Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution?

Post by Markgway »

Am reading a book about the infamous 'Diary of Jack the Ripper' and it's a fascinating, if gruelling read. I was wondering what anyone here's thoughts were on the topic? Does the Diary evidence persuade you that arsenic addict James Maybrick was 'Jack'? Or did 'From Hell' convince you it was a three-man job with surgeon Sir William Gull the main player in a Royal conspiracy? Or do you have someone else in mind...?

It was the Elephant Man! :)

Nah... although From Hell also mentions the Elephant Man, I think it was the doctor that was a suspect, then he escaped or left or whatever to the USA, where he was under surveillance by the FBI (Scottland yard askked them to), he then dissappeared and in that period there were more murders on prostitutes, simular to the London murders. He also went to mid- and south-america and in those periods there were also simular murders...

No, it was an evil spirit that has possessed people throughout human history like Star Trek: TOS suggests.

From Hell was a fucking awful film BTW.

Well, the acting was. Heather Graham as a 19th century pro for fuck's sake??? Johnny Depp as a junkie Scot?? WTF??? But the Hughes Bros did a good job with the atmosphere. And I love a good conspiracy theory.

It was a run of the mill very predictable Hollywood thriller and thus I had figured it all out by 1/3 through. You'd be cynical too if yiu saw the twists to films like Fight Club, Seven and The Sixth Sense coming from miles away like I do. I'm so sick of crime thrillers being so damn predictable.

Acting wise Johnny Depp was ok (he's a capable actor who's been in so many bad movies, like Nic Cage or Michael Caine) and Heather Graham is a just walking set of boobs (I have no problem with that :D ). Ian Holm was so fucking terrible, the last person you'd expect to give a bad performance. By the end he was nothing more than a comical 2D villain doing a bad Hannibal Lecter impression.

The plot device where Depp's character sees clues while high on opium was bloody silly. I'm probably the last person to complain about realism in films (being a fan of action movies), but this one pushed me past my limits.

Well, I'd read the book upon which most of the theories were based. So I wasn't expecting to be surprised really... I guess I came at it from a different angle.

True. I like Depp I just am not sure about his casting.

Yep. And why couldn't they get a pair that could at least act a bit? She's not that special looking IMO.

I saw it at the cinema so I'm struggling to remember him...

I wouldn't call that a spoiler. You're not revealing WHAT he saw. I agree on that point. It was totally made up. Was Abberline a junkie? I've never heard it. Maybe? But it was an unecessary cinematic creation foisted upon an already thin conspiracy plot. But it's my favourite of the theories (if not the most persausive).

But they are a very nice pair, if I'm picturing them correctly!! I'm just glad she's started getting them out!

Sorry for the non-helpful contribution, I'm just very bored at work...

I have a book, which admittedly is a few years old now, that is quite persausive about the age and authenticity of the diary. It's called Jack the Ripper: The Final Chapter by Paul Feldman. Your brother probably has it. This guy spent ages researching the topic and so it's no puff piece done to capitalise on a well-worn subject. True, there's a lot of conjecture. But if only 30% of the book is absolutely true, that still says a lot. Not sure how interested you are? But I would try reading that work and see what you think. It's heavy on names and details, but work the effort I think.
