Of course the people sending him death threats are bastards. I do think flags/symbols are sadly hijacked by racist scum for their own ends. But thats no reason to protest about the flag itself. Would the racist abuse have not come his way had he not complained about the "racist" flag?

I actually agree. Patriotism (and religion) should be inner feelings. So no he's not an arse but I'm not surprised he got death threats, plenty of people are ignorant fucks.
Is there really any need to display the union flag every day of the year to say you're patriotic? Not at all. I cannot stand the sight of massive English flags hung from houses. Look at America, they're forced to pledge the allegiance every single day whilst at school. I guess on the flipside it means all Americans think of themselves as American first, religion/native country second (which obviously isn't always the case here) but still.
To call the union flag a controversial symbol is utter madness though. How have we gone so far the opposite direction that we're afraid to be patriotic "at all"? The whole notion of not displaying a flag in America, would be unheard of.
In short, I'm all for patriotism, a British day is long over due but blind patriotism is far more dangerous.

You're both arses.
Nothing wrong with being against jingoism or syrup-laden US-style patriotism, but to accuse the national flag of racism is an arse-like thing to do. A flag isn't racist, only the way a small minority uses it. It's people like him who allow these things to be hijacked by the far right.

Is the man British born? The article doesn't mention that.
In some countries in Africa (for example) you'd probably be strung up for moaning about their flag.

You called me an arse, or were you just talking generally? I guess so.
