Bullets 'n' Babes

This came a bit out of nowhere. Yet another Yusuke Yamada (Real Onigokko, Noboru Iguchi's upcoming Live) survival game novel adaptation. This one, however, looks interesting because:

1) the trailer is very interesting
2) director Eisuke Naito has a good track record of spicy films, including the debut splatter Prince of Milk, and the ballsy Let's Make the Teacher Have a Miscarriage Club.
3) rated R-15, which is higher than films of this kind usually. Remember, the Japanese pg-12 rating allows stuff like dead bodies decapitated with chainsaw, and R-15 a hell of a lot more.

I completely understand the R-15 rating now after having seen the film. Going I was expecting something much lighter than the seriously twisted and dark stuff that happens in this film. It's a pretty unique mix of candy-colored wierdness and some really uncomfortable content - gang rape, incest, torture and lots of splatter, the latter without any CGI shenenigans from what I recall. The film is also bereft of a protagonist you could (or would want to) identify with. Add the interesting narrative structure of flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks and you have a very good and highly recommended movie.

PS: Both PUZZLE and Noboru Iguchi's (quite bad) LIVE are based on novels by Yusuke Yamada. In one of the better jokes in LIVE, a woman asks if the events are some kind of government conspiracy because she was also involved in the "Puzzle Incident".

Sounds like an intriguing Battle Royale style mystery. In fact I'm reading 'Killer Queen' now which is a visual novel game with a similar premise.

Just got a Korean release with English subtitles!
