Hey,
A while back (thanks to Hungfist) I watched the trailer for Roaring Fire on Youtube, a Japanese film which Hung really seems to recommend and, from the looks of the trailer, stunts etc could have influenced Jackie when he made the classic Police Story.
I was wondering is there a good English friendly release of the film anywhere?

As for the influence, Jackie was a huge fan of Sonny Chiba since the late 1960s or early 1970s when Chiba's TV show Key Hunter (1967-1971) played on TV in Hong Kong. Chiba was responsible for the action choreography and stunts, and played one of the leading roles. Key Hunter also brought Chiba to Bruce's Lee attention, who then contacted to Chiba to collaborate with him. Unfortunately Bruce Lee died before this happened.

At that time Chiba was mainly an action star and stuntman. He founded his film school Japan Action Club while he was working on Key Hunter to train physically capable action stars like Hiroyuki Sanada and Etsuko Shihomi. He also did great stunt work in movies like Kamikaze Man (1966), where he did everything from skiing to car chases to boat chases to martial arts to hanging from a plane that is about to take off. He even spent one or two weeks in a hospital in Taiwan after he slipped in a scene where he's hanging on top of a speeding car.

Another great stunt sequence can be seen in Jail Breakers (1976), which features Chiba hanging from a helicopter very much like Jackie does in Police Story 3 (see screencaps in my review). Roaring Fire has some action scenes in Hong Kong that may or may not have been an influence to Jackie, but it's not so much about any specific film, but more about inspiration in general.

In the early 1980's Jackie actually travelled to Japan to meet Chiba. There's an unconfirmed rumour that Jackie has a cameo in Ninja Wars (1982), but no one has ever been able to confirm that.

It's apparently mentioned in Jackie's autobiography (I don't remember the name of the book, and I haven't read it, though) but that probably wasn't really written by Jackie himself. What I meant was that no one has been able to spot Jackie in the film. It may be that Jackie doesn't want to be associated with the film film anymore as it's full of sex and violence. But that's just a guess.

Only the last one is dubbed. The first two (which are the same dvd with different covers) have the original audio.

The book is called 'I Am Jackie Chan' and while its a good read (imo) you're right, I agree Jackie probably didnt write it himself, he may have contributed stories here and there and someone else wrote it. He also claims he's in Come Drink With Me somewhere.

There was a Japanese language news article somewhere that said that Jackie went to Toei studios to meet Chiba. That's a bit confusing since Ninja Wars is actually a Kadokawa film. It could be a mistake and they meant Kadokawa, or it could be correct since Toei was the distributor of many Kadokawa films and hence might have collaborated in the production as well, it could mean the film was actually Shogun's Ninja (Toei, 1980) rather than Ninja Wars.

Or maybe Jackie simply isn't in any Chiba movie He did go to Japan to meet him, though.
