TGTBATU SE - wierd sound?

Post by grim_tales »

Hey,

Yesterday I got the R2 TGTBATU SE, the surround sound (1 speaker still isnt working) isn't bad at all so far - however there are a few times when the dialogue seems to switch from being center focused, as if its coming out of a different speaker??? :?

Eastwood (to Tuco): Way back to town is only 70 miles.

(Strangely echoey): If you save your breath I feel a man like you could manage it.

(Normal): I'll take the money and you can have the rope.

..........................

It happens on a few other occasions too, once in the scene when Lee Van Cleef shoots that guy through a pillow.

I did quite like the use of the surround in some scenes though, like when we first see Eastwood with Tuco and he says "Yeah, but you dont look like the one who'll collect $2000" - and the sound was coming from a speaker behind me.

Yeah, the muppets who did the DD5.1 remix chose to reposition some of voice directions depending on the current on-screen angle. The biggest crime is probably the added/changed foley effects, but I have nothing to compare 'em to since I've only ever seen the 2003 restored 179min cut of GBU on DVD.

I can bear 5.1 remix, it's either this or get the R1 SE and listen to Italian mono or watch the (in comparison) shit old release with the US 161min TC. I don't want to watch to the film in Italian and only own R2 SE (and that's how it will remain until the restored cut is released with a English mono mix and/or a Christopher Frayling commentary instead of the crap Richard Shitkel one.)

I havent heard the Shiekel (sp?) commentary. I have the 4 discer of Fistful of Dollars/Few Dollars More on order which has the Frayling commentary.

For some reason I expected Frayling to be older, but I saw him on a recent C4 show and he was a youngish guy with a beard. Maybe I thought he was older as he was a Sir :D

It's Shit-kel - cuz his commentaries suck. The forum server seems to be done for me at the mo, but I started a thread on thedvdforums.com about WHY I think he sucks. Just do a search on that forum for "Richard Schickel".

He also looks almost exactly like Sir Robert Winston, that guy on all the BBC docos like The Human Body, Child of Our Time, etc.

Robert Winston reminds me of Groucho Marx with that funny moustache :D

I know you think his commentary sucks ;) I was asking how to spell his real name ;)

Anyone know why TGTBATU is an 18? :? Its' violent but is it really any more violent then the other 2 Dollars films? :?
The BBFC only says it contains some "mild" language and "moderate" violence (!) :D

The Good the bad and the ugly, LD. :D
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Oh man, ok... now I got it, lol!!!

Awesome movie. Although I'm aware of the English title of the film, it has a different title in Germany which is always on my mind...

It doesnt really matter Eva, its just given the BBFC consumer advice (mild language and moderate violence) an 18 seems harsh. Perhaps it should be a 15 to tie in with the other Dollars movies.
LD what is it in German? :)

It's "Zwei glorreiche Halunken" which translates to "Two glorious Scoundrels".

Hmm.. interesting. Which 2 is it referring to? ;)

I'm confused about how TGTBATU was restored. It looks amazing, far better than the old R1 (which looks OK despite not being restored). Did MGM restore the US Int'l cut (as the title cards - The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) are in English, then "re-insert" and re-dub the scenes from the Italian print back in?? :? Or start off with the Italian print and put the English track on it?

Ow man, I'm getting so confused with all the GBU releases. Is the one Grim mentions, the 2005 german SE? Or the 2-disc version of GBU that's on play.com? http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=srmr ... tle=150573

So far, I only have the Once upon a Time in the West dvd (so none of the dollards trilogy yet) and I absolutely loved that movie. I've seen 2 or 3 of the dollars trilogy before on tv, and alo loved those, but since I've heard about the remix-problems, plus the absence of the original mono etc. I decided to not yet buy those movies...

Do the new German releases solve the initial problems that the ones at play.com have? Are they uncut or are they extended even?

Why cant they get releases right the first time :( -sigh-

For TGTBATU, I'm talking about the SE on Play.com :)
The German SE's solve the problems of the UK MGM SEs as the mono tracks are intact and theyre uncut (I think?)

Thanks... and are these the uncut versions as theyw ere originally released in theatres, or do you mean they are the 'extended' versions as theyw ere released on DVD (the play.com ones?)

Where can I order these german releases, and are there any things/problems with these german releases that I should know about!?

Yi you can order them here:

http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B ... 66-5029304

Footage wise I think theyre the same as the MGM SE's (?) Not sure... :? However they have new HD transfers as well as being remastered, all the extras from the MGM discs plus English mono.

Thanks man, might pick that up.
Asked about this on a dutch forum if anyone knows if we can expect dutch releases of these versions ... or perhaps even better, UK/Australian releases...
(I prefer english/australian releases over Dutch releases, cause with dutch releases they put a lot of anti-copy crap commercials in front...)

They have the forced warnings on UK releases too though! ;) At the end of TGBATU SE you have to sit through 3-4 chuffing minutes of warnings in about 12 languages :? :D

This is most likely what happened, from the looks of it.

The incoming German releases of AFOD/FAFDM SEs from Paramount are German exclusives. IParamount own the German rights AFOD/FAFDM only. MGM still hold the German rights to GBU and Fistful of Dynamite, so the their releases are identical to every other R2 release from MGM (of course the daft 6secs of "horse falls" cuts incurred in the UK release are not present in every other R2 European release.)

It's not just after the film, the assault of multilanguage copyright messages happen after every featurette/extra too.
