I wonder how much better the PQ will be. I'm some what dubious about that, it was only remastered a few years ago. I don't see any mention of the original (i.e - no new foley effects) Mono soundtrack, so hardly Ultimate.
Two new documentaries is nice though. Even if the release isn't really necessary.
I "may" get it if the PQ is really remastered and the DTS is much better but then again I hear the DTS isn't much different on the JP R2. I see no mention of the audio being remastered.
p.s - No director commentary is a big con as well. T2 has one (on the Extreme edition).

If this DVD does not have the original mono soundtrack I will be very disappointed. I will probably still buy it anyway because this is my all time favourite film and I want to see the new extras.
If Sony really want to make this the "Ultimate Edition", they should include the deleted scenes in a branching version of the film so you can choose which version you want to watch like on the Terminator 2 DVD...

Grim aren't you going to wait to see?
The PQ and SQ could be much better. In the case of Gladiator it's a recent film but Terminator is 20 years old so there is lots of room for improvement.
Now I have a 32" WS HD-Ready LCD TV I'm also beginning a bit more picky about PQ. My Dawson's Creek DVDs (S1 and S2) looked acceptable on my CRT but look really grainy on my LCD. It's much less forgiving to crap transfers. That said they're still watchable.
I'm all for it though as some of the deleted scenes are very good BUT they'd completely mess up T2 as they contain the same ideas or the beginning of the same ideas.

The difference there was Cameron wanted to re-add them.IronMonkey wrote:If Sony really want to make this the "Ultimate Edition", they should include the deleted scenes in a branching version of the film so you can choose which version you want to watch like on the Terminator 2 DVD...

Yeah but surely we should be given the option?
All we have ever had is the theatrical cut of this film. I have seen the deleted scenes on the current MGM R1 release and would like to see them integrated into a branching version of the film so that I am able to choose which version I want to watch.
Branching is one of the best and least-used features of DVD technology. It would be a shame to put yet another release to waste through non-integration of the deleted scenes.
Hopefully one day a company will get the release of my favourite film right and I will be able to watch an extended version...

Do you seriously want the mono soundtrack? The 5.1 is so well done on Terminator. I mean as in a reason to not get this, sure I'd like it but I doubt I'd give it more than a quick listen.grim_tales wrote:Maybe if the PQ is vastly superior/it has the mono track too I'll sidegrade (its not an upgrade)
It really, really improves the film.

Don't get me started on this matter! The 5.1 track would have been absolutely awesome if they hadn't changed music cues and foley effects! That is the reason why we want the mono track - it is the original track! It's just the same as the Ong Bak release from Premier Asia.bradavon wrote:Do you seriously want the mono soundtrack? I for one was very impressed with the 5.1 track on the current edition of The Terminator right up until Reese and the police man scrap and Reese asks what date it is... The gunshot effects are changed there, and I couldn't believe it.
I watched the whole film once with that track but never will again. Original mono is a must for me, unless Sony decide to remix the original track into 5.1 without changing the foley effects.

Didn't he use a silencer originally?
Thanks for that Ironmonkey. I agree it's no different from Ong-bak, it's just for me the 5.1 on Terminator is so good. I've not heard the mono on Terminator for so long now I cannot remember what it sounds like.
I was wondering if you were against 5.1 on Terminator just because it's 5.1 but can see now you're not.

Since the Ultimate Ed due out in Sept probably won't have the original mono, here's a good alternative.
For 5.52 pounds from cd-wow (when using the $2-8USD voucher) you can pick up the R3 Korean 2-disc SE which has the original mono. It's reportedly identical to the old R1 double-sided release (which has since gone OOP and been replaced by a movie only barebones release) except with on 2 discs. I'd snap this up quick, cuz judging from koreandvds.com it's gone OOP.

What a strange way of spreading the extras across both discs, put all the extras on disc 1 with the film and leave the tiny ones to disc 2.
Unless there is something special in the 30 Easter eggs then they'd all easily fit on disc 1. I don't see mention of it going OOP at KoreanDVDs.
MGM may release this on R1 and will probably stick on mono.

If mono is included as you ask then of course it's an upgrade.grim_tales wrote:Maybe if the PQ is vastly superior/it has the mono track too I'll sidegrade (its not an upgrade)

Huh? Do you own the Korean release and that's how it's layed out?bradavon wrote:What a strange way of spreading the extras across both discs, put all the extras on disc 1 with the film and leave the tiny ones to disc 2.

It says it's sold out, that's a good sign that it's OOP when it comes to these Asian DVD e-tailers from my experience.I don't see mention of it going OOP at KoreanDVDs.
Definately, I'd probably won't double-dip T1 and definately not T2 until they're affordable on a hi-def format.grim_tales wrote:MGM may release this on R1 and will probably stick on mono.

Hm... If this has only the new foley effects I'll not be "downgrading"
Remember that Terminator was a really low budget film, and I doubt it will look much better than the R1 release untill we go HD. It was also shot on Super35 (like so many Cameron films) which tend to be rather grainy (especially in low light scenes).
If I remember correctly though the biggest issue, apart from new foley effects, with the previous R2 was the missing burnt in intro text which was replaced by a multilanguage subtitle track.
And what gives...!? DTS on a MONO original soundtrack?! And not a great soundtrack at that... why all this DTS on EVERYTHING! Ack!

I received the R3HK a few days ago. The original English mono is intact and it's the exact same transfer as on my R1 single-disc barebones release. It seems like it's exactly the same as the R1 SE, except on it's 2 discs and not a DVD-14 (I hate double-sided discs), also it's missing the French dub and there's a bunch of Asian subtitle streams (but who gives a fuck). Everything's in 100% English:- the menus, the insert booklet, the sleeve insert, etc. The zillion easter eggs are intact too.
For $9.99USD w/ the $2-8USD coupon from cd-wow, it's a steal. 8)

They've added the new French Ultimate Ed (which is EXACTLY the same as the UK release from what I gather) to the Rewind comparison and it has NO MONO track. So fuck the T1 UE then and MGM can goto hell in this particular case.
