Bullets 'n' Babes

Can be straight-up romance or romantic-comedy. The "Il Mare" thread got me thinking about what are people's favourites in this genre. Do you like this genre? Why do you like/dislike it? Some of my favourites that I can think of are:

I've only seen My Sassy Girl out of that list, not sure why but I loved it! It is cliché but I found myself really caring for the two main leads for example, it has loads of really sweet scenes

like the one where Geon-Woo (sp?) gives the girl the rose in the music recital, the "Happy Birthday"/fireworks scene, and the one on the mountain where the girl cries.. *sniff* That is emotional.

and I did cry (almost)

For the rom-com side, My Sassy Girl.
For a rom-drama Lost In Time - amazing acting by Cecilia Cheung and I almost went all weepy at a couple of scenes.

"In the mood for love" wins hands down for being a pure example of what epitomises romance for me. Followed by Il Mare and My Sassy Girl but I've not seen to many.

Agree about ITMFL, also add the brilliant Chungking Express to that list but is that strictly a romance? I guess partly.

Parts probably are.

Fly Me to Polaris gave me a lump in my throat. **Sob**

It's a toss-up for me between An Autumn's Tale and Comrades, Almost a Love Story. Both make me all weepy and smiley at the end.

Been wanting to see that film. There's a new Japanese remake of it just been released called Night Of The Shooting Stars.

Lost in Time was another good film too. Forgot about that one.

Loved my Sassy Girl. Probably still my favourite movie right after Days of Being Wild...

ITMFL, Ashes of Time, Happy Together ... even Days of Being Wild ...all are kind of love-movies... sad love movies...
ITMFL deals with loving someone but not being able to be with them, Ashes of Time is about regretting a missed opportunity, HappyTogether is about loving the wrong person for you... and Days of Being Wild is about love, and sacrifice (Yuddi really cares and even loves these women, and they love him... but as soon as they ask for something he can't provide, he feels they deserve better, and does the right thing for everyone, and ends it.) While Yuddi seems a selfish young man, he actually does the least selfish thing... (although it's also partly from his fear of abandonment ofcourse, among other things like depression, and not having much self-confidence in himself, although he hides that behind a brilliant 'arrogant' and confident posture)

I think Rouge is a nice love story, especially the part where Leslie is forbidden to continue the relationship with Anita, they're back in their room, and he breaks down and cries while holding her tightly...

Havent seen 2046 yet... althoughI'm sure I'll love it

I should see some more Korean love-movies. Hell... I should see more Korean movies PERIOD!

Well, I like most of Wong Kar Wai movies, and In the mood for love is definitely the best. 2046 is good, but not up to its prequel.

A nice one is also Anna Magdalena, very nice movie (great photography by Peter Pau!).

I forgot "Anna Magdalena", the HK DVD is okay but is crying out for a better releases.

I'm up to "Ashes of Time" in my WKW collection and as the DVD is so bad quality I can't bring myself to watch it. I will though. I've skipped around a bit as I saw CE, ITMFL and 2046 before starting at the beginning.

I agree Beer ITMFL is his best, 2046 is also very good.

Anna Magdalena is a good one, too. I agree. But it's not the kind of happy, teary-eyed type of romance I enjoy watching repeatedly.

And I'd agree that WKW films are top-notch in the heartbreak department. In the Mood for Love is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Huge sobs from me during the part when Tony Leung's character is visiting the temple, whispers his love into the hole in the tree, then seals it up.

I'd also have to put a vote in for Lee Chang Dong's untraditional romance, Oasis. It's such a fantastic film, and another in the heartbreak category that makes it a difficult one for re-watching.

Can't believe I forgot the sublime Rouge.

That's my favourite.
