It is unusual, but it's probably because an original dub was never recorded and Celestial just recorded a new one in 5.1 mix.bradavon wrote:Thanks Lee. Interesting "Come Drink with me" has Mandarin Mono or English DD5.1.

They do? I always assumed they just used the Celestial / Fortune Star 5.1 mixes with their releasesbradavon wrote:So you reckon DD did no work to the audio themselves? Normally they create new 5.1 mixes in both languages.
It's alright. Heroes of the East is amazing.bradavon wrote: I'll be picking up "Come Drink with Me". I hear it's good.

Are all their releases from Celestial or Fortune Star? I thought they created their own 5.1 mixes (like they did at HKL), maybe not.HungFist wrote:They do? I always assumed they just used the Celestial / Fortune Star 5.1 mixes with their releases
I don't have much interest in Heroes of the East. I'm generally not interested in Old School Martial Arts (except Bruce Lee) but figure I should give a Shaw Brothers film a go.

Na, they're not allowed to AFAIK.bradavon wrote:So you reckon DD did no work to the audio themselves? Normally they create new 5.1 mixes in both languages.
Unless telecined themselves, they probably don't do any audio remixing. That stuff comes from Fortune Star and the likes
'HOTE' has a few trashy bits in the first half (LKL's cameo is kinda cool, but it's a boring fight), but I still like the movie.

You might still get something out of Heroes as it's an incredible showcase for Liu Chia Hui. In the film (very minor spoiler ahead) he must face several japanese fighters, and learn a new fighting style every time he meets a new opponent. It's amazing how one guy can be so specialize in all those different styles. Among the styles is Drunken Boxing, with the director Liu Chia Liang playing the Drunken Master.bradavon wrote:Are all their releases from Celestial or Fortune Star? (still slight spoilers) The film is also partly a family drama... although not quite like anything you've seen before. You can pretty much guess the outcome when the husband is a nationalistic chinese kung fu master, and the wife very pround of her japanese ninjitsu art

Well they're almost certainly given remixed audio masters from Celestial, so it's not like you can do much with that, yes you could remix it from 5.1 to mono but you'd still be left with the crappy foley effects (if they've been added), which is the real problem people have with Celestial's remasters.

How many times have you said that on this thread nowbradavon wrote: I'll be picking up "Come Drink with Me". I hear it's good.
CDWM is far from even in the top 50 Shaw films, for anything, plot, fighting or acting, still no idea why it gets so much prase at all apart from doing what it does well (it is good dont get me wrong) and being a "Classic", it never blows the screen away like the best Shaws.
Heroes of the East pisses all over it from 100 miles above

All the Shaws are original mono (no 5.1) with exception to OAS English being a 5.1 downgrade.Celestial titles: Original Mono/Stereo - English 5.1
Anything not supplied by Celestial/FS must have their approval.Do DD only source their material from Fortune Star or Celestial?

I guess you could say the same about Drunken Master in it's genre. Your taste in films is very different from mine though.
If I remember correctly HKL had deals with Media Asia and later Fortune Star. I guess in theory DD could do something similar. I ask as I don't recall Seven Swords or Tom Yumg Goong coming from those two companies. Thanks for the info about the audio spec.chenlung wrote:Anything not supplied by Celestial/FS must have their approval.

If you're an idiot, yes.bradavon wrote: I guess you could say the same about Drunken Master in it's genre.
In the beginning HKL bought Media Asia licences because MA was the right holder. But then, unless I'm totally mistaken, Fortune Star bought the Media Asia library. So, naturally HKL had to switch to FS.bradavon wrote:I remember correctly HKL had deals with Media Asia and later Fortune Star. Well, all contracts are different I suppose. I think the STAR TV catalogue was transferred from Media Asia to Fortune Star in 2003 perhaps.I remember correctly HKL had deals with Media Asia and later Fortune Star. I guess in theory DD could do something similar.
Any titles that are released now with a Media Asia logo is because the deal occurred when they had the films
I meant any Celestial/FS acquired titles with 3rd party sources etc that didn't belong to them must have approvalI ask as I don't recall Seven Swords or Tom Yumg Goong coming from those two countries. Thanks for the info about the audio spec.

Thanks Chen.
HKL did release City on Fire using the Media Asia print not Fortune Star print.
That was a little strong. DM is considered one of the best in it's genre, yet not everone feels the same way. I think it's one of most boring films ever made.HungFist wrote:If you're an idiot, yes.

I am talking abot the tonnes of other films you said you would be picking up, and never did at all.bradavon wrote:It's never been available in a decent form beforeromerojpg wrote:How many times have you said that on this thread nowyou must own tonnes by now
If you picked up all the films you say would wil, you would have 100000 dvds.
Who gives a fuck? I couldnt care less how self important a film is.grim_tales wrote:Romero, CDWM is an important film in HK cinema.
I watch a film, not a self important genre classic pushed on sheep who think a classic must be seen.

Yeah, but only a little.bradavon wrote:That was a little strong.HungFist wrote:If you're an idiot, yes.
As Chen already explained, a lot of deals were made back in MA days, although some of the dvds only got released years later.bradavon wrote: HKL did release City on Fire using the Media Asia print not Fortune Star print.

Come Drink With Me is probably the weakest King Hu film I've seen. But that still makes it bloody brilliant!
I do think though, that Come Drink With Me gets praises for being the first of its kind that really deserve to go to the previous year's Temple of the Red Lotus, which launched Shaw's sucessful run of wu xia pictures and introduced the world to Jimmy Wang Yu and Lo Lieh
