I know Mandarin is the original language, but which version out of the readily available ones, do you prefer?

I first saw the English dub on VHS in the 90's by Polygram Video - that was probably cut (not sure). I liked the funky music on the original English dub

According to Bey Logan the 1971 Mandarin track doesnt have Bruce Lee's war cries on it.

One thing I'd like to see on "Fist of Fury: PE" is some original UK trailers for Bruce Lee films - I saw the UK trailer for BOSS (plus some uncut FIST footage) on a VHS called "Bruce Lee Uncut" or something like that in 1998 and I was blown away The UK trailer is like the Mandarin one with captions saying "He is peerless throughout America and Asia" and stuff. 8)

Also I've noticed that the HK trailer from the 80's uses music from other Bruce films (the first few secs of trailer are like the Game of Death opening). It uses music from the Way of the Dragon UK trailer also.

Until a Mandarin Mono version becomes available (awaits with baited breath...) I would watch the US-English dub of The Big Boss (yes, the one with the funky music!) The Cantonese track sucks ass.

The US-English dub is the 1971 dub right?
I noticed in the scene in the lake (when he's walking with Maria Yi and she's saying "Brother Ah Quin is a good man, dont be mad" etc) Bruce has a really deep Shaw Bros a-like voice on that dub, then it changes again. The deep voice is from the first dub, I'm sure.

Was there ever a Mandarin mono track made in 1971 for the shorter version? Surely there's more chance of hell freezing over then the longer version being available.

I take it which DVD or Video we prefer?

For me it has to be the HKL DVD but then again I've never seen the HK DVDs and have no interest in seeing them. I've not seen the FS remaster but I'd like to.

If they're only in the Cantonese soundtrack then by default I want the Cantonese soundtrack.

We may see those but with all the trailers already released on the BL HKL DVDs to date I doubt it.

The Cantonese dub has a differnet score which varies from the awesome - Pink Floyd's Time - to the OK to the godamn awful - that chimey music that plays whenever Bruce looks at his medallion.

Peter Thomas's score for the US version is sheer lunacy - and undeniably cool!

So on the HKL version, the war cries that Bruce makes, are they taken from other sources? (i.e. other films?).

On the Cantonese track, yes, since it was done in the early 80s

the big boss is an awesome movie,probably considered by most fans the lesser film of his 4 completed movies but i love it ! the build up to his first burst of action is done superbly well imo and the locations are great. bruce going to the boss's house at the end coolly munching on his crackers or whatever great. ! off topic but i've just watched an old jimmy wang yu movie 7 magnificent fights (aka seaman no 7) and it features a lot of big boss alumni- han ying cheih, james tien,maria yi ,lee quin a few others as well.was it filmed at the same time?

Brad, we've seen the HK trailers but we've never seen the original UK cinema trailers before on DVD (apart from WOTD). I'm sure they exsist somewhere.

No. That was done circa 1974.

Not in 1971. But it was done later when the cuts were made for re-issue. That's why there's no excuse for any company worth its salt not including it.

There wasn't supposed to be any. That was something the engineers added for the Cantonese track after Bruce's war cries became a defining characteristic in subsequent films.

It was released a couple of years later... but all these people were favourites of director Lo Wei who often used the same people in his films, even when he was at Shaws. So it's not too surprising. It could have been shot a while before it's release? But I'm not sure that's much of a factor. I think the repeated cast is down to Lo's preference more than anything else...

I thought there were 2 1971 dubs Mark, perhaps the one I had on VHS was the '74 dub then.

No, one dub was from 1971 and that had the original Shaw-style voices; the film was redubbed for the American market when it was released there in 1974, because the distributors didn't think the original was good enough. It's this second dub that's always been on VHS in the US and UK.

To use your argument. "My" enjoyment of the film comes even before the director's vision.

It wasn't that bad - I liked some of the music in it. Well OK, the locket music was awful as was the dubbing of Bruce's yells. You know - it was pretty bad now I think of it!

IMO no matter how messed up it is to compare it to the truly woeful English dub which uses a language not even from the same continent (I'd prefer a Thai dub to an English, or French dub) is well strange.

Fair enough though.

I quite like that English dub. It's got a funky grindhouse feel to it
