Hi Ricochan,
Zoke have released a 4 disc set that is the equivalent to their excellent 2 disc DVD9 sets for both movies in one package with some playing cards as a bonus.
The Blu Ray quality of these two films is incredible, sucks that the watermark is on part 1 though, you'd hope they'd put out a re-release but thats never going to happen.
Amazing films also, great to see Woo return to form while taking on something more ambitious in scale and grandeur than he's ever done before. Whilst The Killer and HardBoiled for me as his ultimate films, I think they are just too different to compare with Red Cliff which feels like the natural growth for him as a filmmaker.
The trailer for the International version was played last night. It's out in the 12th of June in The UK. I'm going to see it on the big screen then decide whether to get the BDs.
Those who have Part 1, would you say the watermark is so annoying that the DVD is better or because the BD is so good quality, you can put up with it? How often does it appear? Thanks.
I'll be honest - the first two times the watermark appears it is annoying and a bit distracting but after a while you adjust and just get used to it. I think it appears on a black bar so if it really is something that you can't get past you could potentially just pop something on the top corner of your tv to hang over the watermark area.
One thing I would say though is, if you can get hold of the film in two parts before the UK cinema release I'd suggest to watch it as intended in 2 parts first. There's so much in terms of character and some absolutely beautiful scenes that I worry that trimming it down into 1 x 140mins film is going to take away an awful lot that makes Red Cliff such an entertaining experience.
Obviously I cant say for certain until after I've seen the shorter cut but watching the original version I could see a few scenes that would be ok to lose but not 100+ mins worth of scenes.
What's far more annoying than the actual watermark itself is that all these review sites and forums go on and on about how distracting it is, but no one bothers to post screenshots of the damn thing! It appears in the black border so it's not much more distracting than random player-generated subtitles appearing every few minutes.
At the end of the day the HK BD is the best release of Red Cliff in its OAR, if there were an alternative I'd say great go get it, but there isn't and it's looking more likely that there may never will be. Owning a BD with a good 1080p presentation that has a bleedin logo appear inside the borders around 5 times during the film is FAR more appealing that owning a dodgy pirate copy!
So, is there actually a decent release of both movies on DVD available in the first place?
With "decent" I mean: Uncut, Original Aspect Ratio, readable Subs, no Watermark.
Thanks.

The watermark on BD Part 1 isn't on the DVD.

Is it only 5 times? I didn't realise that, thanks.
ps. - Thanks ghevans too. I'm going to check it out at the cinema (hmm. big screen!) first.
Thanks.
Since Blu-Ray hasn't become relevant for me (yet), I'll go for the DVD-Releases, then.
Talk about huge expectations; you'll better not fuck this up, John!
I saw the cinema advert for this on TV (a TV spot) today, it looks really good
Should I see the full version (both parts) first or the UK version? I bet it won't play in my local cinema though.
