes & I had to switch back to mono.

Believe me I wanted to love that remix but I just can't because its changed so much. Its not the remixing of the sound into 5.1 surround that bothers me because that is excellent (especially the HK flying overhead in the first scenes), its the changes to foley effects that annoyed me.

Yep of course but a silencer is well supposed to be silent or at least how it sounds in other films.

Even if I can't it still doesn't change the fact it sounds EXACTLY the same on the Mono as it does the 5.1. I can't talk about any other scene as I didn't know what to look for but I compared the scene when the Terminator shoots the wrong Sarah Conner and that like I said sounds the same.

The same gunfire noises. Incidently there is no way they wouldn't know what she looks like. We keep photographic records of mothers when they give birth silly. Not that it really matter.

HK???

Those mono dubs are probably just downmixes of the DD5.1 remix.

Yeah thats just what I was thinking. Maybe bradavon just isn't familiar enough with the original version of the film to be able to spot the changed foley effects from a mile away like us big fans! :D

I thought that but why go to the effort when the English Mono already exists.

Still you could be right.

I've not heard it for years and as I love the 5.1 I'm not going to risk it by listening to the Mono and then hating the 5.1.

Which I don't think is possible as other DVDs which have both I still prefer the 5.1. I opted for the DD5.1 remix on Breakfast at Tiffany's: SE even though 99% of it is the same. It just adds that little extra.

Anyway fair enough guys I'm happy with the Terminator: UE, you the R1 SE enough said.

Which has been OOP since at least late 2004 (when I tried ordering it and received a single-disc barebones release). I have the R3HK SE which is a clone of the R1 except on two discs instead of one double-sided disc.
