No wonder the DVDs are shoddy - child labour!

The Prodigal Son HKL was quite heavily cropped for an OAR presentation if I remember correctly.

Yes, it's about 2.25:1 squished down to 2.35:1.

I'd love to see what you guys consider minor cropping :D

1.78:1 to 2.35:1 is heavily cropped but so is 2.25:1 to 2.35:1. O-Kay 8)

I'd consider the cropping on Prodigal Son minor enough not to be a major concern, but the squishing is annoying

You often get minor cropping on films, but this one in particular was quite a lot, whilst still retaining its OAR.

I've been impressed with most of the 25 or so HKL DVDs I've ever bought. Then again I'm not so fussy as most.

I didn't even mind too much OUATIC's grain. It was still very watchable.

I have no issue with grain on a transfer. Frequently it's intentional or a age related issue. I'd rather have grain that a processed and filtered image

I've been impressed with many an HKL DVD I have too - but like Brad I'm not that fussy. LoAF was messed up but thats probably the rarest film they've ever released so I guess I should be happy it was released at all? :?
Police Story 2 wasnt very good in my opinion (the HKL DVD).

Quite a few HKL DVDs are above average. I'm not that fussy either, it's just I have basic principles like OAR and language.

I can't understand why HKL released certain titles with squashed/stretched images. It ruined Police Story and I think The Magnificent Butcher was another one but don't quote me on that. You'd have thought that after all the effort they put into remastering the prints, that they would put them onto a DVD in the correct shape :?

I'd rather have grain than no grain, no matter if it's intentional or not...

Magnificent Butcher appears to be an error. They squeezed the sides in so that the credts would fit on a tv monitor but didn't revert it back for the film so people's heads look too tall. Ironically, I find this much more irritating then the likes of Prodigal Son and Police Story

I don't think that's ironic at all, of course it's going to be much more offputting seeing everyone stretched, than having some picture cropped off the sides lol

What I meant is Proigal SOn and Police Story are stretched horizontally, whilst MB is strecthed vertically

I just picked up Premier Asia's 2-disc set of CRYING FIST on spec (I got it dirt cheap) only to find that the running time of the Korean disc is 17 mins longer. Aarrrgghhh. Don't tell me this is another one of those hatchet jobs. This release will be PAL but that's still roughly 12 mins AWOL. I don't supose the PA cut is superior by some remote chance...? :?

The PA DVD is the international version, pinked and stretched.

Didn't like the film...
