Eiga geijutsu's Top 10 and Bottom 10 Japanese films
Posted: 18 Jan 2014, 08:49
Every year in January Japanese film journal Eiga geijutsu raises some eyebrows with their controversial top 10 and botton 10 lists. Every year some of the year's most acclaimed mainstream films, such as The Wind Rises (Hayao Miazaki) and Like Father, Like Son (Koreeda's Cannes winner) this year, end up on their bottom 10 list!
Sion Sono is a particular anti-favorite for the staff. In 2009 his Love Exposure was praised as the year's best film, but since 2011 all of Sono's films have been in Bottom 10. In 2012 his films Land of Hope and Himizu were the worst and second worst film of the year!
Some have said that Eiga geijutsu has tendency to vote for filmmakes they have connections with, and be intentionally anti-mainstream. Nevertheless, the lists are very interesting read, and especially the Top-10s have losts of gems on them.
