AWOL?

Love the film by the way. Watched it again last week and it didn't lose any of its charme.

AWOL = Absent Without Leave

And yeah, I am also interested in the movie, but only in the uncut version. I checked yesasia for it this weekend, but they only seem to have the HK version, which is also the int. cut I believe.

The HK DVD is also the International Cut. Only the Korean DVD is uncut (I think):

Hmm... is the Korean disc sold out? I bought it when it was released. Didn't expect it to be sold out that soon.

Has anyone seen both cuts?

Longer doesn't always equal better.

Exactly. Often it does but not always. I recommend you watch it and see if you think it should've been longer/felt edited.

I still say Musa International Cut is a better cut. It would've been better if someone involved at picked what got the chop but the Director's Cut is too long and it's pace is affected. In it's shorter form (which is still over 2 hours) it's excellent. Only one of the deleted scenes on the HKL DVD is worth anything.

How about: Holy Sh*t! Play have updated their webpage! ;- )

Might say something usefull as well; I watched HKL's The Odd Couple today and some of the sound effects in the "rescue fight" didn't sound so 70s... although I can't be sure about that. The rest of the movie sounded great, though, and the transfer was very nice as well (zero edge enhancement). Good disc.

OMG I thought Tom was joking:

http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk/

I cannot believe they're gradually killing off such a strong brand, you guys may have not liked all their releases but I cannot a brand anywhere as strong replacing them any time soon.

I wonder if sales were poor?

p.s - Thread title changed :D

wtf, didn't we discuss this already? Or was it just the all the other forums? HKL closing down was huge news about two weeks ago. Every asian cinema forum has 4 page thread on it.

I don't remember it being discussed :(

Even Premier Asia's website is closed. I guess their last release really will be the Thai horror flick Shutter, which only recently got released.

What forums has it been discussed on properly?

Yeah, that's why I sold the disc and got a custom DVD-R. Ironically, on the English track (which is a new dub) the sound effects are the originals. What a screw-up of an otherwise first rate disc

It seems to me that HKL have managed to screw up in one way or another most of the titles they have released.

Off the top of my head:

Ninja in the Dragon's den, Mr Vampire, Black Sheep Affair: dubtitles.
Police Story, Crime Story, Project A 1 & 2, Eastern Condors, Magnificent Butcher, OUATIC 3, Postman fights back, Prodigal Son: Stretching.
Scorpion King, Chinese Ghost Story, Legend of a Fighter, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, Magnificent Warriors, Zu Warriors: Cropping.
Police Story, Yes Madam, Odd Couple, Full Contact, Iron Monkey, OUATIC 2, New Dragon Gate Inn, (possibly) Warriors Two: Screwed-up sound.
Millionnaire's Express, Dragons Forever, Police Story, Wheels on Meals, Heart of Dragon: Pinkifying.
Hitman, Iron Fisted Monk, Postman Fights Back: Obvious print damage.

Have they ever released a film without screwing it up ? Of course.
Miracles, Moon Warriors, Duel to the Death, Swordsman, 2000 AD and a few others.

But still...
I think we're better off without them.

Now, yes. I don't think they would've done much good for films in their current (uhm, before current) state. But before, I think they did a lot of good job. Like you said, most of their releases feature flaws. But most other releases of those films feature even bigger flaws. I think they managed to save quite a many films before Fortune Star took away all the hope of a better tomorrow.

And likewise I say HKL have managed to give us great releases on the majority of titles they've managed to release.

Really? I do understand your point honestly I do but the reality is that their replacement (or prior to HKL's existence) will likely be worse, and you still say we're better off without them?

Don't you think just maybe you guys are too picky? HKL may not have got things perfect but they did go some way to at least trying.

Would you honestly prefer HKL and their ilk didn't exist and we were still stuck with the DVDs from the likes of Universe and Megastar (who they used to release DVDs)?
HungFist wrote:But most other releases of those films feature even bigger flaws.
EXACTLY!

OUATIC3 didn't look stretched to me, not at all. The sound on OUATIC2 is fine. Yep definitely too picky :D

The only release I've owned (of some 20 odd titles) that I had a minor problem with was the grain on OUATIC but that's really not a big deal. Sure their Police Story wasn't great but it wasn't half bad either.

You're blaming HKL for print damage?

I have no issue with print dammage.

OUATICIII is defeintly stretched. There's a comparison somewhere online

Agree Swordsman is a first class DVD
