Knockabout was supposed to be from the first subtitled batch. I don't recall anyone at the ADVDG talking about dubtitles.

Guardian critic, John Patterson, recently named John Woo’s classic bloodshed thriller, A Better Tomorrow, as one of the 10 films that have laid the foundations for modern movie-making.

Woo’s seminal classic which stars action-icon Chow Yun-fat and the late, great Leslie Cheung is credited with forever changing the creative direction of the American action movie. The second and third instalments from the classic trilogy are coming soon from Hong Kong Legends.

Hong Kong Stars returning home?

After rising to the top of the film-industry food chain in Hong Kong, John Woo, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow Yun-fat all left home to make their fortunes in Hollywood. Each one has been prolific in their own way and contributed significantly to world box-office turnover with high-flying projects such as Face-Off, Mission Impossible 2, Rush Hour 1& 2, Hero, Cradle to the Grave and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Despite their success, each of these top stars is now returning home to work on film projects that derive inspiration from their cultural heritage.

Woo is scheduled to begin filming "Battle of Red Cliff," a joint Chinese-U.S. production about a famed Chinese battle. Li's upcoming movie "Fearless" tells the story of Chinese kung fu master Huo Yuanjia, Chow is slated to appear in the upcoming Ann Hui film "My Aunt's Postmodern Life" and Chan is currently promoting his new Hong Kong feature, “The Myth”, whilst preparing to collaborate with celebrated Chinese director, Zhang Yimou. Chan said he's well-paid, but essentially artistically unfulfilled in Hollywood. "I make a lot of money in the U.S., but I can't make films I like," he said during a recent interview with The Associated Press.

How does ACHG IVL compare with the HKL anyone?

From the PA DVDs I've seen... their cover art is usually good, but with standard packaging and menus which are pretty average really. They seem good but not great.

Is packaging and menus all that interest you? The AV on PA DVDs (Bichunmoo and Musa anyway) is first rate.

Personally I think the menus are very good.

I recall someone saying that the IVL subs are atrocious and that the mono is a 5.1 downmix with new foley; so better off with the HKL then. That's a second-hand opinion mind.

I have the HKL. I won't be using the mono more than sampling it and haven't seen the film before so wouldn't notice the new foley effects (bar the obvious ones).

I'll watch it and if I like it I'll probably get the box set to watch the sequels. That said the subs are worrying.

It only comes with LEGEND OF THE DRAGON and probably has very limited extras.

Isn't that any good?

Cool, an HKL release of ABT2. I'll get it when it's 8.99 pounds or cheaper on cd-wow. The subs on the IVL trilogy set are adequate, but could definitely use a new set from HKL.

Did anyone here like ABT3? I thought it was blah. It had uninteresting characters, love triangle and story; the pacing of a dog; and a mediocre attempt at emulating Woo's action style. One can appreciate Tsui Hark's personal commentary on the Vietnam war and Tiananmen Square, but Woo's BITH shits from great heights onto it in terms of emotional effect, story and of course action sequences.

HKL should do a Platinum Ed of The Killer, using the FS print + original mono.

I liked it as a drama, but I don't regard it as an action movie.
I did enjoy the interaction between Chow Yun-Fat, Leung Kar-Fai, Shek Kin and Anita Mui.

A remastered extended cut on disc 2 would be lovely. Not that that would happen, partly because it would probably mean having to leave the burnt in English/Chinese subs.

Nope Mark was purely saying he preferred KOB and as I've not seen either I have a 50/50 answer to which is better (I'm a Stephen Chow virgin

).

But still that hasn't answered if Mark liked LOTD. I'd opt for the IVL as it's from a FS print. That said so could HKL; I'll wait.

Huh??? Is this German translated thru Babelfish as I have no idea what you're talking about!! All I was saying is that I took the opposite view and preferred King of Beggars so Bradavon now has two opinions to choose from. I thought Legend of the Dragon was OK, but not a keeper. Chow's films are very subjective though, and what makes one geezer laugh might not another. If you haven't seen either the IVL Box is a reasonable idea.
