I really liked Face/Off when I was a teenager, but when I watched it again a few years down the line, I was like 'oh dear...'.

I saw Face/Off in the cinema and once when it came out on DVD and not seen it since. I always considered it to have an intensely stupid script but fun action and performances. Hard Target I watched when it first came out during a period when I was quite the fan of JCVD and I absolutely hated it. I rewatched it again years later as an adult and enjoyed it a lot more. I wonder if I would find Face/Off quite so enjoyable nowadays though!

You should know by now, you're the geek not I ;). I've not got a scooby doo who he is, some "Bruce Campbell fanboy's cult wet dream" I'm guessing.
Heh, I just wanted to see your reply.

Enzo G Castellari is the director of the original Inglorious Bastards. And many other great films like The New Barbarians.

And Total Recall rocks too!
Yes, finally some love.

Didn't care much for Total Recall either. I liked the story and the premise, but I didnt like the casting nor the directing. It looked cheap, amateuristic, and I felt it could have been done much more mature and better.
The story is good, the excecution isn't.

Well if it was a Big V film, you would at least see the gunshot to the face.

It is, almost. Maybe a bit too over the top with its satire and parody (loses a little bit of its edge) but it's a lot of fun.

But Masterpiece? If you honestly think it's a masterpiece I have my doubts you know what the word actually means :). It gets overused so often.

Full Metal Jacket - 3.75/5:
Fantastic first half during the boot camp, weak second half when they get to Vietnam. It didn't feel like any Vietnam that I've seen in other films before. It did look like the abandoned industrial sector of a Western city (South London was where it was shot, I think. Fucking Kubrick should've gone to Thailand like everyone else.).

Inland Empire - 2/5:

It was quite shit, TBH. I didn't enjoy it much at all, unlike Mulholland Dr, Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart - which are all excellent. Weird for sake of being weird.

Oh and I've heard the "trapped in a nightmare" argument before, I was just too bored out my skull watching this unfun long arse film to care.

The Hills Have Eyes (Craven original): 1/5
It's very shit, why does this film have a following? It's like it wants to be Texas Chainsaw Massacre but comes across as too campy with the bad make-up and over-the-top performances. Craven should've hired Tom Savini.

TCM has this utterly gritty documentary feel and a sense of tension that lingers throughout the film. Eg the scene where they find all of the slaughter house equipment, very eerie. The Hitchhiker at scene the start is totally unsettling and shocking, brilliant stuff. The 2003 remake on the hand is utterly soulless and feels like it was made in a factory, you guys are off your rocker for liking it, TBH.

I don't know what happened to Tobe Hopper, did he have a lobotomy after making this film or something? Poltergeist feels too much like Spielberg film and nothing like Hopper's style. Now Poltergeist is really overrated too.
More laughably cheesy rather than scary.

I saw Lifeforce a few months back on the MGM Channel, that was a lot of stupid fun, the plot was utterly ludicrous, but so much fun.
Seeing Patrick Stewart acting mental and making out with Steve Railsback is golden stuff. Oh and fuck, Matilda May was utterly smoking hot, spending most of the film totally naked.

Gremlins: 3.5/5

I liked the self-aware sequel that takes the piss out of its self a lot more than the original, TBH.

But oh man, was Phoebe Cates was really hot back then.

Rocky - 3/5
Utterly criminal how Taxi Driver lost to this film. It's utterly sentimental tripe, but it has this emotional honesty that stops me from hating it; although that's more likely just down to low budget and raw, deeply personal, documentary style that most of the great American films had in that era.

The direction and Stallone's tender, passionate performance saved it from the written tripe, now that I think about it.

The sequels are pretty shit on paper, but impossible to hate for entirely different reasons than Rocky I (Except Rocky V, which is just total shit.). Eg Rocky IV is pretty much Rambo II in a boxing ring and it is fucking awesome.

Was Inland Empire ever hyped? It was loathed by all. I've not yet checked out my DVD.

I like Gremlins and Gremlins 2 but I doubt they've aged well.

My own personal excitement, being a big fan of Lynch. I went in with very high expectations.

Fanboys also blindly love it. I'm not one of them because I'd happily admit to not liking/enjoying something.

Total Recall's fun and from a great era of action film, but it's not on the level of Robocop - not even as good as Starship Troopers.

Still very watchable of course. :)

And can Mark and Brad get a room - they make me not want to log in these days :?

Roger Ebert gave it 4/4: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbc ... 50301/1023

I personally like the film, it was one of my best cinema experiences ever, and on subsequent DVD viewings I still think it's very good.

Forrest Gump is great IMO, very good film. A Beautiful Mind is also good but not much re-watch value.

Ransom, Apollo 13, Cocoon and Splash are also good but IMO Forrest Gump is his only great film. I've not seen Missing though. Howard does that annoying thing Speilberg does and thinks sentimentality is a clever thing to put in movies.
