Hey did a search and found nothing...

...I understand that there was some trouble with previous versions of this movie. Has it been resolved now? Which version is the best?

AFAIK the new-ish korean 2-Disc edition is perfect.

EDIT: the previous edition was non-anamorphic and had probs with subs.

The Korean SE has a anamorphic transfer and looks better than the previous release but the subtitles are still terrible. From captures the Japanese DVD looks a little better. jereon (AsianDVDGuide) says it's much better, he's a man of extremes so better ask there to see what the actual difference is. I'm interested to know as well. Didn't much like this the first time but I'd really like to see it again, think I'll like it second time around.

No English subtitled version is perfect but the Korean SE is by far the best. The PQ could be better (but it's fine at the same time) and the English subs are as bad as they were on the original DVD. I got used to them after 5-10 minutes though. The thing is the Japanese DVD doesn't have English subs and the HK or Korean (original) DVDs have a non-anamorphic picture.

The Korean SE also has a second disc of extras which aren't English subtitled but better than nothing. I bought mine from CD WOW who don't "seem" to be selling it anymore.

Personally I think the film is excellent. If you like romantic films that is!

And that was from the first few minutes alone! I could never watch this film without a corrected script.

I had the Korean double disc re-issue and traded it away right after I watched it. I traded it against "Cop on a Mission" & "Century of the Dragon". Was a good trade in my opinion, because I can't see how I was fooled into getting this film. What is it that people like about this film? So many better romantic Korean films out there.

The thing is Lourdes even with it's flaws it's still much better than any of the other DVDs. I've owned the original Korean DVD and that was non-anamorphic.

LD I thought it was excellent, really touching and I loved how it messed with time. What titles are better?

p.s - Bisc: They're more Engrish than English. They're sloppily made but you soon get used to it.

They're currently shooting an American remake of this film (shudder). The reason I mention this is perhaps we'll get a decent R1 DVD of the original film out of the deal.

The only good reason.

There is no "decent" R1 DVD of "L' Appartement" which I thought there would be.

Quite a few. "A Man who went to Mars" is a great Korean romance. "Failan" would be another one. Call it superficial or mainstream, but I think that "My Sassy Girl", "The Classic" and "Windstruck" are also way better and more romantic, too.
A very underrated film is in my opinion "Byul" ("The Star").
Even though I didn't find"Madeleine" as good as the above films, it was good enough to keep and not trade it away like I did with "Il Mare".

Haven't seen The Classic yet.

But I agree with LD on Man who went to Mars, Failan, MSG and Windstruck. 8)

Well like every other film in existence, it's subjective what you like. No point trying to quanitfy it. I like Il Mare because of the sincerity and lack of pretention in the communication between the two main characters and I partially identify with the male character. It's a good simple idea, and it works.

I love The Classic too but if I was to quantify it, it's completely bland formulaic pap so there are surely better films out there - but I love it anyway.

I completely agree Memetic about your reasons for liking Il Mare.

Failan was more powerful in the second half but that doesn't make it better, just different. The thing with Failan is the first half which is a bit of a failure and really disappointed it for me.
