Magnificent Butcher question

Who does Yuen Biao play?

In Bey Logan's essay "The Real Lam Sai Wing" it mentions him as Foon, but surely that means the 1991 Once Upon A Time In China movie with Jet Li.
Feng Ke-An (Master Ko's son) = Fung Hark On right? Its' just he's called Feng Ke-An in the HK trailer.
Also you know the part at the start of the trailer where it says "Yuen who helped to make Jackie a star" - I think that could either be Yuen Sui Tien (who starred in SITES and DM with him), or Yuen Woo Ping (who directed SITES/DM).
On the other hand the trailer shows Fan Mei Sheng in the drunken beggar role, so when it says "Yuen who made Jackie a star" it could be YWP.
Having just watched the HKL, the transfer is not that great in places, with some nasty flickering at times..

Great film though.

Who does Yuen Biao play?
I think he plays Kai.
Wei Pai (also known as Wei Ba) plays Leung Foon.
Feng Ke-An (Master Ko's son) = Fung Hark On right?
Yep.
Feng Ke-An = Mandarin (I think).
Fung Hark-On = Cantonese.
"Yuen who helped to make Jackie a star"
They mean Yuen Woo-Ping, of course (the director).
Having just watched the HKL, the transfer is not that great in places
What about the vertical stretching ?
That's even worse than the squishing in Police Story and Project A 2.

It's not unheard of for an actor to play the same role in more than one movie. Look at Kwan Tak Hing!! In semi-sequel 'Dreadnaught', however, Leung Foon is played by Leung Kar Yan, whilst Yuen Biao takes the role of "Mousy" (I don't know if every set of subs translates that the same way). And as Tom says, Feng Ke An is the Mandarin version of Fung Hark On. Interesting they would use his Mandarin name on a Cantonese film though... I guess that's not too unusual if you think about it.

How come? By that time it had been fairly recent since the language of film became Cantonese..
Also they write Yuen Biao's name as Yuen Piao, or something like that - and say he plays a character "Punter" (?)

Yuan Piao is the Mandarin version.
Yuen Biu is the Cantonese version.
Yuen Biao is actually an odd mix between the two.

They must of used the Mandarin names (except for Sammo) on the trailer. Wierd..

And the trailer calls Yuen Biao's character "Punter" Eh? Who is he playing? I think Wei Pei is supposed to be Leung Foon, who Biao played in OUATIC.
The HKL is stretched a bit and parts of the caligrahpy fight suffer from severe emulsion flicker - I belive this was not present on the FOX DVD. Still it's got a good commentary, interesting extras and one of the better English dubs. I hope the upcoming IVL has the mono track. Otherwise, it's France for me - again

Thats what I meant about the flickering as well - that was very distracting.
Whats good about the French DVD?
I found 2 easter eggs - one is a set of behind the scenes photos, the other one is an essay about the real Lam Sai Wing by Bey.
According to IMDB, Biao plays "Chai" (?) Then again it credits Yuen Siu Tien among the cast (when he obviously isnt in the film as it is now) so go figure.

Whats good about the French DVD?
Better picture than HKL disc (not stretched).
Better subs than FOX disc (not dubtitles).
Better sound than FOX and HKL (Cantonese Mono).
Downside:
In France, Magnificent Butcher is only available in the Wong Fei-Hung boxset, along with Drunken Master and Dreadnaught.

I've checked the french dvd (in which the chinese sentences in the original trailer are subtitled) and:
Hung & Yuen = Sammo Hung and Yuen Woo-Ping.
Wei Pai as Leung Kun = Wei Pai is Leung Foon (Yay I was right !

).
Yuen Piao as Punter = Yuen Biao is Clubfoot Seven (OK I was wrong about THAT one

).

maybe in the trailer but what about in the movie

by tom2681
Dis donc Gam-Kong, tu me cherches ou quoi ?!
I don't think they are referred to by name in the film.
So it doesn't matter.
I wonder how Grim feels about this thread (He's surrounded by frenchmen).

If I remember the HKL subs - OK, they're hardly the most accurate of people! - Wong Fei-hung calls them "Foon and Chaat" at the end of the film
Posted: 31 Jul 2005, 00:19
by tom2681
Actually:
Wong Fei-Hung sees Master Kao lying on the ground.
He turns to Yuen Biao and says:
"-Chat, help him up".
Chat = Seven = Clubfoot Seven.
@Chow Gam Kong:
Now you can update the cast list on your site.
'told you I was right

I've got no probs with the HKL DVD's sound - though I can understand French I'm not used to watching whole films with French subtitles
Clubfoot 7 is in OUATIC3 right? (Not in 1 or 2).
Posted: 31 Jul 2005, 09:12
by tom2681
Yep. I think he's called Iron Foot or something like that in the HKL subs.

Yeah! He starts off as a bad guy and later joins the WFH-team. His role is a bit bigger in part 4 and 5. Loved part 4.

Anyone seen the new Fortune Star version of this released a couple of weeks ago in the Sammo boxset ? Any verdict on the quality compared to other versions ?
