"Fist of Legend" - Original Language?

Post by Keung »

Hey, dudes. Long time. Anyway, just bought the Cine Asia Blu of this as I have never seen it. I was wondering, as both Cantonese and Mandarin are available, which should I watch it with?

Regards,
Levi

Cantonese. It's (almost) the original with some English and Japanese. The Mandarin is a plain dub, like the English one.

Cheers. Just finished watching it, excellent stuff. I'm glad I waited all these years for a decent version to be released before watching it.

Is the Blu-ray any good? Does it also freeze on the last frame of each shot like the DD DVD?

I didn't notice anything unusual. Nice print. Quite a few scratches and specks, which is understandable, but I like it that way. I hate it when they go to extreme lengths to make the print as clean as if it was filmed yesterday with a hi-tech HD cam or something.

Many people didn't notice it on mentioned Dragon Dynasty DVDs. Not even with 'Tai Chi Master' which was way worse. That's why I'm a bit skeptical.

I recently watched Tai Chi Master. I did notice some sort of blurry slow motion type of thing during some scenes.

It's decent when compared to the versions that have come before (as in none, dubbed-only, mandarin dub only, or cut), but it's still missing some scenes which I personally think should have been in there. Also, there are some changes in the sound department here and there, like some music missing in the Chin Siu Ho-Jet Li fight.

Brilliant movie, probably my all-time favourite martial arts flick ever, but it's currently still not available on DVD/BR completely uncut. Sadly.

The Cine Asia BD of Fist of Legend has the same frame-blending-stuttering-interlacing-however you want to describe it issues as the DVD releases.

The DD BD of Tai Chi Master is exactly the same -- plus it has a fucking awful remix/downmix combo (at least FOL is genuine mono).

The fact that these two discs represent the current best editions speaks volumes...

The German DVD of Fist of Legend is very good - aside from the worst layer change ever lol.

It's still cut though, right? Same cut as the American/UK release....

Here in Holland we also have the german release (with dutch subs), but I really can't be bothered with buying a version I know will irritate me ...

The German DVD of FOL isnt cut (don't think so anyway) :? , isnt it a port of the French DVD (that used to be the one to own if you werent bothered about lack of subtitles). But of course the German now adds English subs.
I agree with Ivan, that DVD is very good :)

I believe the german DVD/BR that's out now is the same cut as the USA/UK version, which is the Hong Kong cut, which is missing some scenes which were in the slightly longer Taiwanese(?) cut, like Chin Siu Ho doing opium, and Jet's nippon girlfriend bowing out of respect to the douches at Chin Wu Moon, when they leave... among other short (parts of) scenes.

IMO the Taiwanese cut is just an extended version (I haven't seen it yet) but I'm happy with the HK cut which (I guess) is the uncut theatrical version :)

The missing scenes did add alot to the movie (as far as I'm concerned), so I do see them as an integral part of the movie.

Ofcourse, this is just an opinion and will differ from person to person...

...but considering it's MY opinion, it automatically means that all different opinions are stupid, uninformed, and downright racist, and thus should be ignored or ridiculed!

Right. Yi-Long thinks that because he prefers the extended version that it's 'uncut' and anything less is cut. Not so.

Lucky you and your dodgy eyesight... lol

Check out the fight in the Japanese school near the beginning. If you don't notice anything there then you've missed the problem. For me it's apparent.

This thread reminded me I had to update my review to reflect that juddering report. I sat down tonight to have another look see if I could spot the juddering and I still can't see anything! If it's just something I'm completely blind to or whether it's more noticeable on a LCD/Plasma screen I don't know. :dontknow:

Not sure if you've seen the scenes I'm referring to, but they are not 'extra' scenes, but more like parts of scenes that are still in the movie, but have been 'chopped' out, probably due to some time-constraints or whatever silly excuse they used.

So some of the scenes that are still in these, should have been a little longer but were cut short. Which is why I feel the current release is a CUT version.

When you talk about 'extended' cuts, it's usually EXTRA scenes which don't REALLY fit into it all and look kinda out of place, but these segments are pretty damn important and thus seeing them missing from this cut, is quite jarring. The bow from the japanese girl, the conversation during the chessgame, the opium-smoking by Chin Siu Ho... and just small (extended) conversations here and there which brought some nuance to some of the characters and relationships.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fist_of_Legend

It just sucks they can't manage to just release 1 proper uncut version. Wikipedia says the german DVD is 'uncut', but who knows what that means anymore...!? And it has no info about the german BR.

Just because the Taiwan version is longer doesn't mean it's "uncut". I don't think that version was ever intended to be shown outside Taiwan. It was rather common that HK films had extended versions playing in Taiwan. You could say any company releasing the Taiwan version outside Taiwan is releasing the wrong cut, rather than the original HK version.

That wiki page says it's also missing some stuff from the HK version. Besides, it's in "wrong" language, as Mandarin dub is the intended language for that version. Perhaps some company could do a custom version with the original soundtrack added to this extended version, but does original audio even exist for all of those added bits?

Considering I have the Siren VHS with that longer cut, and it is all cantonese language (except for the parts in japanese and english ofcourse), yes.

Also, when watching the movie without those scenes, it actually LOOKS cut, as in the scenes don't 'finish' naturally', but rather chopped off.
